Oh Amanda you are going to have some beautiful plants. Thanks for sharing the process of these barefoot plants. Looking forward to seeing them bloom and turn into some gorgeous plants. Best garden teacher!
The last few years I have had good luck starting my caladiums in a 10 x 20 tray. It doesn’t take a lot of soil or a lot of space so it is an efficient way to get them started. I haven’t ever soaked them beforehand but I will try that this time, and see if they sprout sooner, when starting them in a 10 x 20 tray, you have to water carefully so that they stay moist but not waterlogged. I have started these indoors and I usually set them on the floor next to my light tray so they get some light but do not take up precious space on my seedling rack. I’m just next door to you in Mesquite, zone 8. 🌸
Great tips on bareroot planting. I usually buy caladium and begonia plants but it makes sense to try them bare root. I end up spending much more money for plants that aren't hardy in my 7b garden. I have lots of astillbe because they do very well in my environment.
I really needed this information on the astilbe. First time trying! I watch other channels but since I found you I watch you first now!! Especially being in my zone! You are a great Teacher & so fun too!!💙💙💙💙🦋🦋😂😂
I was able to divide one of the astilbe bare roots I got in my pack from HD and they both are doing fantastic in their nursery pots. Love bonus plants. 🙌🏽 I have several sizable shady areas that need plants.
The content of your channel is very helpful and interesting. I watch so many garden channels but the info you put out is most useful of them all!! Thank you!!
I enjoyed your video of starting bare root plants. I walked out of Home Depot wishing I would have bought caladiums and elephant ears. Next trip to town I’ll pick up some. The begonias are beautiful, I’ll have to look for them too!
Fl 9b (10) - we have been planting non stop. Some of the non cold tolerant plants I started inside. My evergreens I am putting in the ground and mulching. If we get a frost warning I have been placing frost clothes over them. The cool atmosphere is wonderful for us. I hope everyone will get their hands in the soil soon.
Thank you! I was looking at ALL my bags of tubers and bare roots last night and thinking why do I do this to myself??😳 Breaking it up into shade/sun is a great idea. I do lots of caladiums and because they love hot tropical conditions I found putting on a heat pad helps get them going a little quicker.
Thanks. Very helpful. I bought a bag of bare root coneflowers at Walmart a couple years ago, planted them in the garden, watered once and prob ever again. Where are they now? Dead. I’m going to try to better this time. Looking forward to your next videos.
I grew begonias from tubers for the first time last year. I ready many articles and they all said that begonias are super sensitive to too much moisture. I had never considered soaking them! Have you done that before? The tubers i grew last year were gorgeous, although i started 10 of them (a costco pack) and only 6 of them are still healthy this year 😂 definitely a learning curve for me! I lost 2 before they even sprouted, 1 during the summer, and 1 over the winter. They sure are finnicky!
I grabbed a package of bleeding hearts and I bought 2 of the coral sunset peonies. I did pot them up but not sure whether to go ahead and plant in the ground or just bigger pot it's still to cold here to really plant them out because it's not unusual to still see temps below freezing. I'm in 5b-6a
I love your videos! I went crazy in Costco after seeing your shopping videos and wondered if there are other bare roots and bulbs you recommend we start early inside? Like you I got bleeding heart and caladium and also ranunculus, peonies, daylilies, tigridia, Cala lily, balloon flower, clematis, liatris, phlox and Dalias! I’m overwhelmed. Plus I have seedlings filling my basement.
I’d start all of those except the ranunculus and liatris … in my zone it’s too late for ranunculus but if you are a cooler zone, you can still go for it. Liatris are better planted directly in the ground.
Planning on buying caladium this year, thanks for the info. I did first attempt at overwinterizing 2 plants (I'm zone 6) but think basement spot was got cold. Crossing my fingers and toes
Hi Amanda, thank you for such an informative and helpful video. Great tips! I was wondering if you could share where your pretty floral stickers are from? They always look so nice on the pages alongside your handwriting ⚘️
Sometimes it is impossible to tell which way is up on bare root. Walmart had the black elephant ear bulbs on sale for 80% off the other day. Might want to check that out
Thank you so much for this video!!! I attempted to do this last year with limited success. I appreciate all you share so much! Where did you get the trays you put the pots in?
@@shesamadgardener grabbed the trays and potted up my first caladiums. I presoaked them and found one them floated and realized it was rotted, thought that was interesting and helpful.
@shesamadgardener I went there yesterday. I didn't only buy one because I needed to start some seeds. Let me know if you find a better price somewhere else.

Agreed! Saving a little here and there will let you focus on some additional plants for the garden.

I’m loving the bare roots videos! I wouldn’t have picked up some of my own if I hadn’t watched you.
Yay! I’m glad you are giving them a try!
What a great video, I just bought Bleeding Hearts bare roots and I am so excited to have them in my garden 😊
Yay!
Thank you for sharing how to do bate roots. I have not always been successful in the past and now know what to do. Now to go shopping 😊😅
You got this 💪
You are absolutely awesome. I have learnt so much from you.

I might have to give astilbe a try. Thanks!
You should!

I’ve soaked them before! The key is to not over soak them!
Really helpful video. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Oh, uh-oh I did not pre soak but they seem to be doing okay I’ll have to see how they do
No worries! This is how I do it but that doesn’t mean it’s the only way to start barefoot roots!
So excited to try this!❤

If you have any extremely cold temps in the forecast, I would hold off on planting them outside.
I just got my elderberry sticks to grow. Planted one in pot already.
Yay!
Thank you this helped me a lot.

Nice!
I had huge bleeding hearts at my former childhood home. I hated to leave that property in 2015. ⚾️
They are such unique blooms!
I need to get my hands on the Astilbe!!! Can I do this process with the Dutch Iris?
Hmm, I would think so but I’ve never done it. If you try, keep me updated on how it does!
Thank you so much for this video!!! I attempted to do this last year with limited success. I appreciate all you share so much! Where did you get the trays you put the pots in?
They are from Amazon … you can use the link in the video description to my Storefront.

If you get bare roots when it is warm do you still suggest growing in a pot? I have Astilbe on the way zone 9a May.
It’s totally up to you … I grow in a pot so I can control the environmental factors.
Where did you get that the wonderful apron?
I got it on TEMU but you can also buy it on Amazon.
All i want is the caladium. Checked home Depot, but they dont have it. Ill check Costco next.
Hope you find them!
Where will you put all of the newly potted bare roots? Are you putting them in the greenhouse or keeping indoors?(forgive me if you said it.)
I’m keeping them inside for now but you can definitely start them in the greenhouse.
Hey, the BM7 price went up to $27 dollars for a bag now.
Really? They were still under $19 last week at my nursery … where did you buy yours?
@shesamadgardener I went there yesterday. I didn't only buy one because I needed to start some seeds. Let me know if you find a better price somewhere else.
