  • Rodent control is 50% baiting and trapping and 50% "exclusion". In this video, Master Technician, Cardon Ellis, teaches the viewer how to seal rats OUT of their homes in a process called "exclusion."

    ⛔️ You just said Mice 1/4”, Rats 1/2” warning ⚠️ then proceeded to say “USE 1/4” Galvanized”. Which would allow Mice ! Why not just go 1/8” and be done ?

    I used cement to block a hole and of mixed broken glass in it... This held fine for some 12 years but now have same rat hole being used again... 2 things... Shows the persistence of the rodent, and 2nd the need for galvanized wire as shown... So I'm about to repeat this blockage using galvanized meshes as shown... Thom in Scotland.

      1/2in hardware cloth is usually made out of a heavier gauge then the 1/4in variety and the individual wires would be overall more durable. 😊🌎✨

    This is a great video! There's only one thing I'd add to this... We have seen where rats can and will chew through the 1/4" wire mesh. In this instance, we would install 1/4" inch to keep out mice and 1/2" (it's stronger) to keep out rats as well as larger animals. We would also cut away the insulation where it intersects the screen caulk around the utility to assure that mice cannot get around the mesh by chewing through the A/C insulation. Here's an example of how we'd do a deck exclusion with both 1/4" inch and 1/2" inch mesh: th-cam.com/video/7ax3L3uOUeU/w-d-xo.html
    Also, this is VERY important! You are going to want to wear gloves when handling the wire mesh and cutting it (with snips), it will pierce your skin and fingers easily!

    I'm probably the ONLY person here watching this to figure out how to keep a rat IN. Last year, I was killing the little things in a trap.
    This year, someone gave my kid 2 pet rats as gift and she is emotionally attached. (Secretly) they creep me out. She has cancer and they make her so happy, so here I am trying to figure out how to keep them from escaping the cage.
    For good reason, there are no videos on how to keep a rat IN. So here I am using your lesson in reverse. Lol

    Okay sounds good - Galvanized hardware cloth (chicken wire) great ! Any particular gauge - since the master technician/ narrator failed to include this crucial detail - I'll assume the chicken wire should be a thick gauge - as rats attempt to gnaw/ bite through the wiring it will probably cause extreme pain due the sharp pointy ends created kinda' like coarse steel wool mesh wire tips, ouch !

    What about spray foam before putting the gavalnized cloth on? I have tried steel wool with the expanding foam they got through. I have tried copper mesh, they got through. I tried caulking they got through. Now, I'm trying this to keep the mice out.

    • @kendalgee5808
      @kendalgee5808 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spray foam is not for outdoors. Otherwise roofers would you spray foam on your roof. I would imagine spray foam will crack in the sun and only used for areas not exposed to the elements. I am using fix it all which turns into a concrete substance to patch a outdoor hole with steel wool type 3. I would assume galvanized cloth you can use some sort of stainless steel screw and use a wall anchor. That way when it rains your screw will not rust and using a wall anchor is the right way to go.

      @@kendalgee5808 I'm talking about inside sealing mouse holes.

    • @kendalgee5808
      @kendalgee5808 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tracy4788 I'm surprised he uses foam for the inside. To me it looks really sloppy. I guess that will work indoors, foam, and then put the mesh grading over it, and then foam. Fix it all is a real hassle to mix with water in a tray, and then apply it and put mesh grading over it or a steel wool type three. Because it dries out quickly, turns to concrete, and you have to hold it out of the tray. I suppose foam indoors would be the most practical and easiest method. But then you might have to worry about silver fish eating it perhaps. I just solve my silverfish problem in my bathroom do you have to seal up the cracks.

    • @kendalgee5808
      @kendalgee5808 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say if you want a final solution. Get a hot glue gun, glue the mesh grading onto the surface, prepare some fix it all ( in a tray with spatula / must know how to mix its tricky / will cure rock hard quickly, rinse tray outside with hose when done quickly ) Spread a 1 inch layer of fix it all over the mesh. If you want you can put two layers of mesh. And if you really want to be sure use type of 3 steel wool. There is no way they are going to chew through that especially because it will hurt their teeth.
