Machines: Plasser India 08-32 Tamper, and DGS-62 PLS Dynamic Track Stabiliser.
Getting to see the highly complicated machinery that are used by Indian Railways for track maintenance was always on my to-do list, but that involved getting lucky since we have no idea exactlywhen and where these machines are used.
This footage is from when I got lucky to see these machines arrive at exactly the spot I was waiting to shoot trains, and the crew were kind enough to let me take photos and videos of the machines in operations.
This is how it works:
Powered by a 300+ hp engine, the 08-32 tamping machine gets to work by lifting the rails and packing ballast underneath to achieve a stable base in case there are issues with the rails sinking in a bit. Based on the configuration, these machines can lift two, three or four sleepers in one go.
Once the tamper is finished, the DGS 62 is fired up. It is primarily used to restore the resistance of the rails to lateral movement brought forth by passing trains. It is equipped with a vibrating unit that grips the rails and applies vertical loading combined with horizontal vibration to simulate thousands of tonnes of trains passing over it in a very short period of time. This helps the Railways avoid imposing speed restrictions until the rails have recovered their resistance while also creating an even more stable ballast base. One pass of this stabiliser is equivalent to 100,000 tons of train traffic, which is why it is very beneficial. The vibration generated by this machine is so high that I could feel the ground beneath my feet vibrating strongly when the machine passed by the camera.
As soon as these machines are done, they travel to the next station, and reverse on to the adjacent track to return to their base; rail traffic is resumed as soon as they clear the line, and most of the times no speed restrictions are imposed unless the tamping has been performed on a bridge. Stabilisers are not used on bridges as the huge amount of vibration generated can damage their foundations.

A great catch. Interesting to watch. Excellent video.
Dheeraj, Nice to see railfans doing something more than locos locos and locos
Highly appreciable railfanning
Hey thanks man i just saw that thing doing its thing in Lithuania, vilnius and i was thinking what the heck is it doing-now i know👍
Hey 👋 brother ..
Thanks 🙏🏼.. just saw this pass by at Vidyanagar’s railway station near OU Hyderabad
Awesome. I always wanted to see one of these in action!
RThen, perhaps, you may like a look at tamping like it is done today?

Super caption boss thanks for uploding.😙
Well documented.
Nice capture

Dude why are you asking me. Google the specifications and find out the information that you need.
Kam ho kaha rahi hai

Vibration need to start when all set but you start vibration before lifting unit set.and working speed is too fast. its not able to break properly when you tamping that's may be creat problem in your tamping unit.
Please contact South Western Railways, then. :)
@Dheeraj Rao
You may smile, - but he is partially right. I do assume you did edit the video and re-upload it - tamping come before stabilising in the video now, like it is in reality and it should be.
IMHO both are running quite fast - the stabilising unit too fast - IMHO.
It does not make sense to contact SWR. If they dont know how to use the machines correctly by now, nobody can teach them. I would like to believe Plasser did educate the operators as they would do here in Europe. But, on the other hand - this is India, so I´m not too sure about the educational factor here......
The 08-32 is a somewhat older, not to say outdated, piece of machinery and clearly not suited for a big network like IR has. But, needless to say, better to have this tiny critter than nothing..... ;)
Well, I have uploaded the videos exactly as they happened. And this was during a very short break between trains so maybe they were told to hurry up. Firstly recording these is frowned upon and I was lucky they let me do it. Whether they're doing it right or wrong, I cannot do anything about it. From the Railways' perspective I'm just a bystander who has no idea about these things.
Oh - I think I was irritated by the sentence "Vibration need to start when all set but you start vibration before lifting unit set", assuming the video was the other way around.
My post wasnt directed at you at all - me knows you cant do anything about it if the construction crew does things wrong.
You may be right with your assumption they had to speed up. In that case they better had not stabilized because stabilizing with the wrong sspeed may make the tings worse.... ;)
Would like to know why they had something against the filming? Maybe they knew they are doing not ok? I mean these tampers arent a secret in any way - everybody can buy such an old iron given he has the money for this bunch of scrap metal...... ;)
what are they doing
+kasi creations Kindly read the description
Timping lanig machin
Tamper units are used for straighten the track also same time adjusting the elevation of the track by lifting it if required..the tamping tools(up and down movement)rattles the ballast so it settles and tie base is firm...same time in the cab operator can keep an eye for elevation info in the equipment computer..
