    The thing with the phones is also relevant with purchasing a car. You can't just purchase a car from a major dealer. One of my coworkers once went to a major Chevy dealer (won't name the dealer, but it was only a year or 2 ago) to purchase a car. They brought cash to purchase it. The dealer refused to sell them the car for cash and said they only did sales via bank loans. So much time and money can be saved by just letting the person pay in cash up front. I understand one of those low credit car dealers doing that, since they sell used cars to low credit people, but a reputable car dealer not letting you just pay the car up front? I hate this society that's run off debt.

      @tmoney1487 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      As someone who's worked in a dealership, though not directly in sales, having someone come up to me and try to pay $10k+ in cash is a terrifying prospect. Not only do you have to count and make sure its right, you have to check every bill on the spot to make sure you arent getting faked out. Then you have to have a secure spot to keep that money or risk getting it robbed, or go through the headache the bank would give you to make that big of a cash deposit out of nowhere. Those issues only compound if you have multiple people per day paying cash money for a car. I think its absolutely reasonable for car dealerships to not allow you to pay cash, not to mention banking information is easier to track and keep up with than cash money.
      When it comes to things like phones its a bit ridiculous, but if youre buying something that costs a ton of money then its absolutely reasonable for the business to not allow you to pay cash.

    I was a telecom sales rep for 6-7 years (in Canada but its basically the same). I'll tell you what I told every client that wanted to buy a full priced phone. 1. Your telecom company makes 0$ on the sale of a full priced device. They make money on your monthly plan. 2. All promotions are then logically applied in a way that will entice the client to pay said monthly plan for a long duration (2 years in Canada) 3. As such telecom stores will only sell you a device on financing (there's very few exceptions such as flip phones and very low value devices) 4. Even if the store was willing to just sell you the device outright it would be a disservice to the client because since the promotions only applies to financing you are going to pay full priced MSRP (even on an old model) and dealing with warranty in the future might be a bitch. And so i would always recommend buying the device directly from the manufacturer (samsung, google and apple) or from bestbuy/amazon. Getting your device this way will make you eligible for other promotions (and even trade in when dealing with Samsung or Apple directly) stuff like promotional pricing, free accessories and stuff like that. They will also typically offer a better in store customer experience since their goal is to sell you the phone and not some predatory financing option.

    My dad just got a new phone. They gave him the option of paying $11 dollars to keep the old phone or $10 dollars for them to take the old phone. He paid the $10 because they told him there was absolutely no reason to keep the old phone since they were going to transfer all of his information to the new one, then about five minutes later they figured out they weren’t able to transfer any of his stuff so I told him just to get the phone back and I’d figure it out. Since it was an Android I figured it wouldn’t be too hard to just back up everything to a computer and go from there. They wouldn’t give him back the phone because he had just paid them to keep it and wouldn’t allow him to pay the $1 difference even though they lied to him about being able to transfer everything. So now he lost my sister’s wedding photos/videos, photos of our new puppy, multiple family vacations, 30 years worth of work contacts, etc.

    For all those saying that getting an android will fix this "situation", it won't. The problem lies in the cesspool of a company, Verizon, whose only goal in life is make frustrating and confusing processes to get people to say "you know what, I'll pay an extra $1000 to not deal with this". Like, imagine if the concept of mokusoft from the Yu-Gi-Oh abridged sires was an actual company, that's Verizon and many, many others in America.

    • @GroundThing
      @GroundThing ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Getting an unlocked phone, android or otherwise will fix the situation, though. I've always had unlocked phones, and besides paying my bill, I don't ever have to deal with my service provider. When I want to upgrade, I just pop out the SIM card and pop it into the new phone. The most I have to do beyond that is maybe transfer files, but more likely most of the files I want to migrate are on SD already.

  • @Psynapseful
    @Psynapseful ปีที่แล้ว +37

    This is actually all basically not necessary. You can just buy it unlocked through Apple, who will trade in your phone outright. You can also get everything transferred on your own. If you’re not on eSIM, you can do that conversion and transfer all on your own too.
    The same is true of Androids. Buy it online, pop in the SIM, move on with your day.
    Your mistake was thinking physical retail has any value at in the year of our lord MMXXII. I’ve transitioned between and within the 2 ecosystems a bunch (due to tragic breakages, not wealth 🙃). The manufacturers have a vested interesting in making upgrading super easy and therefore transfer super easy. Once their ads work and you buy the iGalaxy Pro Note, the transaction is over (aside from their attempts to lock you into their proprietary ecosystem). US telecom companies, on the other hand, have a vested interest in being money-grubbing assholes at every available opportunity.

    I love the people in the comments going "Oh, it's because it's an Apple. You should go Android and this wouldn't happen." without realizing that it's not Apple doing this, it's Verizon. AT&T also does this. And they do it for the new Androids, too. They don't just let you buy a new phone. They force you to pay for a contract with them on top of a monthly fee to pay off the phone, usually a 2 year contract. There are many things to bash Apple for, but this isn't one of them.

    • @lokiswager
      @lokiswager ปีที่แล้ว

      Verizon doesn't do contracts. You can pay your phone off early even if it's on payments. You'll just forfeit your discount that you got upon putting the phone on credit. I worked for Verizon customer service for over a year.

      @tmoney1487 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use At&t and they dont do this. I am able to go to just about any store that sells phones and have my phone transferred in like 15 minutes paying cash money. I think this specific version store was just trying to rip joseph off because ive switched phones many times and never had an issue even close to similar to this one. It might be a reigonal thing but ive never ever had this much trouble switching phones, and the last time i switched was about 4 months ago. All i have to do is pay my phone plan every month and im good.

    It's the hampster wheel. You "buy" the most recent iPhone for a reduced rate, make payments until the new one comes out, your phone company runs a new promotion that buys out your current contract, you trade in that phone for the latest model, and the cycle renews. It's a model meant to make sure you keep paying and you pay the maximum amount if you want off the wheel.

    so i've worked in the cellphone industry before and there's a couple of things to note here about what the verizon reps told you: you don't have to finance the phone for 30 days. if anything you could have just gotten the phone, waited 10 mins, walked right back in and said "i'd like to pay the balance on my phone" and no-one could stop you. if anything, if you wanted to, you could've paid everything upto a dollar upfront and they couldn't stop you. verizons' financing minimum is literally a dollar. also, regardless of whether or not you finance the phone, you still own it. verizon doesn't have GTA repo men to go and confiscate your phone. on top of that verizon isn't actually a contract service. if you want to cancel all you have to do is either pay off your phone or cancel if you've already done that. if a cellphone rep ever tells you that you HAVE to stay financing something without explicitly stating that they are a contract service (think like u.s. cellular) you can politely tell them that you're inclined to file a class action suit against the store for attempting to violate their companys' ToS.

    I know the exact experience Joseph was dealing with. I worked for a corporate Verizon store less than a year ago and they really do train their employees to get “green” metrics by any means necessary. I’m talking about making the customer buy so many accessories (3 minimum) with their sale, asking if they want a protection plan, and yes, forcing them to finance the phone. Verizon loses money when they sell the phone upright with no accessories and financing plans, so they do everything in their power to make sure you lean towards their marketing practice. Heck, my store would flat out lie and say they wouldn’t have a phone if they knew you were only there for an upgrade and no accessories/protection plan. There is a work around for the Verizon solutions specialist to not get docked for selling a naked phone (no accessories) and that’s by making the customer buy/upgrade on the Verizon app and process the order as pick up. You see, because these employees make commission, they try to hit green in their metrics so they get the most bonus. If you’re constantly hitting green, I’m not kidding you, you could make up to 6 figures that year. Verizon loves it when you add a line since you’re opening up a new subscription and hates it whenever you upgrade. The employee forcing Joseph finance the phone was semi-lying; yes the trade in value only applies to financing the phone, but should Joseph want to buy the phone upfront, he could have processed that sale too, but good luck with that, these employees are trained to not budge. The philosophy that most mobile companies aim towards are giving customers these trade in credit offers so the customers feel obligated to stay subscribed for the entire 2 years to get that maximum value. In this case, Joseph’s $400 trade in value for the default 24 months would be calculated like this: $400/24 = $16.67 monthly trade in credit towards the bill for 24 months. Now you’re asking, what if I want to put down a down payment towards my purchase? If you put a down payment of $400 towards a $1099 iPhone, that leaves you with $699 you’re financing so it’s going to be $699/24 = $29.13 added towards your bill - the $16.67 a month trade in which means a net of $12.46 a month instead added towards your bill. Should you want to pay off your phone’s balance before the 24 months, you can indeed do so and still have the trade in credit applied to your bill, you just won’t be financing the phone anymore and just enjoy a reduced bill due to the trade in credit in effect.
    Tl;dr: Them Verizon employees don’t make commission money if they sell the phone upright with no finance. They gonna tell you to GTFO.

    This is so brilliant/I identify with these observations so much. After listening to this in the background like 20 times on repeat, two things: 1) The phone isn't $800 more to buy, it's that if you would buy the phone, you are depriving Apple of the $1200 or more extra they would make off of you by leasing it instead of paying cash, so you need to pay them $800 dollars for their assumed loss of that 4 digit number. Sounds more fair in that context, amirite? 2) You're forgetting the other half of the subscription equation that is turning everything into subscription services to capture that extra money people can make off of you using the exact same principle as the "give us $800 now to make up for our would be profits" phone crap. Not to mention the deliberate intent to spread out things enough to maximize money taken out of your pocket by having as many different providers as possible to satisfy your needs. I.E. splitting up shows and movie ip licenses across a wide enough streaming services. It's why 5 of the shows you want to watch (new or old) are across 4 different streaming services.
    Products aren't a thing anymore because they're trying to get blood out of the Turnip that is the economy since we've been pivoting from manufacturing to service sector work for many decades now. And now that we've used up all the legitimate services that people would need and find value in utilizing, we get crap like forced leasing, subscriptions for everything, and "free to play" games.

    A lot of people are missing the real reason phone providers do this and that's these phone companies make more money providing you service over your contract then they lose selling you a phone for less than mrsp so the "financing" is just a way to guarantee you'll stay with them for like 3 years which is when they offer you the shiny new phone for a reduced price ( or sometimes even free) as long as you re-up your contract agreement with them it's why you can sometimes get steaming service with your plan for free too

It's like here are the guidelines for all the other brands and here is the special rules Apple wants to play by because a bunch of idiots think they're worth it.

And not everyone is privileged enough to not have to worry about those things. Not to mention, even if you buy something like that on Credit, your making a commitment to be able to pay that in the future. So are you comfortable enough to say "Yeah, I consistently make money for the next 2-5 year's." and again, not everyone can do that.

    So this isn't entirely accurate. Verizon DOES offer purchasing the phone outright. You just can't get the trade-in value since the trade-in value ONLY applies to financing. The rest is correct. Verizon gets their iphones subsidized through apple. it's not a number they pulled out of their ass. it's an agreed upon amount between them and the distributor (apple.) This is standard practice across all US postpaid carriers. There's a very good reason why they do this too, and that's to reduce churn and attrition. a consumer is more likely to stay with a provider if they are paying monthly on a phone as opposed to purchasing it outright. this is especially true because between all the major us postpaid carriers there is no meaningful difference in their service level, or their pricing.
    Just a little insider information for you.

    Yeah, the phone guy you dealt kind of botched it.
    To try to translate as simply as possible, the iphone you got had a promotion where if you traded your 6 you would get 400 dollars off. This is actually a deal as an iphone 6 is not anywhere near that price, though every new phone launch usually has a similar offer.
    The financing is used to keep you as a customer for a set period of time, usually 2 years. They brake the promo up over the 2 years to incentive you to stick with them. "If you buy it out you loss the promotion"
    The company is basically selling the phone to you at a loss, and 0% financing, just so you can't just jump to a new provider.
    If you are happy with your service/ wasn't planning on leaving in the next 2 years it would be good. He should have offered you the ability to make a down payment that covers the difference, or at least explained how this worked first instead of brushing off your concerns
    Sorry, I work with cellular companies so this got me on ted talk mode lol.

    The worst part about all this is how customer service is more than willing to "do right by you" as long as you actually call them to complain.

    I used to work for Verizon customer service.
    It's extremely unlikely that his phone was worth $400. The actual tradein value would probably be $100 at the very best. But Verizon runs a lot of promotions that can only apply if you are trading in an old phone while buying a new phone on credit, and only if you're buying it on credit. The payment plan runs for 24 months, and your discount comes out to like, $20 a month or something, can't be fucked to do the math. If you pay the phone off early, you forfeit the rest of that credit as well.
    It's a good deal if you don't plan to switch carriers. It's a bad deal if you get fed up with Verizon's service or don't want to put a phone on credit.
