  • Bob and Iain Wallace of Chestnut Hill Nursery show you how to properly plant a fruit tree (or any other tree) for maximum growth and success! They discuss the three main aspects (watering, fertilizing and protecting) that are crucial in the establishment and success of any tree - along with a few other helpful tips that come from owning and operating a successful nursery!!

    I would cut the tarp to the middle like a Christmas tree squirt and not try to go trough the gentle branches. Much easier 😉

    I would also add the mulch if chunky, could create air pockets in the hole as well.

      Glad it helped! Planting remotely can be tough, but can be done! Good luck!

    nice lil video guys. gonna be planting my tail off out in colorado these coming months with dormant trees and cuttings. i like the bucket method since i work mon thru thursday and fri-sun is my farm days. I think i got a good way of getting my back 30 acres that doesnt have alot of pump access at all. i may have to go buy a water tank for my truck and bring it past a creek bed and close to and up the hill as i can and put a sump pump to it and pump water up 20 to 30 feet high and probably a 40x40 area if i want to fully forrest my acres.

      @Whitetail_Properties  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very cool! a water tank is key for the buckt method, especially if the trees are going to be in more of a remote area of your property like you mentioned. Good luck!!

      @@Whitetail_Properties I may get an excavator(rental) and might dig out another pond where that natrual spring comes out on my creek bed and just sump pump up to a water tank possibly and sump pump as needed to the cuttings/trees if i get that situatated. I got alot of planting to do in the mean time else where and alot of patiently waiting for stuff to propagate. since im going the cheap route.

    You could plant the trees and you could water the trees but if you do not train the trees meaning the scaffold branches the tree will get a bark inclusion meaning that the branch will grow operate competing with the stem of the tree that’s forming a bad union between the branch and the stem and any weight put on that bridge will ultimately break it with us leaving a scar on the stem and lead to disease and we all know what disease does it spreads and will kill your orchard faster than any thing else so you have to train the scaffold branches of the tree and all of the tree to produce fruit and withstand the weight of the fruit or any ice and snow in the winter months.

    Any ideas on how to keep the black bears from damaging the apple trees after we plant them

    What size drill bit provides the best drip rate for watering using a 5 gallon bucket as shown in the video? Great video thank you.

    • @Whitetail_Properties
      @Whitetail_Properties  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! 1/32 is what we would recommend. Going that small you will want to make sure to periodically check the hole and clear debris/algae that might form.

    What are your thoughts on tree tubes for chestnuts? I live in central Michigan and I hear that tubes can cause a greenhouse effect on the trees during a sunny winter day causing the tree to slightly break dormancy and get burnt.

    • @Whitetail_Properties
      @Whitetail_Properties  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pretty unlikely that a grow tube would cause a tree to break dormancy. If that were to happen it would be quite rare. We specifically use plantra grow tubes which are breathable but also create a small greenhouse effect, but probably not so significant that it would trick the plant into coming out of dormancy. However, people do use makeshift tree tubes out of black plastic pipe which may create the situation you're describing.
      Plants do give off some heat, which is why a grove of trees may be a couple degrees warmer during the winter than an open field. However, plants do not radiate heat as much as an animal. especially when they are dormant.
      Hope this helps!

    is this what a fruit tree would look like size wise if ordered online?

    • @Whitetail_Properties
      @Whitetail_Properties  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are different sizes available but the standard size shipped is the one gallon trees.

    Probably a dumb question, but at what point of the year do you stop watering? If it's below 50 degrees? 32?

    • @Whitetail_Properties
      @Whitetail_Properties  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      On a first year planting, watering up until the tree goes dormant is what we would recommend. As it starts to get cooler in the fall, your watering regime can slow down, but continue to water once or twice a week until the tree is dormant.

    00:22 This is a BIG MISTAKE put pots on the mattress.
    Black mattress ??? Are you going to COOK those pots, very nice...
    Why don't we just barbeque ???
    We never do that since the plants need a lot of energy beside soil in the pot.
    Access to ecosystem under the pot providing BEST RESULTS for growing.
    We put pots on the PRE CONFIGURED FERTILE SOIL.
    More innovations comes with GREAT RESULTS.
    Create such a collective pot cover several pots,
    will boost your tree productivity.

    He had me until "ground cloth" came out. When are people going to learn to use mulch and wood chips for that!

    • @Whitetail_Properties
      @Whitetail_Properties  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The ground cloth is more effective at keeping grass and weeds at bay. You can remove it once the tree is established.

    • @MasterKenfucius
      @MasterKenfucius หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Whitetail_Properties That's not a question of effectiveness. Roundup is effective too, but you don't want it there. Mulch provides continuous nutrition, enhances the soil fauna, and keeps it cooler. Black plastic cloth does the exact opposite of all that and is not recommended.
