No kidding. That 95 Reynard to this day IMHO remains the peak of an IndyCar chassis. It was just so beautifully designed on top of being so technologically advanced. Even Arie Luyendyk said that chassis was so good when he was using it at the speedway in 96 that his team considered taking the rear wing off because they kept trimming it out and trimming it out and it only got faster.
But yea, what I'll miss most are those Turbo V8's. I wish there was some way for Indycar today to replicate that sound in their engines today because it was just so freakin good to listen to. It was for a lack of a better word orgasmic to my ears.

Without a doubt, this was the biggest Bump Day upset ever. But 2011 may have been the most dramatic Bump Day in history. Marco, Briscoe, Conway, Hunter-Reay, Danica, Graham, and Paul Tracy (all of whom could be expected to hunt for a Top 10 if not contend for the win) all had to fight their way into the field, and not all of them made it. Not the same caliber as Al Jr & Emmo, but more noteworthy drivers were involved.

I have been to 35 Indy 500s and myriads of qualifications....you watch them on TV and it looks fast but when your at the speedway and sitting in turn one you really get a sense of how fast they are going....my wife and I were at the speedway this may for qualifying and got to see those guys going into turn three at 243 ... when they come out of turn 4 heading down towards the yard of bricks they look like a dart....there isn't any place like the Indianapolis motor speedway...you can just feel the history when you walk thru the gates...I admonished any race fan to put Indy on there bucket list...the speedway won't disappoint...🏎️🏎️🏎️

Penske wheeled & dealed..but when the 6 o'clock gun went off, it all stopped. The Penske Team simply went back to the garage, locked the doors, cut their losses, and took it like the men and champions they are. I applaud them for that. Why? They could have with 8 teams at the 1996 Indy 500. But CART wanted to go with a moral victory race due to the 25/8 rule. Also it’s quite ironic that Roger and AJ were talking like friends at the beginning but hated each other in CART and AJ led the charge for the split and Tony George was happy to oblige. Also roger knew the next time not to run black and gold at Indy. That car looks horrible don’t know what roger was thinking at that time not having the classic red and white liverly.

I support the principles that INDY stands for. I'm talking about EARNING your way into the field, by being one the 33 fastest car & drivers, not BUYING IT. Atfer the 6:00pm gun in '95 ,Did Penske try to pimp a ride for "Little Al"? NO! How about Emmo? NO! The team went back to G/Alley, locked the doors, & took it like men. I respect him for that. Piss away your "dollars" I'll stick to the true idealism of what Indy is intended to be. Integrity is not something you BUY...don't you know that?

He meant paying a qualified driver to sit out and put his drivers in. And yes, Penske did make a deal with Rahal. That was Bobby paying the favor back for 1994,when he had to lease two of Roger's backups to make the field.

Panoz didn't actually LEAVE, they just fell so far behind nobody wanted to use the chassis. It was still legal for series use in 2007 but due to lack of development is now only allowed in the 500. But of course, it's so far behind that nobody in their right mind would use it.

@TheCarlsonsRaiders I agree IRL racing lost a lot of quality but your statement is wrong: Castroneves took the 2010 pole with a 227.970; the three bumped cars in 1995 ran in the 224's. In fact the 1996 field (without CART teams) still has the record for the fastest single lap, the fastest four laps, and the 2nd fastest field ever. In 1997 when they went to the non-turbos the field average dropped from nearly 228 down to 212! The fastest average qualifying field was at 228.654 in 2002.

Only one engine has been allowed in the IndyCar Series since 2006 as Toyota and Chevrolet left at the end of 2005. Panoz left after the 2006 season.
Today's Dallara Honda just has to be driven flat-out to keep up the speed, but the old CART machines had a great balance of power and downforce.

Only because they let them run plenty of different styles. Nothing wrong with IndyCar sanctioning it, as their own series: so long as the options remain open, and they let them go after track records. It's a dangerous sport (Godspeed, Dan)...and they have to be allowed to be badasses.

Other teams used that engine & made the race. It was a combination of the chassis not being as good as it should've been & the 1995 Mercedes Engine not having the power to compensate for it like the 1994 Engine did, that's why they failed to make the show. Roger shoulda swallowed his pride & borrowed a Reynard Chassis earlier than he did, one of Emmo's speeds was actually fast enough to make the show but Roger waived off the attempt. Crazy thing is that Unser Jr would finish 2nd at Michigan later that year in the same engine & chassis combo...

AH-HAH! I KNEW IT!! You're a marketer for RHR Sponsors! You don't give a CRAP about the the rich, sacred traditions, as well as of code of performance, integrity and pure sport, that makes the Indy 500 the Greatest Race in the World. You can take your RC, your Sun Drop, and your clearly AA bias views, and use it as a suppository! Give your tickets to someone who appreciates what it really means to qualify and race at Indianapolis.

  • @thevmanvj
    @thevmanvj 12 ปีที่แล้ว

You obviously have no respect for the long-standing tradition and code of performance that this race demands and deserves.
This code goes far beyond the realms of what you loosely call "business".
This race itself means MORE than that....this race is GREATER than that.
This code of integrity and respect for the traditions of this race need to be observed by everyone involved....no matter what it may cost.

USAC screwed Penske in 1995. Roger sunk so much money in the engine from 1994 that they didn't have as much money to develop the chassis. Watch the '94 500. Penskes were slow in the turns but extremely fast down the straights. So fast that Emmo lapped the entire field except for Little Al, who lapped the entire field except for Villenueve. Emmo had the race easy but crashed trying to lap Little Al. The engine had so much more speed that USAC banned it in 1995. All the rest of the races the Penske Car was fast with Little Al winning 4 races and only finished 2nd in the points because of a few breakdowns and getting caught up in someone else's crash. USAC was famous for mismanaging the 500. Goodyear won the race but passed the pace car because USAC thought it would be cool to put a celebrity in it for the entire race. They always let the cars pick up speed in the short chute between 3 and 4 so the turbo could get lit up and restarts wouldn't be at a dangerous crawl going into turn 1. When Goodyear came out of 4 the pace car was going about 55 mph when it should have been going 95 mph. That's why they black flagged him. They should have black flagged the pace car driver. In all reality they should have waved off the restart and instructed the pace car driver what he should be doing and that he just about caused a pile up in turn 4. Complete f-bomb up by USAC race officials and really stupid to put a celebrity in the pace car instead of the regular IndyCar pace car driver. I forget the celebrity's name because I was at the race and only heard about it later on and never watched the race on tv until TH-cam came out. I remember thinking why isn't the pace car flying by like it normally does. I was sitting in that short chute where I could see down the straight a little ways and saw all the cars about running into the back of each other.

No ugly ducklings in the back of the field anymore. Now let's get the turbos back, get some variety of chassis and engines, and get those speeds up! With better safety features I'd like to see these cars over 240mph at IMS.
