A very informative and useful video Mr Brown. I've got a MB146 where a tarnished barrel needs replacing. The local dealer wanted a fortune to do the job. I'm practical enough to give this a go thanks to your clear instructions. Now have to look for both a barrel and a dis-assembly tool.
sbrebrown Steven, this is what makes the Internet (and TH-cam) so wonderful. Enthusiasts and experts providing extremely useful information and instruction to the world that circumvents the monopoly, "knowledge is power" syndrome and pricing of greedy manufacturers and distributors.
Thank you SO much. I was looking for somewhere to take my pen in for repair when I came across this. Following your instructions I've managed it myself and my beautiful pen is back in use. hurrah.
Wow! Great. Actually... I was able to simply unscrew the nib/feed-section by hand quite easily... Without having to apply a lot of pressure... I didn't have the stomach to pull out the nib, but havinf seen this, I'm willing to try. Hopefully I'll be able to stay away from the worls of pain! :)) Tnx, Mr. Brown!!
No. Never! :) I am never going to touch my MBs :-) Although I must admit that sooner or later I will have to change the nib of the 149 because a bit of tiping material is missing and it is a tiny bit scratchy. Just a tiny bit, but enough to piss me off. But at the end perhaps I'll let MB to do that even though I'm aware of the costs... Great video, there are not many (or maybe none) on TH-cam about disassembling the MBs which makes it very special. Good job!
+levi siccard Yes, if the grease dissolves, the seal will become less effective and you can get leakage. Alternatively, the piston seal itself can have deteriorated, but that is more common with vintage cork seals than with modern nylon seals, I think. So I would first try to add some grease to the piston seal. I always use silicon grease (don't use Vaseline, which is petroleum based), like this www.andersonpens.com/10-ml-Jar-of-Silicone-Grease-p/rs-silicone-lg.htm.
I know this is an old video but there are lots of 146/149's out there! I didn't have trouble removing my nib and feed but they don't want to go back into the holder. Any ideas?
Took apart a newly acquired early '80s 149, and "entered a world of pain". Precious resin DID crack (section). This pen still had the MB assembly sealer in place. Anyone got a lead on where I might find a replacement? I've checked Ebay & google, and apparently I've managed to break the most unobtainium part of the pen. To make matters worse, the sections don't interchange along the model chronology. I don't know what MB would charge to fix the pen, but I have a felling it could be more than what I paid for it. SUCKS that MB won't sell parts to owners...
Have you ever explored inside a Mont Blanc classic twist ballpoint? Mine broke a piece of plastic when I tried to replace the ink cartridge and now the old cartridge is stuck, the twist doesn’t twist and I’m extremely sad.
Hello sbrebrown, thank you for the great instruction videos. Could you direct me where to buy these montblanc disassembly tools? Could you give me a direct link?
Thanks for the useful video. Recently I bought a second hand MB 146 but does not pick up ink can you please tell me where the problem is? Thank you soo much.
I currently can't locate the 146 disassembly tool on eBay, but will keep looking. A (very kind) friend is all but giving me his 146 this afternoon. Really looking forward to it. : )
sbrebrown I'm soaking the nib and ink chamber in distilled water now, Stephen. I believe it's been sitting with dried ink inside for nearly 20 years. Would you recommend flushing it with diluted ammonia or only distilled water?
Stephen, I don't have the MB warranty booklet so I am interest in taking my MB 149 apart. The piston suction is rather weak and it has a small leak I believe. Could you give me a direct link to where you have purchase this Chinese made tools to open it up? Thanks.
Do you have any experience (or know of anyone) repairing a Montblanc mechanical pencil? I have a Virginia Woolf edition mechanical pencil, and the shaft has come dislodged from the resin barrel. It looks like it stays in place by pressure with a knurled end that presumably fits into the resin barrel.
I tried eBay, Amazon and other sources for a Mont Blanc 149 fountain pen nib removal tool such as the type you used. Can you give me a source? Thank you very much.
lutha blisset Montblanc does not sell replacement parts to individuals, so your best bet it to send in the pen for repair, or try to find a spare part on eBay or penboard
probably more than patience. i founded the part on china ebay in brass and maybe in uk in plastic.... not sure if going with MB repair service or trying by my self.....
Hello Mr. Brown, I have a Montblanc 146 wich is leaking inkt at the top of the pen (not the nib side but the other side where the piston system is) since some days now. The pen is from 91 and I decided to take it apart. Everything seems okay but I noticed that there is no grease at all at the piston parts. everything behind the piston was very inky and thats how the ink got out trough the moving parts. (1 shirt ruined and some messy hands) 1. could this be the cause of the leaking? 2. What grease should i use best, any tips or an ebay link? PS.: thanks for all the usefull reviews and know how's. Got myself a small Jinhao collection recently and I like them very much!
OMG!!!!! I SOOOOOOOOO will NOT be doing this to my 146 90th anniversary rose gold Meisterstuk when I get it. Video on the way shortly ^,,^ No Haggis for me Doc !!! Katt ^,,^
Hi Mr. Brown, I have a MontBlanc Noblesse fountain pen and want to replace the nib. I have the replacement nib, could you possibly give me directions for replacement? Thanks, ron
A fantastic video on how to delicately handle a classic fountain pen 🖊️. Thank you very much.
Just what I needed on a Sunday afternoon. Now my 146 piston works smoothly with a wee bit of grease on it. Thanks!
Glad this was helpful!
Fixed my Mont Blanc having watched this. Thanks.
Really great video. Thank you. Shows how simple these pens really are.
Fantastic video. Simple, easily explained, concise. Loved it.
Yet another tremendously useful video. Easily the best video of this operation on TH-cam. Thank you very much.

Question: if the piston rod is broken, can a home repair guy replace the piston rod? wondering how deep is the "world of hurt?:"
Ultimate Video! A big thank you!!!
Excelente! O melhor vídeo de todos!

I just bought a vintage MB 149, I might be doing this to maintain it myself. Even though the guy I bought it from just had it serviced by MB
Fabulous video. I needed this one just today. Appreciate it.
You're very welcome!

sbrebrown Thank you very much, I indeed used some grease and my pen is working properly again.
Dankeschön, hat prima geklappt!
Thanks a lot, it worked fine!
best video EVER ... thanks for the explanation
You're welcome.
Thanks for the video! Doing this is about as appetising as... eating haggis! But great to know how to do it :-)
Excellent video! But...I don't think I'll be trying this too soon. :-)
Soo what can I do if my piston rod is broken? Do I need a new rod or is it part of the blind cap ? Do I need a new blind cap?
I know this is an old video but there are lots of 146/149's out there! I didn't have trouble removing my nib and feed but they don't want to go back into the holder. Any ideas?
Still wondering how to take apart my mont blanc Meisterstück 4810, 14k 585.

I have a Montblanc 145. Is there any difference in the assembly/disassembly?
Have you ever explored inside a Mont Blanc classic twist ballpoint? Mine broke a piece of plastic when I tried to replace the ink cartridge and now the old cartridge is stuck, the twist doesn’t twist and I’m extremely sad.

That will be fun to play with!
sbrebrown I'm soaking the nib and ink chamber in distilled water now, Stephen. I believe it's been sitting with dried ink inside for nearly 20 years. Would you recommend flushing it with diluted ammonia or only distilled water?
About 10% ammonia in 90% water should be fine.
sbrebrown Thanks Stephen!
Where you Scottish four years ago? lol
Thanks alot! As always, very useful video!
PS: I love Scotty too. :D

I would have a retailer send it to Montblanc. it will cost you something, but they'll fix it.
Thank you for this. Killed me with that accent though.
You sound very different in this video.
Regardless of that, good video!
I tried eBay, Amazon and other sources for a Mont Blanc 149 fountain pen nib removal tool such as the type you used. Can you give me a source? Thank you very much.
hfminmi I don't have a source, sorry.
What type of grease do you use for the piston?
Pure silicone grease.
Hi, I desperately need one of those tools. Can someone help me to find one for my 2017 MB149?
Try penboard.de
Thanks a lot! Will do!
