      Ben is definitely bi in the comics, but given the way he treats his girlfriends, I think it still remains to be seen if it's the same in the show...
      Maybe that's just me not wanting to claim him 😅

      I always saw Ben as bi-. However, when he and Charlie finally have their confrontation, we see an lgbtq wave approach Ben and he walks away. I feel that Ben’s inability to accept his bi- nature curdles inside him and that’s what makes him so negative. Sad.

      Unfortunately, sometimes insulting tropes are accurate. In this rare instance, it IS internalized homophobia that is making him say he's bi. He has a vested interest in being straight and yet we know that he's went through at least 2 women while remaining fixated on Charlie. He's shown a desire to be interested in women, but despite his efforts he can't bring himself to do it.

    Hi again, but is it just me, or every time Nick and Charlie hug, they hug as if they have been apart for months? Their hugs are probably the warmest I have ever seen, especially Nick's who really holds Charlie so well when he hugs him. So cute and just oozes warmth, something which this show does a lot of and is just brilliant at.

    The eating disorder is a very tough subject to approach, I think Alice has pitched it just right during this season. There were hints in season one, I wonder if anyone spotted them? Charlie never usually eating his morning cereal, just stirring it around. His packed lunch looked never to be touched. I knew this was a plot, but I enjoyed seeing how they planted the seeds of this story very early on in season one. I have watched season two by now, no spoilers, but I have to say, Alice with her writing and Euros Lyn with his direction just treated this tough subject in the best way possible.

    The really upright thing about Charlie,and later Nick, is that they don't out Ben even though he is terrible. There's even a potential argument for outing him to Imogen in case he's just using her as a beard but he could also be bisexual (which he alludes to in a way that doesn't seem ingenuine to me) and that argument kind of falls apart because then it's participating in bi-erasure.

    • @Courtney-Jai
      @Courtney-Jai  ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I like the scene of “buff Nick.” We know that some of the bullying Kit was subjected to body-shamed him and made him feel mis-cast as Nick. As a consequence, he began eating more and going to the gym. This snapshot scene shows the results. I am glad that Euros included it to reward Kit for his hard work. It is also a huge middle-finger to the bullies! You go, Kit!

    • @miriamkushel4032
      @miriamkushel4032 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This scene with David made me so ANGRY. I don't think I've ever been this angry watching a show. I'm so impressed by how Nick stood his ground against his brother, especially at his age and since he literally just figured out his sexuality. It's a really hard thing to do and I don't think that a lot of people could've been this confident in this situation. It's so much easier to go with the flow and not saying anything to avoid the conflict but he litterally asserted he's bi and pointed out the fact that his brother was being homophobic. That made me love Nick's character even more.

    This episode hurts…after the mostly positive happy in episode 1, this is a gut punch. My favorite scene is in the park. Nick clearly needed that hug and time with Charlie, just as much, maybe more, than Charlie needed him. Nick is alone, with no friends at the moment, that he can talk to. His anxiety, fear and worry about Charlie, coming out, testing, and jacka$$ Ben, is effecting him completely. Ben is gaslighting him, which makes me want to punch him (I’m not a violent person)! But standing up to his brother about being Bi is definitely super important! I love your reactions…❤

    I love that in the parent-teacher scene, they linger on a comics-panel style clip where they're both on screen at the same time even though Mr. Ajayi is FULLY done talking. There's NO reason for them to be on-screen together there, especially for as long as they are, except to start presenting them as a couple 😆

    And yes there is more swearing in the show than the first season but for me it feels more real. When Nick said Piss off in season 1 too Ben it always felt a little underwelming. In the comic it's more harsh. I like that they kinda went with that vibe in season 2.

    Kids aren’t going to talk to you when you are authoritarian like that. It’s why I think the whole grounded/can’t hang out until your school work is done/no “hanky panky” reactions are so bad. Like sure there needs to be rules to help Charlie succeed. But not one conversation was about how he is feeling, what his needs are, why is he struggling with school, etc. There was no give and take. If I had parents like that, I wouldn’t have trusted them with my life stuff either.

      He also seemed to have a panic attack at the party in the woods when he said he felt ill. He could also have had a bit of heat sicknesses as his mom suggested (he is a redhead and I know from my experience with my grandson he tends to seek shade when the sun is really strong) or it could be a bit of both. I had a really bad panic attack where I wound up in the ER because I was convinced I was dying.

    With regards to Nick and his brother - I see now that the brothers got their traits from one of their parents. Nick got his warm and caring nature from his mum 100% whereas David got his nasty selfish traits from his dad. I feel the lack of not having a father always in their lives, and a father who cares about them emotionally was a problem, it allowed David the older brother to feel he was boss. He never had a father to chastise him and to guide him, with his mum probably allowing him to get away with a lot. Nick not having his father present in his life made him more closer to his mum, and since he shared her sensitive side, this made him the beautiful soul he has become. However having the older brother David as an arrogant selfish brother, led Nick to feel he had to act tough, and join rugby team with some really vile "friends". Wow I just realised I sound like a psychiatrist - amazing how much you can delve into with Heartstopper. Sorry for making this a very long comment.

  • @williamhall2552
    @williamhall2552 ปีที่แล้ว

    Reread the books and Ben is technically classified as bisexual, though anti-people using Imogen as a beard would be more accurate. Charlie does have a load of Nick's sweaters in the books and even gives them back on Nick's birthday because they lost his scent only to get a new one from Nick. David Nelson is another example of how sometimes a pretty face hides an ugly personality and, in the end, it is our choices that show who and what we are. The most important thing in this episode are the little pieces and stresses starting to build up to Charlie's breakdown as mentioned in the books; it's not pretty, but he did get the help he needs. Love the Ajouk (or Faray) romance myself and I'm looking forward to seeing more of them in the future.

    Hi Courtney - I have seen some reactions to this episode and to Charlie's mum not allowing Nick over, and they felt she was very harsh, but I can see it from her point of view. She sees her son's grades slipping, and she only wants him to avoid Nick until his coursework is done. But many on here see her as another enemy, which is a shame, as it seems some got this character wrong. What do you think?

    • @Courtney-Jai
      @Courtney-Jai  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think she correct as parent you put your child's well being ahead of everthing else. It seems harsh because we as the viewer want to see them together but in reality I'd be the same he's not just slipping he's borderline failing that would be a huge concern for any parent.

      @@Courtney-Jai I get the sense Charlie's dad has a bit more emotional attachment to his son than the mother. It came across very well last season, when he was there for him after Nick kissed Charlie for the first time and then just abandoned Charlie. When Charlie felt totally left alone, he cried into the shoulder of his dad who said the best words "I am here for you" I think is what he said when Charlie sobbed into his shoulder. That is a dad everyone would love to have.

    • @Mixxie67
      @Mixxie67 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a parent and grandparent I think she had a very believable knee-jerk reaction. I'm a pretty low-key parent myself so I tend to avoid those but my mom was most definitely someone who would react first and maybe regret it a bit later. She used to ground me all the time but then relent after a couple of days. I think in the comments the dad tells the mom she maybe overreacted and she got mad at always having to be the bad guy and that's also a legit feeling. She's very real. She's not a particularly warm person but I do think she cares about Charlie. She may also be aware he has other issues than his schoolwork and prefers to see what she probably thinks of as an infatuation as the main cause. It's easy to look for the most obvious cause of a problem. She's complex and I don't care for her but I also don't think she's a villain.

    Why do non-men authors so consistently dump on the one G character, or, if there are two Gs in a relationship, make non-men the target audience for it? Not that Bs shouldn't be the hero, but I wish non-men would confine themselves to bi/bi couples.

      @@Courtney-Jai I didn't say they should be confined. There is a disturbing pattern emerging of non-men writing gays in ways that feel like revenge porn. I have no objection to Charlie's not being the hero or even a secondary hero; I object to the way his excessive selflessness is being pushed as Best Gay Representation. Red, White and Royal Blue and other recent light works follow essentially the same bi/pan superiour path. I don't like for young and impressionable gays to be pushed into taking after Fanny Price.
      I can certainly see at least some of the problems in the other direction and don't think most gay authors write bi men all that well either as a rule when not fictionalizing their own experiences, which is where the great advantage lies. Non-men are certainly entitled to think negatively of gays and to express those opinions; what's galling is seeing how wildly popular they are and how they are pushed as the way "accepting" people really want us to be.
      It's made me into much more of a separatist than I was, but I also wonder whether you'd feel differently if Charlie were bi. How would the balance of the series shift for you? I could probably enjoy the series on an outsider lever if there were no gays in it, as giving other letters good and needed representation.
