Brings back good memories of being driven around in my Granny's 60s mini Cooper in the 70s. It is the sound of the gears that really do it for me!
Love that car! The sound of the engine and gearbox was pure music. I thought my 2009 S was fun, but I think this one has it beat.
In the early nineties I owned a Mini 1000 Jet Black upgraded with Cooper head, double SU's, Peco rally exhaust , 13 inch Revolution wheels and lots of John Cooper goodies like a leather steering wheel. I have driven it twice all the way to Biarritz with my girlfriend and surfboards on the roof. When I see this video and hear the sound I am back again in my Cooper.... nice

Thanks for this It's taken me straight back to the Mid seventies when I owned two cars One was a 1956 Triumph TR 2. The other i brought from my friend who was a professional car sprayer. He built a Mini Cooper S from scratch, and unfortunately damage the head which meant it had to be re scimmed which took it to 14 to 1 compression. This made it a little to hot and uninsurable. so I had a mechanic who had built the engine swap it for a standard Mini 1000 engine. I ran it for about two weeks in the over tuned form and I think I would have killed myself if changed the engine.
The body work was fab, it had been de-seamed fitted out with rover 2000 black leather seats. Twin tanks, Cooper S servo discs J 6 Goodyear Rally Special tyres. Under the hood was the tightest fit I have ever seen in a mini. Twin SU 1. 1/4 long centre branch with Pico exhaust full race balanced engine with close cut gearbox. So far so good, then the performance and I don't lie, with four up it would do 40 mph in 1st, 70 in 2nd 110 in 3rd at which point you didn't want to go any faster. well spin was a problem in anything other than perfectly dry condition, the tyres. spinning at the gear change between 1st & 2nd.
Why did it have to go, Well the start would not crank the engine, the engine only stopped 30 seconds after the ignition was off , then promptly deposited oil through the crank case breather tube. There was more petrol coming through the speedo before the engine came on cam at 3500, although the revs top end was up at the 8500 mark. but it still was the fastest car I have ever been in.
That sound is quite unique, I really love the sound of the straight cut gears

I love it how you said that you have put a lot of sound deadening but you can still hear the grunt of the engine well also the screaming from the gearbox! :-P

I used to live on mt Scott, by the radio towers. He actually passed my old house. Those roads around there can get extremely steep and that little car flew up them. U can’t tell from the video how steep I’m talking. But believe me very steep

That was only because it will put a lot of strain on the power steering system on modern cars. Such system was unheard of in the era which this mini was manufactured.
Power steering has been around since the 1950's this mini is only a 1980, there is nothing modern about PS Chrysler developed it from expired patents into the "Hydraguide". I think it also had something to do with scrubbing tyres and as you said putting extra strain on steering linkages just looks like lazy driving to me.
richard hollick you got to remember that the Mini was a bare essential's car that was designed initially to get from A to B and sold at a lost and thus, it's pretty much just small car on wheels with a heater and a engine.
The Mini started in the mid 1950s right to the early to mid 1990s.
We could do this all day, new subject what do you think of the idea of taking a mark iv mini and buying it some bling and a new badge and calling it a cooper.
I had a Mini Cooper 1969. You could not turn the steering wheel the way he does whilst stationary. This mini must have power steering.

They have a Green Mini for sale where I live. I´m still crossing fingers that it´s for me, since no one has bought it so far.

It's demands your attention and it's very engaging.
I let her drive my modified 68 bug.
And she agreed wholeheartedly.
That is what driving is supposed to be like.
We get lazy in our modern cars, and really don't have to think about driving.

Nothing unusual for us over here to see and hear a classic Mini whether its got a straight cut box or not, however over there it must turn a few heads :)
Have to ask. What's it like driving a right hand drive car in the US? I'm sure it's very weird at first if you've never done it.

as you accelerate, there is a high pitch sound. Is that the straightcut gear noise you are talking about? Or is that just the engine note?
Yes those are the straight cut gears making that sound.
The low noise is the engine. The high noise is the gears :)

just wondering how loud the rc40 exhaust is?
The RC40 has a nice note, very subtle bark but yet still quiet cruising down the road.
I have an rc40 on mine and its quiet when cruising but when you put your foot down its plenty loud
+Bondi998 There is 2 types of rc40, the rc40 single and rc40 double, if you want to cruise on a motorway or do long distance driving get the rc40 double. If you want to make the car sound nice and make it a tiny bit lighter (not that it matters) go for the rc40 single! but if you go for the single and your on a motorway or go long distance your ears will ring... :'(

Normally all Mini's are 4 speeds. Judging by the speed it's an 1275cc possible with an overbore

I would suggest the term 'Super fast' in the description isn't very accurate! That standard 90mph speedo rarely gets above 50!!
