@@robertmartinjr.4537 And, I dare you to read pioneer reports of the California, and even the Great Plains, Grizzly bears; those animals were approaching prehistoric sizes!
@derekbates4316 I remember in the 1800's a Spanish rancher killed this monster of a Grizzly Bear .I can't remember the weight or height but according to reports it was enormous.
Your info is very accurate. However, the only thing I could criticise you on is downplaying the size of Arctodus simus as I think that most estimates have the biggest ever individuals at around 1000 kg (or slightly under that).
No, the info is flawed As usual, errors. - The Atlas bear isn't a species, it's a brown bear subspecies, and therefore the species is extant. - Ursus maritimus tyrannus is a) (presented as) a subspecies, it's species is extant and shouldn't be listed b) is NOT a valid taxon. It is widely dismissed as misidentification. It is NOT recognised as a polar bear subspecies
The Kodiak Bear 🐻, The Ussuri, The Kamchatka Brown Bear are the largest bears alive today. Even rivaling the more larger Polar bear 🐻❄️ in size sometimes!
This is a good video; informative and interesting. I think it would be improved, though, if it included the size and weight statistics of living bears (for example the black bear. the brown/grizzly bear and the kodiak bear) for comparisons sake. it’s hard to visualise the size of these extinct bear species from length and weight statistics alone, without context.
@@Dr.Ian-Plect I specified exactly “brown/grizzly bear”. The term “grizzly bear” is more common in North America; the term “brown bear” is more common in Europe. *Both* are colloquial names for animals of the species _Ursus arctos._ Far from being “useless,” they are the commonly recognized name for _A. arctos,_ as used in different parts of the world. A 3500 pound bear on average means a 4500 pound larger version since there would have had to be large versions of the bear that lived so if 11’ was average then 14’ 4500 lbs could have been possible!!!
The problem is that these estimates are long out of date and should not be considered. The largest specimens of Arctotherium angustidens may not weighed much more than 1,000 kg, and even if there had ever been a 3,500-pound bear in history, it would have been an absolute freak of nature, not an average. The highest estimate of 4,502 pounds makes it bigger than an average sized Allosaurus, and I know a 2 ton bear sounds absolutely awesome and crazy, but it's just too unrealistic. In fact, to date, the Arctodus Simus is probably considered the larger of the short-faced bears.
