    Thanks for the video. My servo horn stripped out on my fourth battery. Shortly after explaining to my wife the high quality of the car and the reason why it’s expensive. Not a good moment. Great video and you are right. At the price point these flaws should be corrected by Traxxas.

    I stripped the servo horn on my TRX4 Bronco within a couple weeks of owning the truck and upgraded to a metal one. So far the servos have been holding on, I do realize the steering servo is probably on borrowed time.

    Wanted to add that rc crawlers have no servo saver because of clearance issues and introduction of steering slop. Extreme accuracy and torque is critical and servo savers introduce play in the system.

    I am new to the hobby and this was what I learned and it seems widely accepted. I research everything before I buy it and it almost made me pass up the hobby as a whole with all the corners cut and very high dollar upgrades needed to even be a usable rig. I still got into so I could go out with my friends and get outside in this cold weather. You are very right about it all my friend and keep up the good work.

    Stronger servos actually exagerates the #1 steering issue with the TRX-4 which is the weak Panhard link plastic base.
    When you are on the rocks you can feel how the servo seems to be maxed out but the tires dont move? look at the Panhard Base and it will be flexing a ton which limits Steering Travel.
    I recently came out with a mod to reinforce the panhard plastic base on the Bronco.. Specially on the Bronco (Will work with the new Blazer) because the Defender can easily change shock tower/pandhard base for a metallic version which fixes the Issue. The Bronco/Blazer uses the fender for both duties: Shock tower and Panhard base, This makes it very difficult to upgrade unless you lose the fenders altogether.
    Now the mod involves making a perforation in the middle of the Panhard base which has 2 ribs on it and add a bolt + washer to secure it to the C-Frame.
    1.- Use a body reamer and do a small 2-3mm hole in the middle of the Panhard base almost to the limit fo the C-Frame Bent.
    2.- Use a 3mm drill and perforate the C-Frame using the hole in the Panhard base as a guide.
    3.- Remove the Servo mount and secure the bolt + washer with a nut behind the C-Frame (There is a gap in the Servo plastic mount perfect for the Nut).
    4..- DONE! You now have a rock solid panhard link which has very little give, You will notice improved steering throw.

    For the normal guy just having fun the truck works. If your hard core then, yes, replace the servo and what ever else. Every car sold out there has something people don't like. If you take care of something and don't abuse it will last a long time.

    First thing I did on my trx4 Bronco was replaced the servo and metal steering horn, and a Castle creations bec. All my past experiences with Traxxas, especially the Xmaxx electronics are complete garbage. Whatever Traxxas you buy I'd replace the electronics right off the batt. I'd much rather run my castle creations bec than the Traxxas one. I've had no programming issues at all, on that note my Castle creations one is the waterproof one as well. My Bronco runs so much better especially with My trick RC dragon lighting system.

    When buying a stronger, metal gear servo, the hobby shop owner (who is an ex competition driver, so I trust him, and I am sure his _intentions_ were good) told me to use the plastic servo horn, so that the point of failure would be the horn and not the servo. This sounded like good advice at the time, but when the horn broke on my first run, I have decided to use a metal horn from now on.
    In fact, my new philosophy is to make every component on the model as strong as possible, and allow the point of failure to be what ever it ends up to be. This will force me to look closely at the manufacturer of whatever component is broken, and I will inevitably support any manufacturers, who are making products that are less likely to break.

Have a savox 1283 already, picking up tge traxxas BEC tomorrow. Totally agree this is unacceptable, and more of a ploy to buy their upgrades, but still one of the best trucks out there IMO. Don't believe so since it's a metal gear servo now. They've been selling a metal servo horn for the last 4 months made specifically for the TRX-4
      Plastic servo horns on RC Crawlers is a design oversight and that is unfortunate. Many folks too upgrade their servo and don't know about the servo horn issue and are very quickly disappointed.

I bought an upgraded servo saver "Kimbrough 124" and even with it's medium strength spring it gives when I try to turn because the servo is too powerful. Do these TRX-4's use a servo saver? Is a servo saver required with a brushless metal geared servo?

  • @BlueDroneBlues
    @BlueDroneBlues 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The junk steering servo circuit needs a soldering job across a fuse that is located on one of the longer sides in the middle of the circuit board. If that makes sense. I agree, why did they make such a nice truck and install insufficient steering servo and arms. Even if you want to upgrade, you shouldn't feel forced to do so because they place in parts that cannot do the job on its own.
    You make a good example that if you bought a new car say for 20k and you already knew you'd have to spend 5k of your own money for a new motor, would you buy the car?
    Upgrades should be optional. You shouldn't be forced into them due to fault equipment.

    • @RCReviewChannel
      @RCReviewChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, exactly, exactly.
      We've been getting fleeced for a long time. And it's worse with these crawlers since they have higher servo demands with rock crawling and no servo savers.

    Isn’t it better for the horn to break than the servo?

    • @RCReviewChannel
      @RCReviewChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We think this is why manufacturers ship plastic horns, because servos with plastic gears don't hold up. But rc crawlers definitely need metal gear servos and metal servo horns so they will last a few battery charges.
      We've seen so many people carry their crawlers back to the car, dejected since the servo horns fail so easily.

    Plastic steering horns are a fuse ,first impact goes in the horn .With metal horn the impact goes in the servo.Horn change 5 minutes and 1 Dollar .Servo change 15 Minutes 50 Dollars ,i prefer 1 Dollar ha ha. If you go competition take the metal Horn.

    • @RCReviewChannel
      @RCReviewChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a fuse that's guaranteed to fail quickly since the servo is weak also. How about a better servo and a better horn so one is not stuck in the middle of a trail or without a part. We've had many, many friends carry the vehicle back because of this awful spec.
      Or design in a servo saver if they're going to spec it like this.

    What they should do is sell trucks as rollers so I can add the electronics I want to add. Your alienating budget minded people who can’t drop 550+ on a truck all at once just for a better servo. 17.99 amazon servo 220 oz of torque more then enough. But we all have our own thing we want to see I have to disagree. I’d like to also see different levels of kits like the cross rc demon kit.

    • @RCReviewChannel
      @RCReviewChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Get your point about saving money for sure.
      But they are alienating users by selling kits that have no chance of working properly or reliably. Companies should sell kits with servos that work well, like the rest of the vehicle. They should spec it with Amazon servos for example where all fit and compatibility and install issues are dialed.
      Should also sell rollers where other users can have a choice of their own parts.
      It's like selling a bicycle with plastic tires, to save the user money, initially.
