    Can't wait for this! Thanks so much for the run through rahdo. Showing how the Automa works was particularly useful for me as I'll be playing two player & two Automa. The Automa look so easy to use, very streamlined.

    The automata's in all Stonemaier games that have them are absolutely amazing, a perfect way to do a dummy player that doesn't make the player(s) have to go through a lot of hoops to figure out what the dummy player is going to do on a turn.

    I am so happy you enjoyed this one with Jen. I base how much myself and my partner may enjoy games based on you guys as two players. Really looking forward to getting it, regardless of the scaling issue. Thanks for your thoughts.

    Another terrific run-through/review! Thanks again for the quality thoughts. I'm super excited about this game (not so much the "cute" artwork; in fact, that's the one thing giving me brief pause). I really REALLY like the idea of a competitive legacy (Pandemic doesn't do it for me, mostly due to the "breaking the machine" aspect of that game). Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for covering this one! Always look forward to hearing your comments on games.

    I am so excited for this game! I have a group of four other players that I'm hoping will be interested in it. I'm also very curious about playing this solo on the back side. Do you think it would be possible to do both or will I need a recharge pack to play solo on the back?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      you'd need the recharge pack to have 2 seperate campaigns going at the same time, but it should work...

  • @ToxDrawace

    I pre-ordered Charterstone and have been holding on to it since it arrived but have just not been able to get a consistent group together to play it. I've been hesitant to start playing it with my wife as just a 2 player game, but your final thoughts have convinced me! I was also hesitant to use automa as well, as I haven't used them in other games, but it sounds like it is a good idea. However, you mentioned that the automa were too powerful in the first game - I believe the rules suggest not using them in the first game unless you are playing solo.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, i think that "don't use them in the first game" was added to the rules after the early pre-release version that i had, and i would agree :)

    As it's a legacy game do you always need to play with the same number of players or can you accommodate different player counts through the sequence of plays?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, you can swap counts all you like between games, and even use the automa to 'stand in' for player who's only gone for one or two games

    It seems like a very simple / fun game made better by the whole Legacy mechanic. There is nothing like the feeling of finding new stuff, opening "boosters", etc for a game you already own!! I would like to see this on more games, but without a need to get "rebuild packs" and something more undo-able.

    How do you compare the game play and fun-ness factor between Charterstone and 7th Continent? I know they are very, very different, but which one would you enjoy playing more?

    • @rahdo

      hmm, interesting question. i'd say charterstone provides more fun gameplay mechanisms (once you're a few games in... it does start off a bit on the simple side) while 7th continent provides a more rich and evocative experience

    Would you absolutely recommend playing with 6 players instead of 4 if we can ? If we play 4p, would you recommend bumping it up to 6 with the dummy players ?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hmm, i guess i'd suggest playing with 4 at first if that's what you've got, and as the game goes on and the world gets bigger, you might want to add an automa or two if you feel you want more bumping. but really, 4 should be fine (as is 6). tbh if i could, i would have played the whole thing as 6p :)

    a couple of questions wouldn't involved spoilers, but the answers would help my wife and i decide whether to buy the game:
    1) what is the complexity? can you compare it to pandemic legacy or other popular euros? my wife and i like medium to heavy games. where do you think the complexity rating will sit on bgg?
    2) does it have fantasy/ magic? my wife are not into games, with witches, wizards, orcs, casting spells and all that stuff. but we like fictional worlds that are closer related to historical fiction. we can do steam punk too, although it is not our preference. for example, we though forbidden desert was okay, but we prefer pandemic - hands down.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) it starts out super light, like ticket to ride, and by the end it's the equivalent of a gateway worker placement game with 2 or 3 full expansions worth of content layered on to, taking it into solid medium weight territory.
      2) no real way i can answer that without spoilers so scroll down if you want to know...

    What is the playtime per game (sounds like you quickly mention 1 hour)? Is it listed on the box? And do games tend to get longer/shorter as the campaign progresses as there are more choices/options?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the game scales for different player counts, so it's an hour or so regardless of # of players :)
      we did have some games that got up to 90 minutes when we were coming to terms with new rules and whatnot, but still we can get a full game done in around an hour now with everything unlocked and a full sized city :)

    1. Should I add an automa to make 6 players?
    2. If I do, is it worth a rule adjustment to start them at power level 1?
    Thanks, Gary

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      we played through the whole thing using them and thought they worked great. but if you start and decide a game or two in that you'd rather not, you can just stop using them and continue no problem. re: the power level, i think it depends on how you think you'd feel about the automas winning. i suppose if you go in knowing that the first game is slightly tilted in their favor, so it's not much of a suprise, it probably wouldn't be a problem :)

      you can plan infinite games of charterstone because it comes with rules to allow ongoing play after the campaign is done.
      you can play through 2 full campaigns with one copy of charterstone + 1 recharge pack. if you want a 3rd campaign, you'd have to buy another copy of the game

    I've never played a legacy game before, but I think I get the concept. I think you may have mentioned this in the introduction to this game, but for complete clarification, my main question is: Can you keep the board and play a session with what you have accomplished after the 12 sessions (entire campaign) have ended? Basically, is the game useless after completion without getting a, "Recharge Pack"? P.S. Thank you SO much for the videos and your answering of questions and all the work you put into them ^_^ ♥

      basically, jen and i played our first few games building very little because we were worried that if we committed to lower value buildings at the beginning, we'd be at a disadvantage at campaign end against each if we didn't build higher value buildings as well. so for the first few games, we didn't build hardly anything and it sort of stalled things.
      eventually it's revealed in the rules that this isn't something to worry about because you'll be able to

  • @mossydemon1984
    @mossydemon1984 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    the decision making seems one dimensional, I assume the game gains depth as new rules are discovered?
    *edit also how do the 2 automas(sp?) fix the 42 worker placement issue? Seems like 2 less spots and a small chance of being bumped isn't enough to tighten the 2 player map after a few games.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, i seriously considered not showing the 'intro' game because it is misleading by effecitvely being a simple tutorial as so many additional elements get added over the course of the game. but in the end, i decided to stay away from spoilers.
      just becuase there's 42 places on the board doesn't mean they're all created equally. each game, there are specific objectives and milestones equally available to all players, so that tends to make certain actions more attractive from game to game, and ups the chance for humans to interact via bumping.
      automas don't do this, because they don't take objectives into consideration, but instead, they have their own priorities they pursue (that change and evolve over the course of the game) so you can anticipate what they're going to do in similar way.

      yes, you can make that switch. once the visitors are gone, you can keep their characters going with the dummy player system. or if you didn't want to do that, there are 'automated advancement' rules for the sectors that are no longer controlled by actual players.
      you could also bring other players back in for a game or two, mid way through the campaign. though they would not be able to compete for the big end campaign contest

    At the 15:15 mark of the video you talk about something you discover that would change how you played the first game. Could you share that here? Maybe just put a spoiler alert in the comment if people don’t want to know. Giving this game to my wife for Christmas. Thanks!

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      basically it was that we sort of stalled our game during the early campaign because we were worried about putting low value buildings in our land that would negatively impact our final scores at campaign end. what we didn't know was that we shouldn't have worried about that because features open up during gameplay that let you alter the buildings already present...

    To be fair... the instructions tell you not to include the automas until after your first coupe of games... probably for the very reason you stated not liking them in the early games.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the problem is the rules also say that if they're not included in the entire game from start to finish, they "don't count" in the final campaign tally at the end...

    Thanks for the review. I don’t know why I am not feeling it for this game. I want to but something is strangely not clicking. Perhaps it just has to be experienced first hand as run through without spoilers simply can’t convey the true in game feel.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      one thing that the video can't get across of course is how much more involved the gameplay gets. i probably should have talked about this a bit more in the final thoughts, but the game starts out super simple, like ticket to ride simple. after a few games, it gets up to, say, basic viticulture complex with the added stuff. by the end, it's like viticulture with all expansions active at once :)

      "Than" not "then". "Then" is for sequence while "than" is for comparison.

    Hi Richard, thanks for the great review. Especially the comparison to Viticulture (which I already own and love) as well as the info about the general quality of the story helped me to decide not to buy it,as I'll have my first legacy fix with gloomhaven. Also I don't like the art style very much, which of course is very subjective.
    Thanks again and keep up the great work.

    • @alcann4234
      @alcann4234 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ruwen -- Gloomhaven is not a "legacy" game along the lines of Pandemic Legacy, Risk Legacy, Seafall and Charterstone. You will not be getting your legacy "fix" from Gloomhaven.

    • @ruwenbussinger8550
      @ruwenbussinger8550 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Al Cann thanks for pointing out. I am aware of the little legacy-ness of Gloomhaven but will have it as a starting point and then maybe go deeper with Pandemic Legacy. Charterstone does appeal to me because of above mentioned reasons too little to buy.

    • @alcann4234
      @alcann4234 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's fair. I ordered Charterstone but I am a little under impressed with the artwork ... it looks a little childish and I like heavier more serious appearing games. That is why I really liked Seafall despite its flaws. Just wanted to point out about Gloomhaven -- it's world creating quality is fairly small part of the game, but it is a lot of fun. I love "legacy" games and Gloomhaven does not scratch that itch!

    • @ruwenbussinger8550
      @ruwenbussinger8550 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Al Cann yeah, I think I ordered gloomhaven more for its general merits than just for the legacy part. Looking forward to playing it. Totally agree on your point concerning artwork and reading through some comments it seems as if that's the case for quite a few people. That was actually the first thing really putting me off when I watched the "watch it played" video. During that video something else also made me dislike the game but I can't really put my finger on it. Maybe my opinion changes if I actually try it out.

      You'll love Gloomhaven. Great solo also. I managed to get lucky and nab it in the first print run so I am almost finished with the campaign. Hopefully a GH 2 is in the works. Good chatting with you ... enjoy GH!

    The answer to the question is why Atoma wins in Game 1. Alert! Minor SPOILER.

    In the final Game 1 we learn the rule 26 - End of Game:
    "...
    4. NON-WINNER(S): Name your charter (write it on the board). Also, as a show of humality, each winning charter must now be named by the non-winners.
    ..."
    In this way, if Atoma does not win, he will have to name his own charter. But if Atoma is winner then his charter will be named by other players.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      interesting hypothesis, although if you check the automa rules, there's actually game specific rules it follows listed on the last page, so they could have addressed that in another way. still, i like the way you think :)

    They can't make bumping at lower player counts, because then you'll complain that the game is too mean.

      carson city introduced bumping workers in 2009

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      not really. bumping workers in my estimation is a very different thing than troyes (which is an area control game) and lancaster (which is an auction game disguised as a worker placement game).
      for me, worker bumping means a game where your workers will *never* be returned to you unless a) they're bumped by someone else or b) you have to spend time or resources of some sort getting them back.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmm, sort of, but still a bit different. definitely closer than troyes or lancaster though :)
