I planted a forest two years ago

  • FOREST UPDATE 2023: In August of 2021 I loaded up my old ute and old trailer with 1440 trees, bundles of long sticks, a hand of bananas, pogo-stick-planter, dirty swag, slippery tin of sunscreen and a pair of bespoke gumboots lined with running innersoles. My aim was to plant a tree a minute for 24 hours. I did it, just, plodding away with the final trays of trees as if I was wounded. In the film ‘A tree a minute’ my final text said ‘I’ll make a follow up film in two years’. So here I am, as promised, revisiting the small 2.5 acre plot on my good friends block to see how this old creek, once cleared, is getting on as a newly fledged patch of forest.

I am in Texas, when we got our property in 1984 I was 11 years old. My Dad was clearing the land with his brush hog and my Mom stopped him at 1 hackberry tree about 2 feet tall and said "Lets keep this one" I am 50 years old now and both parents are gone but the tree stands in the middle of my yard at an astounding 90 feet tall. I think about them discussing if they should let the tree grow or not and I am so glad they did. That tree gives me memories of them every time I walk out of my house.

My wife's grandpa just passed away recently and was an avid tree planter. He would wake up and plant trees all the time. In 2003 he was NRD's "tree planter of the year" planting over 100,000 with his family. My wife told me stories about how they would wake up and his children and grandchildren never wanted to go plant trees. Looking back however, those are some of their fondest memories. Taking care of our planet is one of the best things anyone can do in my opinion. Hats off to you and your family.

What a hero your wife's grandpa for doing this! Here in Holland we are harvest trees sibbelings wich are in the wrong place so that they cannot grow to adult trees. Then they go to tree hubs where farmers, and people who want to have one or more threes to plant can get them for free. It also gives sastisfaction to do this and this concept is now also starting in Germany and Ireland. So that we can make the planet much faster greener with trees. It is called meerbomennu in Holland.

Brought tears to my eyes, remembering the original video. We've been looking after a half-acre plot in northern France for the last fifteen years, planted upwards of 50 trees, most but not all still surviving, and as a side benefit have had many kilos of plums, pears, apples and, in the last two years, walnuts, to say nothing of the sensual pleasure of sitting among the trees. But really this planting, like yours, is about a future we will never see. We're almost 80 now, and who knows what will happen in 2, 20 or 200 years. But you have to trust that you're leaving the place in a better shape than when you started - that's all anyone can ask.

Well done.!! One year a politician for the Green Party dropped off a spruce seedling at every door. I asked everyone I knew if they didn't want the little trees I would take them. I planted them, maybe about 8, in a patch of forest in a clearing behind our house. The first few years I watered them and kept the grass back. They are native to our area and they took off. When we moved away 16 years later they were 20' tall and fantastically healthy. So I get what you are saying.

The grass is a real killer of new tree saplings, since it chokes them out. Takes all the water. Blocks the sun etc. It's one of the biggest mistake i see people who plant new tree's make.

I'm so glad he took the time to talk to and encourage the plants that were downtrodden; there are many experiments done that plants respond to, and grow more healthily to positive human words and music. After two years alone from being planted, I guarantee your one visit there will boost those trees up to sky-high from that encouragement.

So inspiring Beau - thanks so much for this beautiful update 🥲🥰 I've planted mini forests of 12 - 20 trees every weekend from autumn to early spring this year. (So your feat is off the charts!) I've added understory trees like grevilleas and bottlebrush in with the bigger wattles and eucalypts. Hope in 2 years time they'll look as good and will leave a legacy of shady fauna food forests. I try to leave the trees alone but I do go and talk to them 😀.

I've been staying up late thinking about just what you've talked about in this video Beau. The nature of life, and of death. The nature of doing something for life that you'll never know or understand. Feels real great to hear you put it into words and get a glimpse into another human's life and thoughts about it when he's willing to share them. Thanks for a really meaningful film.

Your new forest is looking fantastic two years on. It has always amazed me when I've gone back to planting jobs many years later, it's amazing how fast a bare paddock can be transformed back into a full on rainforest in only around five to ten years. Mother nature is amazing, and it takes people just like you to actually make a difference for the betterment of the planet. Thank you from the trees 💚🌲🌴👍

As a relatively new viewer watching your channel, stumbling across the Bad River episode while contemplating finalising an assignment in the early hours one morning, I’ve utterly enjoyed flipping through the earlier episodes and latest ones as I do my Robert G Barrett novels. I still haven’t completed the Beau series, waiting for the time between well kids, work and general stuff and things and wanted to thank you for the viewing pleasure and being an insightful person and as the kids say that bloke is a lot like you dad, sometimes he has a beard sometimes not loves the outdoors and wears shirts from the op shop that no one else wants. Thanks mate look forward to the next Beau adventure and have a Merry Christmas 🎅🏼
