    I have drooled and dreamed of a timber frame home for decades. I will never be able to afford one. I do love to see the craftsmanship and skill needed to produce what is essentially a huge piece of furniture. Thank you, Gaius and crew.

    Love the prefabricated process using mortise and tendon, almost no nails. Very impressive. And the use of caliche as a finish reminds me of the native American construction in the southwest usa. Caliche makes great bricks when mixed with straw, and was then overcoat with a clay mix to prevent wind rain erosion of the brick through water absorption through the exposed straw in the blocks. Very cool to see another use

    I watched Ted Benson help the TOH crew raise a timber frame about a decade ago. I also watched Kris Harbor raise his timber frame barn in Wales. I can't get enough of this.

    We're planning on building a timber frame here in Tennessee. We found some walnut timbers online but I'm wondering if it's a good choice? Thanks so much for the informative videos!

      Use it for accent wood

    • @ShelterInstitute
      @ShelterInstitute  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Mary is incredible!
      Structurally speaking, black walnut is a great choice for timber framing. It has excellent strength characteristics-being both stronger and stiffer than red oak, though not quite as stiff as Douglas fir, which remains the standout choice. Due to its cost and scarcity in long and large sizes, black walnut is typically used as an accent wood in timber framing, particularly for elements like wind braces. As a very hard wood, it can be difficult to work by hand, so be sure to keep your chisels and slick sharp!

    Very nice design and work. I like how you integrated the two king truss elements into the bents. Waiting for the hammers!!!!
    But I gotta to know.... those posts look like ten inch by ten inch posts. Is that what they really are? Often, you guys use 8x8.

    • @ShelterInstitute
      @ShelterInstitute  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I already see the insulated panels to enclose the frame. Do you have any thoughts on using Larsen trusses as an alternative to SIPs?

    • @ShelterInstitute
      @ShelterInstitute  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You absolutely could use Larsen trusses as an alternative! The detailing would be different.

    what happens if you attempt to timber frame with hard woods?

    • @ShelterInstitute
      @ShelterInstitute  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      While hardwoods can be used, they tend to be less stable than softwoods and are more prone to checking. They are also generally more expensive and more difficult to cut.

    Are course attendees (students paying for course) providing free labor/design work for the customer paying for the house?

    • @ShelterInstitute
      @ShelterInstitute  29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      They are not! Shelter Courses is our school that teaches timber framing and building sciences. Shelter Design Build is our design build firm with in house designers, engineers and a full timber framing crew. Both companies are under the Shelter Institute umbrella. We have a video discussing our company history on our channel to learn more!
