      @@qriosity9265 Every society has had a form of policing. It as essential a function as farming and construction. The Romans had the Praetorian Guard (who performed many functions outside of policing and were notoriously corrupt), the Athenians had the Hoplites (loose bands of citizens hired to maintain order and patrol public areas), the Spartans had the Homoioi (basically their military), the European societies of the Middle Ages had bailiffs, reeves, and yeomen (all of which are titles still used today), and Feudal Japan had the Samurai (the lesser samurai would often patrol their liege-lords estates and police the local farms and villages). Police exist for a reason. Though often authority becomes easily corrupted, it is an essential role in society because humans are social animals and therefore need social structure (like wolves, chimpanzees, and gorillas). While good people can be found everywhere, like those in violence prevention programs, so can bad people, like those who kill over petty gang feuds and those who abuse authority. Not all police are bad, but not all are good. Not all criminals have evil intent, but neither are all doing it merely as a means to survive. As long as humans wrong and abuse another, a system of reprimanding offenders needs to exist. Policing is the most obvious solution, but because police officers are human, they cannot be perfect either. Get what I am saying yet (I’ve reiterated it three times now)?

The police are the most important foundation of first line defence. If there's no police entire society would be in a mess. Suppose you have murder and robbery at your home, you would need immediate professional assistance from someone specialised. Chicago's history has been filled with a lot of crippling social conditions due to segregation, racial tensions, and A LOT of gun proliferation. In order for meaningful change in Chicago, there needs to be a crucial wartime effort to develop the local economy, education, property, social programs, and mental health care to help them cope with the trauma. The police also have a vital role as well. Yet more importantly, we have to accept that the gangs there are too ingrained in Chicago's identity to be fully dispersed, thus they need to be integrated in the community in some form or fashion. So much work needs to be done.

Ironically, much of the segregation and red zoning policies implemented back in the day were done by the old school democrats. The important thing now is to come up with new methods and thinking to address the endemic violence.

    • @TheBucketSkill

      There is no feasible way to integrate the gangs, in there current form they are literally just young people teaming up and inheriting old beefs and once they lose people it's not even about whatever it was once about. Maybe back then, when the gangs had structure integrated them into a community was feasible. The way I see it, a good majority of older youth are probably too far gone. They will beef until there dead or the cops catch them, probably mass arrest for older known gang members but this alone would do nothing, conditions have to be better. But one cannot happen without the other.

    • @williammitchell3169
      @williammitchell3169 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@TheBucketSkill exactly, and to be honest I was quite hesitant to even throw that point across. A lot of the old heads from the GDs, Black P Stones, and Vice Lords, have been done away with. But I like your input though.

    This is actually the best video I've seen from Vice in a while. These members of the community are doing what they can to de-escalate situations and trying to intervene in violent situations WITHOUT the power dynamic. FUND THESE PEOPLE. Make it "financially worthwhile" to be a violence interrupter. The idea of replacing police with social workers is a great one, but do you have any idea how much social workers get paid on average? Not very much, and those who do it "don't do it for the money" which is sad but true. These community members are putting their lives on the line every day to interrupt violent situations, some of which the police would probably never even respond to. Make it worthwhile for them. Don't turn these heroes into martyrs. The only way to expand non-violent social services is to incentivize people to become involved.

Advocates are split on the question of how far it should go: whether to reduce funding and reform some aspects of policing, or completely abolish police forces as we know them. ALL OF THIS prevents the police from doing their job. They can't protect people if they aren't armed. Criminals won't stop using guns, knives, bombs, fists, whatever they can use to harm people. That's what they do. Disarming the police, removing funding, and abolishing policing all together is the single most STUPID idea to ever have been though of. Until you can remove violence from human nature (you can't) you're gonna need police. It works. Is there collateral? Yes, and we need to work on that. @@shoecar89 wow it’s almost like having one woman, who was at one point a gang boss, that has experience can’t control and deescalate all violent interactions in chicago. She is unique, and you cannot train someone to operate and like she does. Police are necessary, and anyone who would say otherwise has never lived without them.
      I think an incredible example of this is New York in early 2020: any theft of goods under 1000$ would not be investigated, pursued or responded to by police. W
      Do you think the citizens of New York were happy with it? You guessed it, they hated it. If there are no police, what is the alternative deterrent? Deescalation is possible in certain cases, but to simply remove police entirely in favour of deescalation units is laughable at best and dangerous at worst.

    Ever heard the phrase "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"? Housing, food, water, education, after school programs, job training, arts/enrichment programs, libraries, maker spaces, community centers, transportation = prevention. Police = cure. Lots of cities spend half their budget on police, when all those other programs go unfunded and overlooked and would make far more impact on whether people turn to crime in the first place. Police have a purpose, but they can't be the only thing we try.
