      I'm kinda too excited for the final product and the future improvement and the possible project which i talked about before making an app that runs pre tuned setup and read tye obd2 scanner results from the car ecu and give audio to that. Would be nice to have our cars sound like our dream car which is realistically almost impossible to achieve or even if we got it we cant maintain it. Because maintaining alone cost a brand new car.

    Something to consider (you probably already have) is licensing this tech to game makers NOT as a real time simulation, but to provide a workbench where they can develop and customize their source sound samples. You could envision an API and generative workflow where custom samples could be generated based on player input, then silently rendered and captured for use in the cheat sound engines they already use.

Similar to how Ubisof churned through petabytes of animation data and compressed it down to 10Mb of algorithms.

    From a musical perspective it's fascinating to hear how the more balanced the engine and headers are the purer the 5th tone is (2nd harmonic @ 3/2 ratio)

    • @abexuro
      @abexuro ปีที่แล้ว +14

    • @kugelblitz1557
      @kugelblitz1557 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@helldiablo8471 essentially. Because of how often an engine fires, each firing of a cylinder can become the peak of a sound wave and the time in the middle can be the bottom, so if you rev into the audible frequencies it can be related to music, and then depending on the size of the cylinder, how many there are, firing order, etc., it can make different sets of notes at different intervals that blend to make chords.

    • @lllllllllllllllllllll1lll1
      @lllllllllllllllllllll1lll1 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@helldiablo8471 it effectively creates a different waveform. The peaks and troughs of the waveform are in different "locations", as you can see by the "exhaust flow" graph on the sim. It's similar to looking at a synthesizer oscillator's waveform through an oscilloscope. Different shapes produce different harmonics. The smoother and more "even" the waveform, the "cleaner" the exhaust note. Hence the cacophony of a crossplane UEL V8 versus the precise tones of an equal header flatplane. Plenty of other variables at play of course. That's the simplest answer I could think of (or at least how I see it as a modular synth nerd lmao)

    • @tsrenis
      @tsrenis ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@helldiablo8471 All sound is essentially vibrating shit. You get shit to vibrate quicker, then that's pitch.
      You can kinda observe this by using a ruler and a table. Hold a ruler against the edge of a table with your hand then slap that shit silly, the further out the ruler is, the slower it vibrates, and the slower it vibrates, the lower the pitch.

    Also I didn't mind the talking at all; both learning a bit about the engine histories, and how you came to that point in recreating the sound, were nice additions. Only thing I felt was missing was the extra segment of each engine where you removed sound except the "ticking" for lack of a better term, to illustrate the firing order at a slow/below-idling speed. The Rumble Sound can be called Flamming, from the musical term "Flam" - Percussionists use that word to describe slightly offset strokes in a rhythm that aren't so far apart that they constitute association to different beats in the measure, but also aren't close enough to sound like one stroke.
    It could also be called "Gracing" - the Flam is made out of a Leading Stroke and a "Grace" Stroke.

    Some of the radial engines used a special gearing to make the big end assembly to stay at a fixed rotation, instead of being directly connected to one of the pistons. This allowed a more uniform piston action, but probably it was more prone to failure, and caused other problems.

    Okay, I have to thank you a whole hell of a lot. I do a lot of writing about a vehicle with a 9-cylinder radial. The way I have things work, many of the clips of such engines you might find online aren't quite how I'd like them to sound (usually poor audio and lots of idling, revving the way I present in the story isn't something you do with them). Your demo here gives me a very very good idea of what it would sound like to hear, and it is a huge, HUGE help to be able to describe the sound.

Imagine creating an engine specifically for the sound, and adjusting parameters on the fly to change the tone of the instrument. I'd love to see the old four cylinder 250cc motorbike engines from the CBR250RR / ZX2R etc. that rev to ~20,000RPM.
    Hell while we're at it Honda's old race 250cc six cylinder would be an even better one to see because being a race engine from the sixties good footage of it is a lot rarer than the 250 four cylinder bikes. At least here in Australia you'd be hard pressed not to find at least one or two CBR250RRs at every meetup.

    Those engines sound marvelous. The Merlin sounds close to how I remember it IRL. The Merlin is the only one of those engines I actually know the sound of reasonably well and your Sim is close. It's not perfect, but you're simulating the engine, not the entire plane, and the rest of the plane can make it sound different (the Merlin in a Spit sounds a bit different to the Merlin in a Hurricane).
    Also, Rolls Royce did make a non-supercharged Merlin for use in ground vehicles, specifically tanks like the A27 Cromwell.

I have been keeping an eye on this project since you released your first video, because I think it would be a super cool tool to make a War Thunder sound mod (if that's even possible). Being able to simulate a tank's historic engine sound would be a dream come true for me! Excellent videos, please add the option for 180° headers which equals the exhaust pulses on cross plane V8s. This is the exhaust trickery you spoke of, that makes the cars sound more exotic. The 351w in the old Ford gt40s used 8-1 exhaust headers. Also, borla now has their "cross fire" exhaust for the cross plane 5.0 mustang, which actually takes 2 exhaust tubes (post cats) across to the other banks. This also gives the engine a more exotic sound.
