I'm glad you asked the question, because I just discovered that it works on my Galaxy Nexus (I never knew!). Using the supplied ear buds with audio controls, you can press and hold the play/pause button, and it will prompt Google voice search. It works when listening to music too. The song stops, you speak your query, then the music will fade back to normal. It's very quick and seamless. Works with screen on or off. Also works regardless what app you're using at the moment.

For me, the most amazing part is how natural the TTS is. Absolutely incredible.

The service is called Google Now, and it has 2 components.
The predictive search with the card things; this one should be labeled as "Google" in your app drawer.
The voice search, as demonstrated in this video. Should be labeled "Voice Search" in the app drawer.
Both components are integrated together as Google Now.
You can also activate them with the search bar widget on your homescreen.

OP, great vid. I've shared it via emails to individuals and in general on G+. I knew most of these but found your video in the interest of increasing my familiarity with GNow, to the end of multiplying its utility to myself. Essentially I wanted to see examples in order to increase my fluency.
    Again, thank you!
P.S. Canada Day is my birthday, the Cardinals are my team, and I was disappointed you didn't demo the "askew" easter egg. All around good vid!

I'm very impressed by google on their voice capability. They came out with voice first, apple came up with it second, then siri, but Google reminded apple who's boss at this game. Can't wait for the 4.1 update for my One X.

When asked "who are the founders of Apple" it will list but not say the name of Steve Jobs. I thought that was strange when I was playing with searches. Also I meant, but didn't get around to asking about "life, the universe, and everything". Good to see the answer that I was looking for in the video.

With the latest update (April), these commands usually work this way: say 'remind me to walk the dog' to create a note, or 'remind me to walk the dog at 2pm' to set an alarm. To create a calendar event, the only command that works for me is to say "create an event called walk the dog tomorrow at 2pm" - it's definitely not perfect, hopefully Google can make that distinction in the future.

This is amazing, this is already really close to sci-fi shit. It will be so nice when you can do all text based things with your phone through an earpiece with mic, and take pictures through your contact lenses. This tech won't be far away if research keeps progressing like this.

From what I have read, the Nexus will be sold again next week with the official release of Jelly Bean.

The funny thing is - is that with all of the comedy functionality that Apple put into Siri (such as what is the answer to life, the universe, and everything?) was actually already implemented by Google - as there are 100s, probably even 1000s of Easter Eggs on Google right now and before Siri..

  • @JeanLouisNguyen

Spoken answers with answer cards only work in US English at the moment. Here are the required settings: (1) Android Settings -> Language & Input -> Language: choose US English. (2) Google Now settings -> Voice -> Language: choose US English, Speech output: choose Always speak. (3) Google Now settings -> Privacy & accounts -> Search on google.com instead of local domain: select yes/make sure checkmark is there. Please vote up for other users.

I'm sure the devs over at XDA will soon fix voice so I'll be completely set up. If you're interested, head over to XDA and search for it. Should be easy to find.

True, Siri was it's own company. Verizon wanted to buy it to put it on their DROID line of phone as a selling point -- but Apple heard the rumour and they quickly snatched the deal.
