American auto design took a step nose dive after the Oil Crisis of 1973 forced Detroit to "economize" and produce slightly more fuel-efficient "economy autos" that met new regulatory standards. The result? Ugly lemons that lacked the power, durability, ride quality, comfort, and sleek aesthetic of cars from the 1950s and '60s.The auto industry hasn't recovered since its '70s nadir, IMO!
I remember those stores... gone now. There were a lot of hippies in NYC from 1967-1973 but you never see any in these films, more of the business sector shows. Either way, I love seeing these..., so glad some people were out there with cameras to capture and preserve all this.
Yes, I was 3 living in Greenwich Village with my hippie mom when this was filmed. All I remember about NYC was playing in Washington Square Park being surrounded by hippies and their naked children!
Ahhhh… The Pan Am Building hovering over Grand Central, Fillmore East, Schaefer Music Festival in the Park, Times Square a sausage soup of peep shows and Broadway plays, Mobsters fully active in Little Italy, Macy’s Herald Square, The Bowery littered with rundown bars and winos, edgy and dangerous East Village, real delis, 25 cent pretzels from the carts, etc., etc.! THE BEST YEARS!

Best & Co. department store was just north of St. Patricks (2:51), where Olympic Tower now stands. Sad loss. I think the Royal Manhattan Hotel (5:32) became the Milford Plaza and is currently The Row.
Funny running into you here on youtube, Peter. Oh yes, Best & Co. Back in the late 60's, my mother and sister just missed seeing Jackie O and Caroline in the children's clothing department at Best's. The saleswoman told them Jackie and Caroline had been in buying clothes for Caroline just a few minutes earlier. Do you remember Leslie Gore who had a big hit with the song. It's My Party in the mid 60s. In the late 60s, when Leslie was at Sarah Lawrence College, she MC'd a fashion show in Best's junior department. All the models were ballerinas from the Joffrey Ballet. I just happened to be there shopping and watched the show. Keep sewing -- nancy2001.
As the period between the Twin Towers' construction and horrible demise was just over a generation, it is likely some of those blue collars lived long enough to witness, on TV or with their own eyes, the building that they put their blood, sweat, and tears into come suddenly crashing down to the streets of lower Manhattan after less than an hour of being intentionally struck by aircraft. Talk about an awful experience!!!
are people in NY kidding back 5:45 and the cars parked so close they are practically boxed in and touching each other? how on earth would someone move their car if they needed to leave?
@@markbender49 That's how they still park in Paris, Rome, and other street parking-scarce European cities, though it's a little easier what with the smaller cars over there. Maneuvering those '60s-70s land yachts into and out of tight Manhattan parking spaces must've been quite a sight to see!
No ,it sucks. Repetitive garbage. Not an impressive video at all, and not because of the picture quality (it's 1970!) but just the lousy unnecessarily long shots of sides and tops of bldgs!
1940s New York felt they missed out on roaring 1920s New York. 1970s New York grew a fondness of 1950s New York. 2020s New York is on a Y2K kick right now. Nostalgia goes in circles.

Keep hoping to see my new 1969 Mustang Boss 429 prowling the streets but it's not there - it would have been too frightening for most pedestrians - jaws would have been dropping - cute girls trying to jump into the car etc ..
The city was a dump by this time, not sure why everyone is nostalgic. The city was dirty and run down, trains were disgusting. There were 1800 homicides in 1971
The person filming must have thought let me film buildings and monuments, they may not be around for the next 50 years, sadly the twin towers are gone, but man I really wanted the filming focused on people and not the bloody buildings.
It wasn't fully built at that time: you can see footage of the towers under construction (just the metal framework) in the picture "The Hot Rock" (filmed in 1971).

I moved to the Atlanta area but flying to New York is actually very easy since both airports are major hubs
