Listening to the master speak like this (his relaxed, composed, assured demeanor), it's an insight into his psyche when he's behind the drums. It makes total sense that he's so sought after - he just oozes class, confidence, and taste, both on and off the kit. And a gentleman to boot, not an ounce of arrogance or egotism. He's a gift to the entire drumming community. ❤

Love Steve Gadd. The man has zero ego and is almost self-deprecating about his incredible abilities. He is always so humble and looks uncomfortable with praise. While many drummers are quick to tell us their ability is a 'gift' (as I'm sure it is), Steve is always quick to credit other people and outside influences in shaping his phenomenal musicianship. He is always open and sincere in trying to explain his playing. I've been to clinics where he even shows you note for note his approach and technique, always trying to simplify and demystify in order to explain. But the truth is his genius and creativity cannot be explained..but I really appreciate the way he always tries.
I'm not a drummer, but I find these great musicians have a common wisdom to share. They all seem to say the following: 1 Work at your craft, 2. LISTEN all the time, 3. play what is approprate to the moment, 4. play with the best you can, and the rest takes care of itself. That is what being a musician is about. I like Dom's enthusiasm and passion for the subject.
I'm a huge Vinnie/Weckl fan, but I always felt he buried those guys (with half the notes!) at the end of the Buddy Rich Tribute concert. A musical monster.
What a cool, warm, humble person, in addition to being a beloved master musician.

I met Steve in 1997 when I was a Starbucks barista in Saugus, MA. He & a friend (a regular at our store) were getting their caffeine for a road trip. They ordered A LOT of 20 oz. espresso drinks (at least 12) and Steve was the nicest guy ever. I went full fangirl, lol. After he left, all my coworkers were like "Steve who?".
LOL😂 Great story - Unless you’re MAYBE the biggest of the big in jazz, 99.99% of the public has no clue who you are. Most don’t even know who Chick Corea was. But, they sure know who Snoop is. SAD.
@@americanedokko2782 It's true. But, that said, these guys deserve to reap the benefits that their mastery of their instruments bring without having to bear the pressures and unpleasantness of fame. And most of them are so humble, they'd probably opt to be granted that than all the fame in the world. NOT that I disagree with the premise of your point. The good thing is that those of us who truly know good music get to have these guys all to ourselves 😊

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Gadd at Yoshi’s Oakland after his band played and his attention to me and kindness caught me off guard. Not that he ever he gave me the impression he would be a jerk, I just didn’t expect him to be THAT kind, and THAT humble. And the show was amazing too! Since that show I don’t hit my crashes the same way anymore.
What a gift to the world Steve Gadd is . I was fortunate enough to meet him on his Workshop Tour , he signed my Session Hi hat , he was gracious to me and my Drummer buddy . Then when i found out that he was in james taylor tour band coming to Pine Knob i took my Gadd Gang cd Cover and got so lucky to convince his Tech to walk up to the edge of the stage and asking him if he could have Steve sign it , he came back after 10 minutes and gave it back to me signed !!! And to hit it out of the ballpark , when Steve and Luis Conte started waking out before the band to do a drum/percussion thing , Steve Saluted me , what that tells me is that he is so down to earth and humble and gracious to ask the Tech where i was sitting . and to finish my comment with one of Steve Gadd's favorite sentences (in my opinion) He REALLY makes you feel "We are all in this together . Thanks for your story. It's a great memory. Had the chance to meet Mr. Gadd on the Zildjian tour he did a number of years ago. Great clinic for sure. But the most impressive part to me was watching Steve interact as people filed past to get photos and autographs. He couldn't have been more warm and gracious with everyone. Never rushed. Looked you in the I and thanked you for being there. Including my brother and I. My brother Rob is the drummer in our family. Through him I am a huge drum fan as well. And when a special needs kid (and Gadd fan) came through with his parents behind us, Mr. Gadd took even more time to make him feel welcome. He just took a minute or two extra with this fan but it spoke volumes. By the way Eric... I rode by bike (before I had a drivers license) for an hour to the Knob on more than one occasion in the 70's to buy tickets. Grew up in Waterford. Good times. Cheers.

Dom mentioned Sinatra’s “LA Is My Lady” from the record QJ produced. Gadd’s playing on that just rules, particularly the title track. The way you can hear how he’s just driving that big band is just awesome. There’s great drummers on that record, and then there’s Steve, and Steve sticks out in such a cool way.

I met Mr. Gadd when I was a police officer assigned to backstage security during a corporate gig in south Florida in 2001 where he played with Paul Simon.
Gadd’s son was there as well, and he heard me talking to my partner about how excited I was to see Gadd in person and was even more excited to see him play from our vantage point.
Next thing I knew, Gadd’s son brought him over to me and introduced me to him. I was able to shake his hand and talk with him very briefly. He was so nice and was very humble (almost shy). It was almost like he couldn’t understand how someone could be so excited to meet him. As a lifelong drummer myself (and a very bad one), it’s a thrill I’ll never forget. He was absolutely on fire that night!

My favorite drummer of all time. His passion and love for the instrument, and respect for the music has always been impressive. Seems humble, too.
I'm not so fond of his style or playing, but he makes a lot of sense when he talks (more so than that very typically american and over enthusiastic interviewer). And yes, he's humble.

Went to grammar and high school with Steve; he's always been an all-around nice guy and willing to share what he knows. I remember watching him play with the Mangione Brothers and many other jazz luminaries of the time, at various jazz clubs in Rochester, NY. I didn't know anything about drumming at the time, but watching Steve got me interested and it has turned into a lifelong interest.
Steve's superb musical taste and instincts were obvious even at that young age, and his solos - OMG! They were pure pyrotechnics with superb percussive technique and were always an extension of the music he had been playing with the group. Lucky to have known him and we're all lucky to have lived when he was playing.

Indeed, it’s not only to be talented but it’s also hard work and sacrifice when not being home for your family when you work. There’s a quote from Steve that I thought I spotted on the Yamaha Musical Instruments website where Steve says: “Do what you love. If your career happens, that’s great. But I didn’t do this to make my career happen. I did it because I loved it”. That’s positive energy, a positive vibe, a positive approach to contribute to music. Steve Gadd is music and I have so much respect for him in how he made his life happen and of course his skills as a drummer/musician.
The Leprechaun by Chick Corea was the album that made us drummers at the time study and practice 12 hrs a day for years. Gadd pulled it out of the hat Abracadabra !!!!!

Dom is not only a great drummer, he shows what a great interviewer he is. Knowing all of these great drummers helps, but he knows what to ask and knows how to get the answers. What a great job, Professor. And Mr. Gadd, sir, you are tremendous and thank you for the great music and the inspiration and for raising the bar so high that only a few humans are in that stratosphere.
He makes everything look so easy but he earns it because of his work ethic (not to mention raw talent and love for his craft).
Gadd is comfortable with many genres. His versatility and talent is stellar.

My favorite drummer. I've seen so many of his interviews, been to a clinic, got to meet him and all of that. I feel like he is constantly wondering why people are so in awe of his abilities. His answers are always so simple "I just listen" and "I like rhythm", etc. He makes me try to be a musician instead of a drummer. I listen, I guess I just don't hear what he does.

Jeff Porcaro, spoke of this man drumming, as one of the legendary drummers of his time, boy what an understatement. I can only image what was not done by Jeff. Jeff said in one of his interview, "when I do something original I will tell you" I have stolen from other who I liked what they did. Thank You and Steve Gadd for doing this. Big smile.

I still remember when I discovered Mr. Gadd - it was an opening track on Urbaniak’s Fusion 3 album - and one did not have to be a drummer to appreciate this musician’s genius. And it was 1975!

Maybe you remember my student who was 6 at the time and had a blue Mohawk. He’s still rocking out and has worked through several of your books. This is a great interview. As I mentioned elsewhere, Steve is one of a kind. As a fellow Rochesterian and fellow ESM grad it was 20 years after I got out of college before I got a chance to meet him and play with him on 2 gigs. It was an honor and a great memory. Thought it would be tough for me to hang with but he made it easy. That flow! He was so humble and personable and grooved like nothing else.
omg,.I finally get to hear the man speak in words. Just as relaxed and natural as his music. I could go on a long time but what else can be said about Steve. I went to near every STUFF show in N.Y. Digested every word he said in Modern Drummer over the years. I worked for years on some of his little written out beats in MD. Injuries ended my drum playing but it is so rewarding to see Steve Gadd still going as he does. Hi Myno. I will spin this interview with Steve many times. What a great job done here Dom. Mikell's on West 110th n 9th Ave in 1975&76 had Steve, Gordon Edwards, Richard Tee, Eric Gale, Cornell Dupree for In House Band. Sid took me there n we threw down Johnny Walkers n rode The Way back down to The Village just rocking our heads All Night Long. Those guys were the tightest R&B evahh haha
The wisdom of Becker and Fagan got this fella in at the last minute. Did Aja in one take. What.
For some reason i teared up watching this and i know why.. This is one of the best musicians to ever set foot on this planet and in these crazy times with the music industry in decline, the quality, musicianship and humanity of Steve Gadd is a big reminder of what the possibilities are of creating new music if you really put your mind to something and work hard. Respect!

I like Steve's comment on listening to the other musicians! There's no more magical a situation than when everyone is interacting because they're hearing each other "in the moment". It makes you feel like you can play effortlessly.
That was fantastic. Steve is such a humble dude, you really can't get him to agree or go along with anything resembling self-congratulation, even though he's one of the legends who really deserve the praise. The Steve Gadd clinic I had the good fortune of attending explained so much about Steve's playing once I was able to see him, hear him. and watch him interact with other folks. His playing is him. That's sounds like an obvious, if not foregone conclusion, but it's a profound thing to be able to channel yourself into an instrument the way Steve can. And he really does dance behind the kit, that was another revelation. What Dom said about movement = his sounds is SPOT ON with Steve Gadd. I'll never forget it: Steve came out on stage, sat down behind his kit, and starting singing. His solo started with this blues ballad/cadence he was singing. He didn't even touch the drums for a couple of minutes. That knocked me out. It made a huge impression on why this man can play the way he can. There's this kind of purity of expression that's hard to describe. It's soulful, that is a fact. And very deep. On top of the deep, amazing opening solo, the dude was a humble and as real as it gets. No pretense, no big ego bullshit, zero condescension. He was so real, and helpful, and patient. Like I said, being able to see him and hear him (and meet him) in clinic gave me the insight into why nobody sounds like Steve.
These interviews are simply outstanding. So many great artists we’d otherwise never hear from. Yet their contributions to popular music are enormous. This is all so priceless and valuable. Bravo!

I first heard Steve Gadd when I was 7 or 8 years old on a record my father constantly played called " New York Connection; by Tom Scott.Have been a fan all my life from hearing him on Taxi on TV etc ,one of the most humble monsters on the planet.

The thing about Steve is he turns all your expectations of what it takes to be a star ON ITS HEAD because he's not all that stuff 99.9% of musicians strive to be - he's normal. He's not about all that busy-ness in the head that brings everyone down, literally scuttles their efforts. He doesn't delude himself or others with ulterior motives and plots, he's not an assuming guy that gets pulled here, there and everywhere, he's centered on just doing the damn thing. He's that best buddy everybody wants but just can't believe can exist. He's living proof that most of us are fakers who are afraid to just admit it and start ignoring our concocted fantasies that are 100% based in paranoia. Go out there and find out what's possible, don't sit in a closet and torment yourself, beat yourself down. Only YOU can be your own worst enemy. Steve's beyond and outside of that trap. Steve is honey badger to all that crap.
His work on the Di Meola albums is monumental.

What a wonderful interview with Steve Gadd. Dom is so giving in his comments which Steve richly deserves. Steve is testament to the fact that you don’t need to be egotistical to achieve greatness. Over and over again, Steve says ‘I love what I do’. That’s the key to being ‘ in the moment’.

Love the comment "you've got to practice". I believe people think once you reach a certain level you don't need to practice. I always feel like my abilities fade if I don't practice, never think I'm improving, but I do.

One of my inspirations of all times. Michel Petrucciani Trio - Live in Tokyo, with Mr. Gadd and Mr. Anthony Jackson still is one of my favorite albums of all times. Just mesmerizing. Years ago I had the opportunity to see him playing with Eric Clapton in Brazil, it was a dream come true.

Steve gadd is so right on the point about those who get ahead of themselves any drum teacher will tell you they have a difficult time keeping their students to stay in the moment you can tell they are daydreaming of leaving their mansion in the back of their limousine with their hot blonde wife arriving at a big stadium with cameras going off as they arrive playing a knock out gig and playing the drum solo to end all solo's yet forgetting they are at a drum lesson
