I am retired from two careers of primary school teaching when I was deputy head of a Middle School and Primary School, and as a self employed Chalkboard Artist from 2002 until I reached the grand old age of 65 in 2016. Since I retired it’s like a second childhood but with more expensive toys.

I play guitar and write songs and have written about 14 songs for the local BBC radio station. I run a weekly (weakly) evening Acoustic session at a local pub and have been doing so for 14 years now. I also started an afternoon acoustic session in a quite large cafe in Nuneaton. Both premises were former songwriting clients of mine.
Much of the music I use on this channel is taken from epidemicsound.com free to use on TH-cam for a reasonable monthly fee, and sometimes I suffer you with my own music.
Gear that I use:
DJI Mavic Mini Drone.
Iphone X for camera, generally front facing so I can see myself in frame. Super quality especially if I keep the lens clean.
Gimble is a Q2 Smooth by Zhiyun, I ought to use this more often because it was expensive.

Rhode videomicro mic with iPhone (if necessary in the wind)
Rhode videomic to do voice over on computer
Video editing with Final Cut Pro X
Polarduck Mini Tripod for mobile phone. This is so good and under £10.00 I bought two.
Lamcou bendy leg tripod
Tall Tripod is a Velbon CX 540
Mono pod is a Manfrotto Compact MMC3-02 and is very useful for getting high angles that look like low flight drone shots and so easy to carry on my bike along with the mini tripod.

Thanks for posting. I've learned a few new things from this :) I've always liked to do sign art and bordering for fun, but was never the best at the lettering; always had a hard time getting it to match up nicely. I like the way you do that though; starting thin and then thickening the letters out later. I've done it the opposite way; I draw out the letters thick and then fill them in and it never looks as nice. I'll definitely be trying it this way now.
Hi Hazel, No its not chalk. The pens really do offer a flexibility to do all sorts of work. they are not quite as precise as acrylic pens but so much quicker to use.

Hi John! I love your chalkboard art tutorials and videos, I’ve been watching a lot of them. I know it’s been a while since your last one, but could you demonstrate how to create a beer mug or an Oktoberfest sign?
John, How do you remove the Chalk from the boards? Can you just wipe them off or do you need a cleaner? Does it leave any residue? Great drawings by the way!

Thanks for your kind comments. It's good to get some youth on board. Hope you are keeping urban lettering legal! Actually some graffitti is top quality especially when it is in approved locations. BTW I like your bike - it looks like great fun - vague connection - I have a Suzuki van - but I don't do wheelies!

Too fine
I'm trying to get used to painting with Posterman pens. I'm finding them horrible at the moment. I'm used to an airbrush which is very delicate compared to the pens which seem brutal in comparison.

I buy my pens from BHMA.co.uk in UK. Put 'John Neal' for a discount. You have to look further afield for wider 'Biggie' pens still by Kuretake.
John Neal. Thank you John. I've practiced hand lettering since I was about 7 yrs old. I had stopped doing so about 10 years ago, and recently started again. This video here has "recharged" my imagination.

I thought you meant North South etc, but circles comes with practice and writing on blackboards as a teacher for 25 years. Thanks for your kind observation.

Not sure if you answered this already in previous posts, but what are you using on the board? appears to be chalk but not sure. Is the board an actual slate chalk board? Love your video. Not since Bob Ross Painting have I enjoyed watching art transform before my eyes, Thanks
+Dan Moberly Hi Dan, Thanks for your kind comments. The pens have acrylic ink in them and the surface is MDF painted black with smooth masonry paint.
I live in California where can I get those pens. Would really enjoy creating your kind of art
+Dan Moberly Just search Posca pens or Zig Posterman pens by Kuretake. I know they do sell them in USA. BTW my son and his wife have just moved to CA and now have a house in San Jose. He works in computers something to do with fruit!!

Ok... so no actual chalk at all. And all permanent signage? That is interesting. I have to do a chalkboard menu IN CHALK so it can be rubbed out another day. These pens look waaaaay better.
