    Rutger Market is one of my must stop's when I'm on island. Been a fan of them and their poke since the late 90's when I was a student at KCC. Back then, they would cut the poke and prepare it fresh when you ordered....still good today, but back then was more better. I never tried that pickled mango though... Gotta try when I see 'um!

    Great idea Misty showcasing the mom n pop grocery stores. We had a bunch in SF chinatown where I grow up. At least most of your stores are still around. Ours turned into condos and parking lots.

      That's too bad that they got rid of them. A lot of mom and pop restaurants here are going out of business due to inflation or people buying out their land.

    Nii Superette sounds cool (even if he did get rid of a lot of "the good" stuff). Think we'll check it out next time we're in town.

    Just got back from Oahu yesterday and already miss Hawaii. The weather was very nice. The only market we visited was Foodland Farms, so I'll save these for next time. BTW - satisfying my vegan and vegetarian twins was not that bad and finding parking was crazy. Thanks for your many recommendations.

    Using chayote in place of green mangoes to make pickled "mango" is just as delicious and maybe even a little better. If young, no need to peel or to deseed.

    That was interesting to hear you have a vegan nutrition style when not doing these reviews... especially since you're the grandmaster of local ono grinds. What is there to eat that's vegan besides rice & beans (I tried a vegan hamburger, and it was lousy.😂)

    • @FoodFiend
      @FoodFiend  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@fijiunlimited4503 oh I'm not vegan. I could never be. I'm more keto and carnivore. I dont eat starch or sugars throughout the week. Helps keep my blood sugar down. I get good bloodwork that way. I did a video a long tme ago about what I ate in a week, but I don't eat like that anymore. If I eat rice, even weighed and portioned, my blood sugar and weight go crazy. It's unfortunately a thing when you get old LOL So I just eat vegetables and meat. 🤙

    • @fijiunlimited4503
      @fijiunlimited4503 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @FoodFiend Ah, I see. I'm thinking of doing similar. I read steel-cut oatmeal causes a lower rise in blood sugar, though it takes like 20 mins or more to cook on stove.
