I have drooled and dreamed of a timber frame home for decades. I will never be able to afford one. I do love to see the craftsmanship and skill needed to produce what is essentially a huge piece of furniture. Thank you, Gaius and crew.
Love the prefabricated process using mortise and tendon, almost no nails. Very impressive. And the use of caliche as a finish reminds me of the native American construction in the southwest usa. Caliche makes great bricks when mixed with straw, and was then overcoat with a clay mix to prevent wind rain erosion of the brick through water absorption through the exposed straw in the blocks. Very cool to see another use
I watched Ted Benson help the TOH crew raise a timber frame about a decade ago. I also watched Kris Harbor raise his timber frame barn in Wales. I can't get enough of this.
I love this king post design! And Mary is a gem! We're planning on building a timber frame here in Tennessee. We found some walnut timbers online but I'm wondering if it's a good choice? Thanks so much for the informative videos!
Mary is incredible! Structurally speaking, black walnut is a great choice for timber framing. It has excellent strength characteristics-being both stronger and stiffer than red oak, though not quite as stiff as Douglas fir, which remains the standout choice. Due to its cost and scarcity in long and large sizes, black walnut is typically used as an accent wood in timber framing, particularly for elements like wind braces. As a very hard wood, it can be difficult to work by hand, so be sure to keep your chisels and slick sharp!
Very nice design and work. I like how you integrated the two king truss elements into the bents. Waiting for the hammers!!!! But I gotta to know.... those posts look like ten inch by ten inch posts. Is that what they really are? Often, you guys use 8x8.
I’m not sure if I missed it or not but do you guys do continuous blocking beneath your bents columns/post down to the sill? Love your guys content keep up the good work!
While hardwoods can be used, they tend to be less stable than softwoods and are more prone to checking. They are also generally more expensive and more difficult to cut.
Check out our website for pricing on a few different size option! For custom projects like this one the price range can vary quite a bit based on the design
They are not! Shelter Courses is our school that teaches timber framing and building sciences. Shelter Design Build is our design build firm with in house designers, engineers and a full timber framing crew. Both companies are under the Shelter Institute umbrella. We have a video discussing our company history on our channel to learn more!
Looks great, love timber frames. Your vids gave good exposure to them. How much does the project cost as just a closed envelope no utilities/amenities and with a prebuilt foundation? Thanks in advance.
Thank you!! It really varies quite a bit from project to project. You can check out our website for some pricing examples on a couple different size options!

Use it for accent wood

"My wife's on TH-cam... Don't do that" 😂😂😂
Love to do one of your courses
We hope to meet you someday in one!

Thank you, the hammer beam episode is killer! Great eye, all of the exterior posts are 8x10!

You did not miss it, we just did not include it in this video. We do install continuous blocking under very post!
I already see the insulated panels to enclose the frame. Do you have any thoughts on using Larsen trusses as an alternative to SIPs?
You absolutely could use Larsen trusses as an alternative! The detailing would be different.
what happens if you attempt to timber frame with hard woods?
While hardwoods can be used, they tend to be less stable than softwoods and are more prone to checking. They are also generally more expensive and more difficult to cut.
@ thanks for responding, happy holidays
Does Zach also play as a QB for the Bills?
In his spare time, yes
❤️😍👍🙏👏🔥💕
Thank you Mary!!!
Should the wood be that *cracked* ? Look @19:42 that crack runs 1/2 the length of the wood
Awesome work! What program does the design team use to create your plans?
Thank you! We use Vectorworks!
Are your pegs drawbored?
We generally only draw bore very specific joinery. We explain why in this video!
Do you build in Texas?
We have not be we absolutely would! Feel free to reach out to clayton@shelterinstitute.com for more info on our process, pricing and lead times!
Can you guys give an idea of the costs involved in this process?
Thanks.

Are course attendees (students paying for course) providing free labor/design work for the customer paying for the house?

It doesn’t seem like the joists and rim boards would support that timber frame structure.
I’m sure they go back and add blocks below the subfloor under those point loads to transfer directly to the sill plate & foundation
Exactly! 👆We did not include that in the video, apologies!
I had the same question. Thanks for clarifying SI!
💚🤍❤💯💯💯💚🤍❤
Gaius is on island time! Always chill. Hawaiian style! 😊
Is this earthquake resistant?
I swear to you guys. Either the end of 2025 or 2026. I’m coming to learn!
We can’t wait to meet you!
