Great upload, I always wanted to hear a Ilmor/Mercedes-Benz V8. What's unique about the engine, it's around 10,000 rpm, as Bobby Unser describes it. Basically, it's like the 2nd version of the (wish mobile). This was a one-off thing for the Indy 500, Roger Penske wanted another victory, as why the other teams thought this was an unfair avantage, because 2 out of 3 Penske drivers dominated the Indy 500, with Al Unser Jr. claiming victory. Anyways, great upload, a deserving thumbs up.

Roger Penske, with his resources coupled with Illmor's engineering and fabrication and whatever Mercedes brought to the table... Very impressive.

When Pole day was a must see. Now a days it’s a ghost town. Thanks Tony George.

that may change this year with 40 cars trying to qualify!

dominick virgilio that is what I’m hearing however juncos racing still hasn’t completely confirmed their drivers for the 500 yet. Also will Andretti add a couple more cars along with last minute entries that seem to come in late spring right before the 500 ? I don’t think it will be 40 cars. I hope I am wrong and it is 40 cars.

I was questioning what you said, then remembered that i haven't rewatched any indy qualifying from around 2000 onwards, so just from that obviously, at least for me, you couldn't be more correct!
      Hope you're good.

That was a dominating engine at the 500. The same rules they made for the Buick. And Penske took avantage of thanks for the upload uploaded

The rules were very vague, the only stipulation that identified a "stock block" engine was the fact they were push rod instead of over head cam. And Stock blocks were allowed extra turbo boost. So, Penske made a purpose built racing engine that had push-rods instead of being overhead cam... so.... by definition, it was stock block (thus the extra boost) even though it was clearly a purpose built. Pretty shrewd on Penske's part.

Always fascinating to re-watch these and see who waved off times that would have made it or vice versa, for example Scott Goodyear surely regretted waving a solid high 221 run when he got bumped later, or at least Davy Jones regretted this wave off

It's astonishing that ABC (I don't blame Sam Posey for that, as he was just reading from a script) on that segment about M-B's racing history flat out ignored the 1955 Le Mans disaster-arguably the greatest on-track tragedy in all of motorsports history and not only was directly responsible not only for M-B's removal from all motorsport activities for over 35 years, but was also directly responsible for the creation of the United States Auto Club by Tony Hulman after the American Automobile Association stepped down as a motorsports sanctioning body as a result of that incident as well as that year's Indy 500 where Manuel Ayulo was killed in practice and 2-time defending race champion Billy Vukovich, Sr. was killed during the race while leading.

From 1950 to 1960, the Indianapolis 500 was a part of the Formula 1 World Championship which is a reason why F1 drivers from the United States have the most points scored in the history of the World Championship and the winners of the 500 between those years were scoring points for the World Championship while the F1 regulars were still in Europe although Ferrari did make an attempt to qualify for the 500 in the 50's.

I noticed that as well. It was because of the 1955 LeMans disaster, Mercedes pulled out of motorsports until the late 1980s when the Sauber team ran their sports cars in Group C.

The problem with the popoff valves was more USAC than the popoff valves themselves. They were occasionally faulty in CART, but they seemed to be an issue rather consistently at The Speedway.
Tatiana Fittipaldi was already a lovely young lady at 13; Max Papis has good taste!

I liked Matsuda. Although he didn't last in 1994, he buried forever a large number of tasteless Asian driving jokes in the process.

He sneaked into the Top 10 just before his crash on raceday (just before Vitolo jumped onto Mansell).

He also help split Indycar as well with going to the IRL. Him complaining about pop off values was a major part in forming the IRL. However the original IRL formula was horrible and CART was better by Miles.
