What can safely be said about Pakistan is that here , the status quo is beyond change because the various “stakeholders”including cartels , oligarchs , and the institutions are all beneficiaries of the “system” , in numerous ways . That’s why one sees a never ending “coming and going”, of the very same brazen-faced characters entering and exiting the “political circus”in the country again and again .
The people care less ,and the institutions even less . All entities remain preoccupied with the pursuit of their narrow short term interests . That’s why a country so richly endowed with human and material resources finds itself caught in a vortex of economic meltdown that threatens it’s sovereignty and national integrity.
The looming question is , what are the causes of the economic rack and ruin , and for that one wouldn’t have to look any further beyond the stock characters of the political circus , under whose three-decades-long watch the country has slid to the verge of economic and financial collapse .
But who cares ? A Houdini of political machination and boot-licking a so-called “doer”is rolling up his shirtsleeves to assume the executive mantle once again. Never mind the billions he stashed in the account of an indigent “chaprasi”. Never mind that one of his son’s and a son-in-law is on the run to avoid answering embarrassing questions about a sudden and unexplained spike in family fortunes . It’s a neat division of labour in the family , a father-son combo is into politics , while the “fugitives”were tasked with making the most of opportunities and the “enabling”environment, that political power provided . But who cares ?
The popular Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra who was instrumental in bringing prosperity to Thailand’s farmers and agriculturists and to Thailand itself , was banished from the country and politics on the charge that he used his official position to build a monopoly in the tele-communication market for his company , which he owned prior to entering politics . Even a partial “conflict of interest” was deemed enough to indict him and declare him a fugitive from law .
But that was Thailand ;Pakistan’s exceptionalism is proverbial . Here the large-hearted institutions are inclined to condone the most egregious “rip offs”and unrestrained plunder of the national resources , provided you have the capacity to propitiate the powers that be .Both Zia-ul-Haq and Pervez Mussharaf assumed power proclaiming their intention to introduce reforms and jettison the festering political process that ensures the “circular”return of the same political actors despite their sordid track records . However they got trapped by the chicanery of the political jugglers and ended up further strengthening the festering system , and the status quo . Here the Thieves go Scot free ; while those struggling against the vested interests end up on the gallows .
