    Just reminiscing- in 1970 my family lived on Clark St in Brooklyn Heights when it was in bad shape. We moved back to the city for a year from Long Island and it was hard to make friends..I was 9. Everyday after school and every summer day I would walk down to the Promenade and watch the amazing construction of the Twin Towers. Everyday they got higher and seemed so close to Brooklyn that it seemed I could reach out and touch them. What a thrill then and now a bit of a bittersweet memory.

I lived up near to the financial area however, not the Bronx or mid town which were the most dangerous areas especially at night hence the phrase lights out. All my friends absolutely despised the 1970s because of their memories in the 1950s and 60s, but it wasn't all bad. I much prefered Chicago all'be only visting twice in 48' and 72' and Denver was quite nice when we went in 1954 one winter for Christmas. Miami was fun in the 1980s as well.

      It's also weird to think that they were supposedly so outdated by the early 2000s too, those were pretty new buildings for NYC standard I thought. I've heard conspiracy theorists talk about asbestos, multiple unused floors, the cost that it would take to rewire the building for modern internet setup. I always thought of WTC as a breathtaking building and thought that it was gorgeous on the inside. But apparently there are many out there who think there would be legitimate reasons why it would be logical to detonate the buildings.

    As someone who's in the construction industry, I'm in awe of how they were able to build the Trade Center towers and open them in back in 1971 at a time when CAD was in its infancy (and finite element modelling), there were no e-mails, mobile phones, Office applications, etc. How did they perform those calculations, organize logistics, construct the damn things? Simply amazing. Hats off to the architects, engineers, project managers, contractors who made it all possible. I have seen so many documentaries about it, but none of them do it any justice. I wish I was around to see it all happen.

      Pre-fabricated steel grids were welded on top of other pre-fabricated steel grids until they reached a height of 1368 Feet for the North Tower and 1362 Feet for the South tower... held together by wear floor trusses... That is how they were built. These "Death traps" were so superb they fell down even though they were struck around 85% of the way up the building.
      Using the exterior walls for the strength of a building this tall was never a good idea. Almost certainly why they were "Targeted" by terrorists...
      Sears Tower in Chicago was opened just a few MONTHS after these "Death traps" were completed.
      The build quality of Sears Towers is FAR superior... And Sears Towers is 83 Feet taller than the former WTC towers. They were not that big of a deal. The design dated very quickly ..These ugly-looking eye sores were not that big of a deal.
      Feel so bad for the poor souls who lost their lives on September 2001 ..But I don't miss these ugly-looking death traps. So pleased they never rebuilt them.

Seeing that parking lot at the very end filled with nothing but land yacht sedans, coupes, and station wagons instead of SUVs, trucks, and crossovers just blows me away! Just to think when this footage was made, these cars were brand new or a couple of years old. That's it! They were daily drivers back then! Wow, this classic video is a treasure, Thank you for sharing! They manage to capture footage of a lot of iconic sights in (NY), even in the Bronx, (Yankee Stadium), but most of all, the construction of the Twin Towers, (RIP), God bless and comfort the families that lost loved ones on that infamous day when the US was attacked by cowards, and I thank God that I had the liberty of working across the street from the Twin Towers at a banking corporation called (Bankers Trust Company) which later got taken over by a German bank called (Deutsche Bank). The NYC skyline will never be the same without the Twin Towers!!!

    • @MrJamesgrate
      @MrJamesgrate 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Amen, I believe the (WTC) tragedy affected every human being on earth, when I first saw the first tower collapsed, it felt so unreal, I thought I was watching some type of movie or something, then reality sunk in and I felt the heaviness, the shock everyone there must have been feeling, knowing I used to report to work, just across from the WTC. Our corporate headquarters was damaged, and then rule out to be severely damage and contaminated with body parts, we could no longer occupy the building. The last time I been to New York, I tried to find the location of where (Bankers Trust stood, 130 Liberty street), I didn't recognize the area anymore, but I am glad they decided to construct a new WTC, even though it is not as spectacular as the twin towers!

    I know I'm old when I didn't care what NYC meant to me in 1970 and now in my mind I'm reliving those moments with such nostalgic fondness, back then I thought the city was ugly and dirty, drug addicts shooting dope in the sidewalks, 42th street full of hookers, the Bronx full of muggers but right now I wish I went back .Now I realize life's so short .

    I was living in a state-run facility in Avenel section of Woodbridge, NJ of this 1970 rare footage. Woodbridge Developmental Center, founded in 1965, is an Intermediate Care Residential Facility for individuals with developmental disabilities. Currently, the facility is designed to accommodate 576 residents who live in 18 Cottages. Each Cottage is the home for 32 individuals.
    I left Woodbridge in the fall of 1971 and lived with my parents in 1973.
