Oberheim OB-X8 Demo (mostly pads)

  • It is a great honor for me to contribute factory patches to this, an absolute dream machine by Tom Oberheim, Marcus Ryle and the Sequential crew.
    Easily one of the best sounding synthesizers I have ever played.
    I added a bit of reverb and delay to a few of the patches but no EQ or other processing.
    The unit in this video was pre-production, so it had temp knobs, not the Oberheim style knobs of the production units.
    DISCLAIMER - these demos are just a small selection of my own patches, and are in no way meant to reflect the full breadth and depth of sound the OB-X8 is capable of, which is indeed immense.

      @@jamesmeeker6933 Well, they're definitely quite important, and what gives a synth at this level it's identity. Let's just agree this machine gets an A+ in both. :-)

      @@PhilAndersonOutside I think it's exactly what I like. I was actually chopping that Tom Oberheim will come up with something like this synth.
      I just spent a little bit too much money in past 5 months or so for the stuff I've always wanted, so this one came as a surprise to me. But I think I will have no other option than pre-order it because I'm a huge fan of pure Oberheim sound. And to have 3 OB synths in one machine, that is like dream come true.

      Great ear! Steve made heavy use of the OB-8, Xpander and Matrix-12 on many early albums, both rich pads as you noted, but also in his complex sequences you can hear the Oberheim sound, such as on Life Sequence.
      There's no reason to believe this machine won't be capable of producing similar sounds in the right hands. I know Steve owns a modular analog synth from Synthesizers, but it wouldn't surprise me if he has one of these already.

      Tom couldn't put his full logo on it because he didn't own full rights to it, and it's a cross between Sequential technology and Oberheim oscillators and filters.
      You might get some of the sounds that you get from old Oberheim synths and OB-XA - but you must spend lot of time tweaking.
      On OB-X8, it's all right there for you.
      I am more of a player than tweaker, so I prefer to select the sound bank and have it right there instead of messing with the controls.

    1.) Still want the OB-6, does this capture that iconic irreplaceable sound?
    2.) How would this rate next to the Moog One 16 voice analog synth?

    • @paulschilling2996
      @paulschilling2996  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t have an OB-6 but I do have a P6 and P5rev4, and they are quite different in tonal character and overall feel. The Moog One is so different from the OBX8 in architecture and sound that it’s hard to even compare! My theory is that the more complex you make a synth, the harder it is to achieve the huge sweet spot of the P5 and OB’s.

    • @thesrabbit
      @thesrabbit 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an OB-6 and can't wait for comparisons, which hopefully we get soon now that they're shipping. I'm guessing there are some key basic tonal differences just due to the oscillators. The OB-X8 inverts the square wave when you select saw and square at the same time. The OB-6 can only blend between saw and square. The OB-6 can only do triangle on VCO 2, whereas you can do triangle on both oscs on the X8. Then again the OB-6 can blend between triangle and sawtooth, so there's that. And of course the OB-6 has a sub-osc, which adds another dimension to the core tone. When it comes to the 12db SEM filter, I haven't heard anything in these demos that makes me feel like I'll be missing something by just having the OB-6. And not being able to sweep from LP through notch to HP on the X8 is a let down. So I think the main advantages for getting the X8 lie in that 24db Xa filter and probably some increased modulation options, and maybe a bigger range on the cross mod, as well as the oscillators that will be able to make some tones that the OB-6 can't. The FX on the OB-6 are just ok, but if you use them subtly, you can bring some extra life into the sound without it being too obvious. The X8 will likely sound more lush on its own without FX. I'm curious about the vintage knob on the X8 and how much it's being used in these demos. It makes a dramatic difference in the OB-6. A total game changer when it came out in the firmware update. But really we won't know for sure until we start hearing some detailed comparisons on YT. Hopefully soon!

      You access the SEM High Pass, Band Pass and Notch in the Page two settings via the OLED screen. In that case neither of the filter type lights are lit. No seamless blending between them though.

    Idk Im still not convinced, it has a little more bottom end sure but it doesnt have that fluttery feeling the OB-6 has

    Hey Paul, sounds amazing. Can voices be individually panned?

    • @paulschilling2996
      @paulschilling2996  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      There is no way to manually set where each specific voice is panned. But lots of options to set how / how much and why the voices are panned ;-) For example how: PingPong or 4L/4R or Splayed or Spread…and how much: Full, Half, Quarter, or Mono (no panning). These settings are saved with each preset.

    I have the SonicProjects OP-X plugin (Using it with Logic Pro) this synth is so user friendly! It has a nice layout, and is one of my favorite synths😀👍

      I have this one too and I love it! But for sure the OB-X8 sounds fantastic! A bit pricier 'though... ;-)

      @@synthuser3656 Me too, one of my fav VSTi's the OP-X, sounds very 'true' as a plug-in ... and that's how it'll end, as no way have £5k sloshing around in my bank acct.(!) 😁👍🎹🎶🍻

    How does this combine wit a Prophet 10 - do they complement each other? Does it make sense to have both?

      They sound quite different and I would say the compliment each other very well.

      The OB has mostly 2-pole filter choices (except if you select the OB-Xa/OB-8 4-pole, which is like the P-10 when you select the rev3 filter), so offers a different sound palette. OB also has more features like arpeggiator, glissando (like the CS-80 has), etc

      Hey thanks, mostly Eventide Blackhole. For the ambient Steve Roach part starting at 1:06 I added Valhalla VintageVerb set to the “max” (Homestar BladeRunner”). For a few tracks sprinkled in a bit of Arturia Tape-201 delay
