- I used to really enjoy listening and indeed recording the BBC Radio 1 In Concert series on a Saturday evening during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. I still have the cassette tapes and as the BBC has no immediate plan to make these available to the public I have decided to release close to 250 of these historical recordings on my TH-cam channel.

Yeah, it's crazy how influential they've ended up being. Talk Talk as well. I think they just tapped into some deeply resonant well.

I was there!!! So bloody good to find it here. The finest gig I've ever attended. The audience so profoundly absorbed in each and every song. It is very difficult to describe such a soul filling experience; communal musical hypnosis. I will never forget this evening over thirty years ago! Thank you Blue Nile.

I was just listening to a podcast of some guys reviewing A Walk Across the Rooftops and they all seemed to agree that The Blue Nile seemed like they would be the worst perfomring band of all time. I had a hard time agreeing and glad to hear this proves them wrong.

I was at this concert - the fourth ever concert the Blue Nile did. Thirty years on this recording fills me with the emotions I had that night. Beautiful.
I was there too. I didn't know it was only their fourth gig ever! I went backstage and met them. And then we bumped into them later in The Hacienda.
Paul Buchanan's voice is just stunning, heartbreaking, emotive and fabulous. 👍

I caught this tour when they came to NYC. I was a young man on a motorcycle who rode in from the outer boros... parked downtown and walked into the venue with the others (a rarified few) who loved Blue Nile. When they began... to hear Walk Across the Rooftops as I'd heard it all those times before... alone, in my room with the emotions washing over me was almost too much to bear.
For all my affectations, all my leather jackets and motorcycles and pierced ears.. I was a lovelorn and melancholic youth more suited to books and solitary interests. And all I ever wanted was to share my love for such things and The Blue Nile with a woman of a particular beauty; a woman of intelligence and kind eyes. A woman with soft hands for kneading bread or playing a piano or painting a canvas. A woman who would understand why 40 years later... I can still feel tears welling in my eyes at the memory and the realization that I'd had her and lost her.
Okay, I think this is the concert I attended as a 21 year old. I shouted out EADGBE whilst Mr Buchanan was having a guitar tuning problem (only he chuckled - I was an idiot of course). The next day me and my late father (who introduced me to the Blue Nile) were painting the outside of a soon to be nightclub on Back Tib Street Manchester (the Sound Garden). Out of Sasha's hotel came the Blue Nile. I shouted EADGBE at them. They came over and we had a chat. Lovely people. Perhaps it was not this concert, but there's the anecdote. OH GOD, that's me shouting. don't be nervous. I was such a fool and there's my stupid EADGBE heckle. As a 54 year old, that's my only claim to fame. What a band. What a voice. Tinsel Town was played at my dad's funeral.

God, I remember it like it was yesterday. I saw them again at the Opera House a few years later and Paul said "I'm not tangling with any Manchester wits". You obviously made an impression.
I saw them a week after this was recorded, in Birmingham on the 20th September. It was the most extraordinary night of my life. Their surprise and humility at being adored was touching. At the end of the show, Paul said he was quite happy to play some more songs but they didn't know any, so they played Tinseltown again and got an even bigger ovation than they did the first time they played it.
If the Birmingham performance you attended was at the Symphony Hall then my wife and I also attended that show. Of all the concerts I have attended since 1968 I think that concert has to be in the top three that I have experienced. The sound quality and musicianship was fantastic.

I'm from Russia. Moreover, I'm only 21 y.o. But I wish I could be there, on that concert in Manchester. So, there's nothing I can do but listening this record in the night... and crying

I'm years late at nineteen years of age, but this music speaks to me like nothing else. There's something special about Paul Buchanan conveying so much emotion through the lyrics. And the synths! Wow.

That amazing list he recites 40 mins in at the end of Downtown Lights. It's even better than on the album. He's one of the great pop singers ever. The gratitude and love that audience show. Just beautiful.
I've been to literally hundreds of gigs and although they each had an individuality this gig had it all. Laughter, tears, love,astonishment. With my head phones on I'm 35 again on that very special night. The crowd were so with the band it's the likes I've never seen before. I think I cried more that night than when my sons were born. Truly lifechanging.

Paul's voice is a pure, heart worn miracle - it is as important a projection as Mark Hollis, Mark Eitzel and Jeff Buckley ; yup, that transformational in its pull and push and raw vulnerability. It has rarely been matched since...

I had no idea tne BBC were there. A part of my youth I thought I'd lost this forever. Thank you so much. RIP the best venue ever. The fact the band never new how appreciated they were, hundreds of people crying in ecstacy in the audience. The band shed many a tear too. An emotional evening.
Carlo Manson I was there too - so much love and so many tears. What an experience it was.

Saw The Blue Nile twice live! Once in London (on this '90 tour) and again in Brussels a few years later! Fantastic shows, wonderful memories. I've been touting Paul B's virtues for years to anyone who will listen!

Not ever hearing of the Blue Nile before I remember that my late husband and I read a review of their (sold out of course) concert at the Fillmore in San Francisco in 1990 and the reviewer was so blissed out from attending that we went out and bought that first album and subsequently everything Blue Nile.

At the end of this gig my mate 'borrowed' Paul's bottle of water he'd left at the edge of the stage and he kept it under his bed for years. It grew some weird stuff inside that I imagine we could have cloned him from.

I’m sitting here in the sun with my favourite person in the world beside me Lydia listening to the blue Nile fair trade gig and Glastonbury over the hillside and I’m remembering my mam and dad and there last years and moments but I’m calm in my soul love is all the blue Nile
This is the only official live recording on YT and its glorious! One my all time favourite groups -such a special group!! Great show and priceless recording now!

Was fortunate enough to see them live 3 times and they were always received rapturously. You'd have this intense soulful melancholic music then Paul Buchanan being self deprecating and frequently very funny in-between the songs. It just made me love them even more.
I was at the Dublin show and although it’s 30 years ago and I’ve been to many gigs since, it’s the best one I’ve been to, hope you don’t me sharing my (long) gig review here.
Wasn’t that familiar with them beforehand, my only real knowledge was from a review of A Walk Across The Rooftops in an archive copy of Hi-Fi News And Record Review magazine at the local library in the mid 80s. The reviewer raved about it and although his words stuck in my mind, I never bought the album.
Fast forward to September 1990 and posters went up around Eden Quay advertising their gig at The Gaiety Theatre. I’d no idea they were on tour or that it was a rare event, or even that they had recorded a second album. Up-and-coming Irish singer Brian Kennedy was billed the support act and so I got a ticket just to see him, such a late decision that I only managed to get a seat high in the Dress Circle.
Arriving at the gig, a poster in the reception said that both Brian Kennedy and Shawn Colvin were scheduled to appear as support. However, Colvin cancelled on the night and was replaced by Breton singer Katell Keineg.
The Blue Nile’s entrance was something I will always remember. Various bandmembers shuffled out into the dim light to a three-minute standing ovation from the audience, something I’ve not seen before or since at a gig. So I thought there was something special here. The band looked at each other, as if to say “All this, just for us?” They seemed a bit embarrassed. What I came to realise is they’d gathered an underground following that waited for years to hear them actually play live. Without seeing their videos on TV or much coverage in magazines etc I think it might have been the first time many of the audience had seen the band members at all.
Setlist ran Rooftops/Tinseltown/Over The Hillside/Downtown Lights, I think. The atmosphere was amazing - the audience was deafening between songs, but sat in absolute silence during them, as if they were mesmerised. Surreal.
A woman in the stalls shouted “Are you gonna play Easter Parade?” to which Paul smiled and said “Yes!”. Another voice shouted “You’re the best thing to come out of Scotland since The Bay City Rollers”. Paul lifted up his trouser leg and replied “We WERE The Bay City Rollers!” Someone else noticed the similarity between Paul and guest guitarist Jon Herington (later of Steely Dan) and asked “Is that your brother?”, to which Paul replied with a surprised “No!”.
The show ended, Paul announced to the audience “We’ve run out of songs we know” so I think they played Tinseltown again for an encore.

I was at that gig in the Gaiety, At 18. I may of been one of the youngest there, Got a couple of nice photos from the night. The Nile we're on top form. I'll always remember the woman beside me in floods of tears as Paul sang. Many years later Paul played the Electric Picnic and we got chatting, a friend of mine told him that I was soon to be married and that we had chosen their song Saturday Night as the song for the first song. He offered to play it ad the wedding. I was floored, never before have I encountered such warmth and kindness. I explained we were getting married far from Ireland. He chuckled and said "You're on your own so!". When they played Vicar Street a while later, they dedicated the Saturday Night to us. A lovely man Mr Buchanan.

Youre a man after my own heart...I too had a cassette recording of this gig, which I was actually at...and lost it. I will forever remember two things from the gig ...first the shock when they played the opening song, because of just how incredible they sounded..beyond anyones wildest dreams.. there was an audible gasp around me. And secondly...the end of the gig, when grow men were openly weeping with joy at what we had all just experienced ... the best live perormance ive ever witnessed in 40 years of going to gigs. Listen to the ovation at the end of Tinseltown...it just went on..and on... and on.The only way the band could get the audience to stop applauding and cheering was to start the next song in the set.

Do you remember how nervous they were at the start? And someone shouted ‘it’s alright we love you’ and then they played the best set I’ve ever heard. I’ve never been anywhere where there was that much love. What a magical experience it was.

@@Anderzander I remember that yes !! Someone shouted ' dont be nervous' !! And buchanan looked up and said ' dont be nervous ??? Youre joking arent you ?? Weve got state registered nurses waiting in the wings !!' Cue laughter and cheering and from then on it was like kids playing to proud parents at a school concert...the will for them to succeed and play well was so tangible you could touch it. Not that w needed to worry....we witnessed actual genius that night
Everytime I feel emotion and I’m thinking to much I listen to the blue Nile , each word sang hits a feeling in me I honestly listen to this band honestly maybe every third day …never ever tiring of the sentiment in music and voice magnificent I will want one of there songs played at my final day

This live show sounds just as good as their studio material, which is to say it sounds really good. I wish they had more recognition, or any recognition at all in North America.

I was privileged to see the homecoming Glasgow gig on this tour. Similar to the astonishing reception at other venues set out in the comments here, but perhaps magnified by it being their home city, they walked out to a standing ovation which seemed to last forever. Paul, humble as ever, spoke into the mic and said something along the lines of, "What if we're rubbish?" An incredible night ensued and this recording brings it all back.
The only time I've been more emotional at a gig was one of their later tours when they performed the sublime 'Family Life'.
So enjoyed this trip down memory lane to my 20 something self! Superb quality recording!❤

What can i say? Its too emotional, i dont understand good the lenguaje but with this kind to use the voice mixing with chords that the pop dont use never more i dont need to know english. With this music i cant find where is the soul in the body. Thanks for this upload, make me so happy-sad today
Thanks Phil. I love this band. I was born in 1979 so missed The Blue Nile when they first came out. My eldest brother was a big fan and had their first record 'A Walk Across the Rooftops'. I remember him playing 'Heatwave' back in the 1980's. I was just a little boy but its feel, sound and passion made a deep impression on me. As I got older I searched out records by The Blue Nile having that memory of 'Heatwave'. By that point I was a big fan of Peter Gabriel, it must be the mid 1990s' by then. After hearing The Blue Nile my first thought was that they must be fans themselves as there is a distinct similarity in the sound production, musical style and vocals. To my ignorance, I heard Gabriel in an interview saying how much he loved this band and that he bought hundreds of copiers that he would give out to friends, family and fellow musicians. He stated that The Blue Niles 'Walk Across The Rooftops' would go on to influence his next album 'So' which was the biggest selling album of the 1980's in Europe and the US. I was there. I remember not liking the mix but the performance was incredible. This recording is sublime.
I was there that night. There's a bit that was edited out. They're tuning their guitars. Some wag shouts out 'EADGBE'. Another says "take your time", followed by "You did over your last album" (the five year gap between albums was considered excessive at the time).
It wasn't in any way critical. The audience was enraptured by what they were hearing. It was a magical gig and Manchester took the band from the other rainy city to their hearts.
I was an ardent fan.. I have two gigs I regret profoundly at missing - This one and Talking Heads at Ingilston

I was at this concert....the sound was like no other gig I have ever known, like being sat in front of a very good hi-fi. And yes, they ran out of things to play so they played 'Tinseltown' again. A hugely special experience.

I saw David Bowie in 1973 with Reg. 25 shillings ( 1 pound 25 )... we played ther in 1984 with the Chameleons. I was at this gig. What a great band. Underground but fabulous and unique! David Fielding and Ooshka.xx

I was championing this band in the 1980s to all that would listen, and unknown to me a friend of mine secretly wrote to them and told them this. I then unexpectedly received two postcards from them, which I still treasure. Thank you, The Blue Nile, for being there through the hardest times I was going through back then. Thank you.
(And the songs still make me cry tears of sadness and happiness at the same time.)😅

For Me Paul Buchanan is the modern Frank Sinatra... What a Voice! Followed Blue Nile since the release of their debut album "A Walk Across The Rooftops" (0n Vinyl) 1984. LINN The Audio Specialists used to use the Album as a Reference when listening to their Top Of The Range Hi-Fidelity Equipment. Blue Nile Light Years ahead of their time!. Love Their Music.❤
