Some of the Roger Taylor tracks on the first several albums are absolute gems. Each member of Queen was a stellar songwriter - how many bands can do that?
Yup. That's why they were the first band ever to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, they all penned hits. The high standard you had to compete with to get just an album track! must have been huge, plus they had an album every year. They argued a lot (healthily) about what singles to release. Amazing band, seen them in 84', unreal.
Queen was very theatrical and many people in the theater and ballet realm were really into Queen because their music resembled a play, a theatrical event. As a matter of fact the Royal Ballet asked Freddie to dance with them and sing Queen songs for a charity event, Freddie did it.😂 Great reaction
Just listen to the last note Brian plays at the end of Lily of the Valley. The one that fades out. It sounds so much like a Cello to me. That's one of the things that made Queen so special in the 70s: no use of synthesizers. They even wrote it on the sleeve of the albums. Most weird sounds you'll hear on early Queen songs are almost entierly produced by Brian's guitar. Just wait til you get to "Good Company" off "A Night at the Opera" and you'll see what I mean. Absolutely mind blowing.
Three really fine songs! But my favorite is Flick of the Wrist. It's so dramatic! You really should see it Live at the Rainbow, 1974, Freddie really spits it out.
Thanks for playing these as a medley! Flick of the Wrist was a jab at a former manager. There is another song that will come onthe next album that goes with this about the same guy. Thanks for the reaction!
Awesome. The segways in that medley are a perfect example of why this is one of my favorite albums. And the layers of sound are a treat for the ears with every listen.
This album is such a step up from the first two albums in every way, especially the guitar and production work. The best tracks are still yet to come.🔥
He has two long bass solos, one in Liar and the other in Dragon Attack (from the 8th album, The Game) and some short ones throughout their discography.
I’m so enjoying revisiting this album with you. This band … this album … was a real awakening for me. I never knew music could sound like this … each band member was so talented. All of them “killer queens”.
Didn't know John played the 6 string but it always sounded unlike Brian. My favorite Roger song - especially the bass and electric guitar parts with the delay. They flow so well. And then the 'celli' from Brian at the end - wow!
I always heard that if you can play 4 strings (bass), you can play 6 (standard guitar) and vice versa. That said, I was a terrible guitar player and could only play 2 at best ( hammer on / pull off).
To 'medley', or not to 'medley', that is the question: (these three are the least likely songs to segue into one another, yet Queen did. And it works!)
Thanks, Justin... but Brian May is the guitar genius, here...and Freddie on piano... (not to take away from Deacon on bass)... this is a great feature for Roger's voice...talkin' about funster... then Flick of the Wrist is one of the first "don't piss off Freddie" songs... and of course, Lily is so pretty.. their early albums had NO breaks between songs... so cool... enjoy your reaction.
I cannot believe I haven't added this one to the album collection but will shortly. I mean after about 50 years. The first 2 albums were the best, IMO. Most of this is stuff they haven't played to death on FM. Much like early Genesis, Yes and a few others.
With all the great guitarists of the time, Brian May's approach, (tone, phrasing, and layering etc.) was ground breaking. Rankings of top guitar players from a certain publication, that gathers no moss, seem to have forgotten these contributions and the amazing pieces that resulted. Lol...everyone has opinions about that illustrious list.
Tenement Funster - by Roger Taylor John Deacon: Acoustic guitar and bass Brian May: Electric guitar Freddie Mercury: Piano Roger Taylor: Lead and backing vocals and drums Flick Of The Wrist - by Freddie Mercury John Deacon: Bass Brian May: Backing vocals and electric guitar Freddie Mercury: Piano, lead and backing vocals Roger Taylor: Backing vocals, tambourine and drums Lily Of The Valley - by Freddie Mercury John Deacon: Bass Brian May: Electric guitar Freddie Mercury: Piano, lead and backing vocals Roger Taylor: Drums
Tenement , up until now and probably a little afterwards, is the best “Roger@ song. Being a rocker is one thing but there seems to be a learning curve thing with his tunes. Yeah, they are good but his songs are always fighting for a place on an album that loaded with May and Mercury songs…. Still a great 3-song collection of what Queen is.
I like more the songs of this album than Queen 2 .. apart of March of the black queen, ogree battle etc white queen is great live but this album is especial for me ... is like they were starting to write very clever songs and more sophisticated.
Lily of the valley John on piano? This was Freddies and he played the piano John only played piano on the song he wrote when he taught himself piano You're my best friend
I've said for years that Roger Taylor was criminally underused as a singer. GIven the chance he could have been recognised as one of rock's greatest singers. Maybe to the point that after Freddie died they band could have done a Genesis and have him front the band.
The end of Lily of the Valley makes me think of the Shepard Tone (ever-rising chord) at the end of Day at the Races. . Have you heard Roger's song on Opera? I think it beats Tenement Funster.
Spoiler: Roger is a motorhead, as hinted in the lyrics, all leading up to "I'm in love with my Car" on Opera (for me, the defining Roger song) -- Justin: new plan: do Opera "Death on Two Legs" and "I'm in Love with my Car", and then fast-forward to News of the World 😁😗
Ruh-roh. I think Justin is trying to telegraph that he's not going to be a big fan of Chris Squire's bass playing when he finally gets to the Yes discography. 😉

So glad you did the medley. i bet you scored some points amongst fans.
💯 Too bad we had a bit of a blip between each track. The Baby, you’ve been had intro Lily is sooo awesome.

One
Lily of the valley Proof Positive we lost a very unique composer when we lost Freddie.
Still to this day my favourite Queen album. Variety, finesse and virtuosity in every department. Still stands up after nearly 50 years
Queen was very theatrical and many people in the theater and ballet realm were really into Queen because their music resembled a play, a theatrical event. As a matter of fact the Royal Ballet asked Freddie to dance with them and sing Queen songs for a charity event, Freddie did it.😂 Great reaction
Hugs from Brazil 🎉

you can't go wrong with Queen ... enjoy! thanks for sharing your reaction!

Brian has said that when he was laid up in hospital with hep, he was terrified the band was going to replace him! Silly boy.
One word........brilliant.
Awesome. The segways in that medley are a perfect example of why this is one of my favorite albums. And the layers of sound are a treat for the ears with every listen.
My fave album from queen ! So innuvating. Just rocks !

Millionaire Waltz?
@@sourisvoleur4854 I don't know if it can be consider as the bass and piano are doing kinda their 'particular show' together.
I really love these full album reactions and especially medley-ing the songs as they should be in my opinion
Yes! Thanks to Justin for doing it the way it was intended.
My favourite....bought it in the Summer before my 12th birthday!!!
That's really cool transition, i love Queen so much btw that's my second favorite album Sheer Heart Attack...
John does a bass solo live at the rainbow

Hey Justin - appreciate the full medley vid! Just like Kate Moving and The Sax Song... "it's better together" lol
Thanks, Justin... but Brian May is the guitar genius, here...and Freddie on piano... Dream Theater covered these three songs together, the holy Trinity as we fans call it.
Impressed how well DT did!
@@katehaynes5735 I was too Kate.I wish Freddie sang Drowse, and not Roger

Now I'm here..

Dream theater covered this medley
What a medley, 3 great songs off this incredible album
By the way it’s Freddie playing the piano not Deacon

Lily of the valley
John on piano?
This was Freddies and he played the piano
John only played piano on the song he wrote when he taught himself piano

Roger could have been the lead singer in many other bands.

Have you heard Roger's song on Opera? I think it beats Tenement Funster.

im surprised its john playing guitar given roger can and has in other songs
Ruh-roh. I think Justin is trying to telegraph that he's not going to be a big fan of Chris Squire's bass playing when he finally gets to the Yes discography. 😉
Freddie plays the piano.
It sucks that spotify clicks between each track...

Maybe the problem is i wasn’t thinking about Yes at all lol
Segue = seg-way, yes you got it right.
It's not a medley, it's 3 tracks that are sequed
Great tracks but don't think of them as a medley
