I really love how the people behind violence prevention do recognize that the two professions (policing and violence prevention) compliment one another and wouldn’t work if the other didn’t exist.
@@qriosity9265 Every society has had a form of policing. It as essential a function as farming and construction. The Romans had the Praetorian Guard (who performed many functions outside of policing and were notoriously corrupt), the Athenians had the Hoplites (loose bands of citizens hired to maintain order and patrol public areas), the Spartans had the Homoioi (basically their military), the European societies of the Middle Ages had bailiffs, reeves, and yeomen (all of which are titles still used today), and Feudal Japan had the Samurai (the lesser samurai would often patrol their liege-lords estates and police the local farms and villages). Police exist for a reason. Though often authority becomes easily corrupted, it is an essential role in society because humans are social animals and therefore need social structure (like wolves, chimpanzees, and gorillas). While good people can be found everywhere, like those in violence prevention programs, so can bad people, like those who kill over petty gang feuds and those who abuse authority. Not all police are bad, but not all are good. Not all criminals have evil intent, but neither are all doing it merely as a means to survive. Chicago's history has been filled with a lot of crippling social conditions due to segregation, racial tensions, and A LOT of gun proliferation. In order for meaningful change in Chicago, there needs to be a crucial wartime effort to develop the local economy, education, property, social programs, and mental health care to help them cope with the trauma. The police also have a vital role as well. Ironically, much of the segregation and red zoning policies implemented back in the day were done by the old school democrats. The important thing now is to come up with new methods and thinking to address the endemic violence.
There is no feasible way to integrate the gangs, in there current form they are literally just young people teaming up and inheriting old beefs and once they lose people it's not even about whatever it was once about. Maybe back then, when the gangs had structure integrated them into a community was feasible. The way I see it, a good majority of older youth are probably too far gone. These members of the community are doing what they can to de-escalate situations and trying to intervene in violent situations WITHOUT the power dynamic. FUND THESE PEOPLE. These community members are putting their lives on the line every day to interrupt violent situations, some of which the police would probably never even respond to. Make it worthwhile for them. Don't turn these heroes into martyrs. The only way to expand non-violent social services is to incentivize people to become involved.

@@BlownMacTruck No, you don't. At its most basic, "defund the police" means reallocating money from policing to other agencies funded by local municipalities. Advocates are split on the question of how far it should go: whether to reduce funding and reform some aspects of policing, or completely abolish police forces as we know them. ALL OF THIS prevents the police from doing their job. They can't protect people if they aren't armed. Criminals won't stop using guns, knives, bombs, fists, whatever they can use to harm people. @Anonymous that’s such bs.... why can Latinos and Asians come here in droves and pull themselves up by the bootstraps and make a living? I’ll tell you why, because instead of being out pretending to be gangsters the vast majority have father figures, discipline, and are taught right from wrong. I agree that there’s a cultural problem, but it seems to me that it’s more of an American Black problem than “blaming the system.”
The thing is that police officers are a reflection of our society, there are all types of people working in police forces, and what personally worries me is that I don't know what type of person will be wearing that uniform, this is what makes me mistrustful and it takes some time to get past that and understand what type of person I am dealing with. The way I see it, those violence interrupters have the huge advantage of being known, of having relationships with the people they are trying to help and this accelerates the trust that is required to defuse situations. If they are willing to risk themselves to help people then the city has every obligation to support their efforts.
It's more poverty breeds desperation to desperation breeds crime but you do have to make the conscious decision to go to crime instead of something else so maybe it's a cultural thing and it's a situational thing honestly as a black man in America I say it's both but you know it could be either or depending on the person
They have to much hope in the criminals themselves. Always after every shooting it’s “please turn yourself in” like I doubt the guy who is shooting the in a public place is even watching the news to hear the message
Ever heard the phrase "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"? Housing, food, water, education, after school programs, job training, arts/enrichment programs, libraries, maker spaces, community centers, transportation = prevention. Police = cure. Lots of cities spend half their budget on police, when all those other programs go unfunded and overlooked and would make far more impact on whether people turn to crime in the first place. I really love how the people behind violence prevention do recognize that the two professions (policing and violence prevention) compliment one another and wouldn’t work if the other didn’t exist.
No police are needed in a society
As long as humans wrong and abuse another, a system of reprimanding offenders needs to exist. Policing is the most obvious solution, but because police officers are human, they cannot be perfect either. Get what I am saying yet (I’ve reiterated it three times now)?
I don't know about the last part there. It's about scale of resources. Cops have $1.6bil to prevent where as the program has $17mil budget.

Yet more importantly, we have to accept that the gangs there are too ingrained in Chicago's identity to be fully dispersed, thus they need to be integrated in the community in some form or fashion. So much work needs to be done.
It’s the fact that a democrat has ran Chicago for 50 years
I hate to say it, but ever heard of the purge? Other countries do that, even for immoral reasons like discrimination and religion differences
@@joseureste8257 I have my own laundry list of pros and cons with the democrats, but one thing I can say is that the dems from 50 years ago were much different from modern democrats of today before the party platform switch during the Nixon convention in the late 60s.
They will beef until there dead or the cops catch them, probably mass arrest for older known gang members but this alone would do nothing, conditions have to be better. But one cannot happen without the other.
@@TheBucketSkill exactly, and to be honest I was quite hesitant to even throw that point across. A lot of the old heads from the GDs, Black P Stones, and Vice Lords, have been done away with. This is actually the best video I've seen from Vice in a while. These members of the community are doing what they can to de-escalate situations and trying to intervene in violent situations WITHOUT the power dynamic. FUND THESE PEOPLE. Not very much, and those who do it "don't do it for the money" which is sad but true. These community members are putting their lives on the line every day to interrupt violent situations, some of which the police would probably never even respond to. Make it worthwhile for them. ALL OF THIS prevents the police from doing their job. They can't protect people if they aren't armed. Criminals won't stop using guns, knives, bombs, fists, whatever they can use to harm people. That's what they do. Disarming the police, removing funding, and abolishing policing all together is the single most STUPID idea to ever have been though of. Well she is so awesome we need more people like this a lot more and all the other people that are there helping to stand that really made my day watching this thanks viceland really
These people are delusional. Both are needed! Not one or the other
Yeah.....it won't work
23 million could have been used towards small business investment or trade schools you can’t follow grown men around 24/7 crime breeds poverty
All heroes don't wear capes they just have to show braveness
Def not these jokers
Come on scholars And academia have known for generations that crime is directly related to poverty.
Or is it that the rich write the law and are therefore never on the wrong side of it.
Let’s be straight up honest here, the no police idea is stupid on an epic level.
Facts 💯
Sounds like so successful! 48 shootings and 4 killed last weekend. I guess this gunman has a real bad marksmanship, only 9% killing rate. He needs more training and more range time. Even a social worker can shoot better than him.
She saw a bunch of illegal guns and did nothing. Really effective.
This is good and all but I’d rather see resources go to fixing the root of the problem, which is the people, the mentality that leads to violence.
Yeah, there is a mentality that goes along with mass crime. The feeling of hopelessness, stuck, left behind, etc...
Dats racist.
Attack the rap music. They are literally swimming upstream Against the it.
tf does rap music have to do with violence? 😂
Tom Macdonald but u know no gangsta in Chicago listening to him
@@Rolando_Cueva in fact especially in Chicago with today's media in such small confined community, they diss each other in rap or on social media then go down the street and blast at each other
@@ferrychomer1551 it’s not just Chicago. Everyone else is influenced by it and Chicago is setting a standard. Rules are being laid outZ. Religion is basically be created by Record execs
@Jordan Wolfe rolando was joking
How to deal with a shooter?
Ask them nicely.
Police can’t defend you off the drop, you are already required to defend yourself. So that begs the question : if the police can’t defend from shooters at all , why even have them
@@chupacabra304 police aren’t a private contractor, they are supposed to uphold the law. Shooting people is against the law. You’re a pretty optimistic person if you think a world without police would function more smoothly.
@@chupacabra304 In a perfect world, we wouldn’t need a police force, but we have crime.
Which means it can’t work.
Even in this imperfect world we don’t need militarized police, that’s the point
Police don’t even lower the crime, the only thing they can do is attempt to ensure that the governments end of the social contract is upheld , and they do that poorly. Since the drug war began the % of cases successfully solved has dropped because its easier for police to bully stoners than to actually prevent any white collar crime.
Don’t even get me started on illegal forfeitures and theft by police exceeding all burglaries in our shitty country
@Pecker Dúnlaing Space Dolphin Brigada she may have watched that boy grow up she cares about him unlike you who has never met him and the cops who dont know him either. He could be dead if she didn't step in to save him and others.
Why didn't the film crew follow her to record her doing exactly what they were there to film? Shoddy journalism.
One year later, this hasn't aged well, sadly.
How's that police defunding going? Any problems?
We need more police
Lady, you ROCK!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
To use your knowledge , respect and your own personal power to do such good. I wish you so many blessings… 🙏❤️🙏
Some of the major problems are: poverty, no job opportunities, bad parenting or no parenting, violent gangster rap music and lack of birth control. You can't just wish the problems to go away, unless you get to the real root of the problems. You need to give communities real hope, not just empty platitudes and more policing.
Too late, death or prison now. No chance for Chicago youth.
It’s the culture.
Oh this has not aged well...i mean i appreciate her efforts...but this has not aged well
Far to many Blacks refuse to admit you need a father and mother in raising their kids in the ways they should go. Because the woman don;t need a man those kids need both parents, without it an embalance sets in.
This is an excuse.
The right leaning do-gooders claim it's a lack of fathers, the left claim it's a lack of education.
The reality is some people just have a greater propensity for violence and cannot live in an orderly cohesive society.
The slums of Chicago, Haiti, Brazil, Somalia have one thing in common and it ain't a lack of fathers.
@@code20tv keyword "slum"
It’s sad that a women have to physically place themselves in harm’s way for men who don’t think twice about them before opening fire in concentrated areas.
Its not sad its inspiring and hopefully more people can join her in this endeavor also don't make this a gender thing all black people need to come together on this male and female
I have an idea. Each illegal gun you find give them 5+ years in prison, even if the weapon is new. Add 15+ if it’s been used. These loose laws make criminals think it’s a badge of honor to go to jail.
Or we could try to reverse the effects of the crack epidemic, redlining, and inequality but your idea makes people from outside the community feel better so let's do that
@@verlinjoseph5438 if you ask civilians in the community what are they more afraid of police or the gangs I guarantee you it’s the gangs.
Uh, what loose laws in Chicago my guy?
@@malignm1857Even if so people fear both a lot
@@hunterflowerson4460 in Chicago you get 2 - 5 years if caught with an illegal gun. That’s way to loose. All these years with crime through the roof nobody asked how are they getting in the city? Instead of defunding the police how about put more funding in Highway search’s for illegal cross state firearm sales.
The only way to stop the violence is to stop the poverty, every poor area of the world since man has existed has had high violent crime.
“Violence interrupter” OMFG lol what a joke
Bless this lady in the beginning of the video for trying.
Unfortunately, she doesn’t realize that her efforts will be futile.
You can’t fix a complex systemic issue of violence and crime in the hood.
She makes small wins, but she can’t change a generational mindset that’s been ingrained in the heads of the ignorant.
Could u imagine how bad the violence would get if they defunded the police and there wasn't barley any cops in the southside, it'd be the purge
Yep black folks keep it up they're going to defund and dismantle and you're going to have to figure out something for your own safety. That's going to be a miserable time in a place like Chicago. I commend people who are genuine in trying to improve the situation I've heard seen documentaries on The Interrupters I think most of them are black women which is sad where are the men the tired of seeing it it's old and frankly a waste of time I wouldn't waste my energy on these people I would just get the hell up out of Chicago.
We don’t know until we’ve tried it
Defund the police only helps criminals. We say that police need more training but we also want to take away their budget. How does that work?
How have the millions they get every year never gone to training? How does that work? Only thing that money has funded is body cams that they can turn off
Republicans that's why. They want to keep defunding cities which they need to money to pay police. Quite sad. 😢
Don’t listen to insane leftist rhetoric.
Hey, just checking in Chicago. How's that stopping shootings thing working out?
what a great lady....
We let guns and poverty run rampant, and then we wonder why there’s violence.
It's more poverty breeds desperation to desperation breeds crime but you do have to make the conscious decision to go to crime instead of something else so maybe it's a cultural thing and it's a situational thing honestly as a black man in America I say it's both but you know it could be either or depending on the person
Exactly
They have to much hope in the criminals themselves. Always after every shooting it’s “please turn yourself in” like I doubt the guy who is shooting the in a public place is even watching the news to hear the message
actually they do watch the news ... to hide and get the dl on what is going on but no maybe not all will turn themselves in
What a hero! Now back her with strong politicians that care about the victims of crime and declare war on the perpetrators. And fund more police...
Police have a purpose, but they can't be the only thing we try.
