Great quality lathe. I got the KS XL from Simon Hope last year and have been really pleased with all it's 320kg!!

Great lathe. I think you would make beautiful bowls and other items on any lathe of any size. You seem very talented. But it is always nice to have new kit! Thanks for all your videos.

I love the reverse indicator light. The absence of one on my Laguna 12/16 is, to me, my lathe's greatest shortcoming.

Very solid looking lathe. I like the 3 bearings in headstock. I also like the heavier looking spindle. I can't tell from video but it looks like a 1 1/4" x 8 spindle. I'm looking forward to you using it in your demos. Thanks again for sharing your turning experiences with us!

Very nice. I completely agree that a large lathe is not necessary. Also, as you have shown, selling an old lathe is pretty easy, so upgrading as your hobby/profession grows is the best option (in my opinion - I'm on my second lathe).

I have the KS midi pro which is very similar and have had it for 2 years. Rock solid and delivers the full power of the motor - it oozes quality and good engineering. Can't go wrong with it - the smaller record power lathes feel like toys in comparison. Wish I was gifted mine :-).

I have the similar KS FU 180 Twister, with moveable headstock & 1½ horsepower.
Considering the bed extension in future, & have just invested in a 2HP dust extractor, so will be interested to see your future videos.
    Thanks. 👍

Nice lathe, health to enjoy. I have a Jet with a 14" swing and rotating headstock and only once in about 14 years have I turned it outboard to make a top for a barrel. Also, the tool rest looks like the Jet style which I find very comfortable to use. I'm looking forward to seeing this lathe in action.
    Best Wishes, Brendan.

Congratulations! You'll be the best source of information for anyone looking to know about this machine. Ironically, it looks like a newer Rikon lathe that I was considering as my upgrade, but your new lathe seems to have further improvements to certain parts. Myself, I started with the little brother to the updated Rikon model that was released less than 18 months ago, my upgrade was to Laguna 12|16 with 10" bed extension and outboard turning kit. The new Rikon had the things like the 1hp motor (up from 3/4hp and it needed it!), a tail stock upgrade (Midi II+ seems even better) and a RPM range from 50-1950, like yours. I have to change belts to get down to 50, but it's so easy compared to the old Rikon design that I don't mind. In fact, the new Rikon design would prevent me from doing it in my seated position, but would I even need to with the perfect range being available on the middle pulleys, right?
I'm very pleased with my lathe and the features it has that really work for me. My point is that they all have strong points and weaknesses. It looks like KS Shulte improved on any design similarities and made a fine machine. I hope it serves you well.
One more point I just thought of about the time it takes to stop spinning. I had to unsubscribe from a skilled turner today because even watching at x2 speed, his style of stopping the lathe to check the piece after every two cuts, with far too much commentary between, was just too inefficient for me. Can you guess which lathe he has? Your old Record Power Regent. All those lathe stops, uncut, extended by that long wind down time.
    Enjoy your improved efficiency. :)

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you Jay , slow stoping is so time consuming.... Just finishing filming for 4ways video and fast stoping really speed up things....
Every lathe has is good and bad sides so it is the point of which ones are good sides for you or for me....
That is why I like that there is all those lathes on the market...
      Thanks again for watching 🤗

Now I understand. Makes sence, and it is quite a noble project to showcase what can be done with a midi lathe. Very nice from you to consider the pracrical aspect of an investment for a possible profesional use of it. Independtly from the lathe itself, ( my Herald is just perfect foe me), I am enthousiastic to see how you are going to figure the use of it for your business! Best wishes and good vibes for the coming chapters of your toutube adventure!

advice from a friend, before starting to turn, be careful to tighten the pulley screws close to the engine... it doesn't come from the factory with these screws very tight and it loosens the pulleys... no big deal, it's a excellent lathe,... good work and experience with it, you will be happy,...

Hey Tom. As usual, grateful for all the helpful info and teaching you are providing. I’d definitely consider seriously this lathe if it is available in the US. By the way, have you any familiarity with the Harvey T40 lathe? I have a few of their other power tools and they are high quality. They don’t advertise that much so a lot of their tools aren’t seen everywhere like more well known brands. Anyway always looking forward to any of your stuff. Keep up the great work.

Seems like we have similar lathes now 🎉 I don't have experience with other lathes as my Midi Pro is my first lathe but it feels nice. What I don't like is the spindle lock mechanism with that stick, that is way better with your previous lathe. Another (minor) thing I didn't like was the paint on the tool rest, I don't know why they paint it black. It felt like the tools got "stuck" easier with the paint on. My tool rest also doesn't slide as easily on the bank bed as I'd like, even after cleaning. But I'm not sure if that's my fault or the machine's 😅 I'd also like to have the bank bed extension, that's where I really notice having a smaller lathe. When trying to use a forstner bit + the required drill chuck the limits are reached quite fast, additionally when hollowing bowls I always have to take the tailstock off the lathe as moving it back is not enough.
As you menioned you'll make a screw chuck out of the face plate, can you show us how you do that? ☺️
I hope you'll be happy with your little machine but I also think you'll be happy 🤗 Greetings 🤗

Interesting choice Tomislav. Never though you’d “downgrade” :D But it can indeed be an upgrade in certain aspect as you showed in the video. Im still using my DML 320. Must be Quiet similar to the Midi II Plus, but the Midi is just a bit better in every aspect. The only thing that bothered me was the door size at the bottom to change belts which also houses that cable for the speed readout. Is that (in the few cases you have to change the belt) a problem or hard to work with? Is the lathe capable of reversing when powered on? You didn’t show that. Now I have to say that the lamp that shows you reverse is a great feature. Even though im a hobby Turner currently (who knows whats gonna come), I tend to work really fast. That’s why I like to loosen the chuck and then spin it off with the machine turning in reverse. Richard Raffan likes to do that - so thats were I got it from. It can be a bit dangerous when the lathe accidentally turns in the wrong direction, but thats why I like the lamp. A button that triggers reverse rotation as long as you hold it would be a great idea too, just for that application :D
Im really happy for you, that you get to play with nice tools and are able to reach so many people on TH-cam. We can all profit from that in so many different ways…
Looking forward to the next videos!
    Many Greetings from Germany.

Haven't changed the belt, it is a bit on the smaller side but in my case I don't change belt ratio if I can help it....

Looks very solid. When I first started turning about 16 years ago, mini bench top lathes here in the US were all 10" swing like the Jet 1014 I started with. Then Delta introduced a 12" a;nd that became the new standard. Now there are several 14" models to choose from including the Powermatic 2014 I bought. I think that 14" is a great size to start or finish with. Like you, I rarely turn anything that would require my big lathe. Every mini or mid size lathe I have seen have machining marks on the bedways. As long as they were machined level so the points line up, I do not think it much matters. Looks like Powermatic may be getting their spur drive and cone centers for their midi from the same source as KS Shulte as they look identical. Enjoy.
