    Normally, this concerto brings that typical "crying man" sound out of the cello. For some reason, Shafran makes it sound like a...well, a desperate MADMAN. I think it pretty suits Schumann. Ironically, by making the concerto his own, maybe Shafran is realizing exactly what the composer intended.This thought is what made me come round to this version.

    • @sternernickwill
      @sternernickwill 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I think Shafran's meaning is truly authentic to Schumann's intention. This concerto is not meant to be played elegantly, as is unfortunately the norm; this work is completely manic, and demands a similar bi-polar expression from both soloist and the orchestra. The second movement is the one respite, as if Clara suddenly appears to soothe the madness.

    I’m not a cellist, but I do love all the cello concertos and the instrument. I’m also not a music expert, but one thing I always notice is when a cellist is in full control of each note, hand placement and wand. Which is why I love a lot Jackie’s performance… but this whole performance is on another level as you can clearly tell every finger, note and movement is deliberate to an accurate precision.. he doesn’t even look like his struggling, he just feeling the music and playing it as such.. amazing rendition 🤩🤩🤩

    It seems that the frantic pace of the last 3 minutes ( in spite of not at all "classical" or "romantic") is the correct way of playing it. Not only Shafran had the sense of rhythm to perceive the right pace to play, but also he had the extraordinary technical ability to do it. There are recordings in youtube of other famous players who play it too slowly and one gets the feeling that they are simply not capable of doing it faster.

    I did not know this shocking cellist, now fortunately yes. I believe that no one is able to offer an execution equal to this, above all being able to involve you in an overwhelming way, as it happened to me. Shafran is able to convey strong emotions to you and, in my opinion, I think he is also the only musician you cannot stop looking at for his extraordinary gestures which are part of the whole. He plays and literally tames what I consider the instrument closest to the human voice and among the largest and most important. Please see the gestures expressed by Shafran at minutes 1': 33" and 8':13" where he demonstrates how he interprets the concert of the great German composer, with an emphasis that cannot be reached at times through real and authentic extremely engaging gestures, as if to say: "this is how it must be interpreted this great concert, this is how this powerful instrument capable of giving unique and profound emotions must be played and tamed "
