- Despite Jordan's best efforts to get a W in this one, you just can't win if you keep giving Chris Mullin opportunities to shoot, even if you're the early 90's Chicago Bulls playing at home. Chris Mullin leads his Warriors by scoring 38 points, while Michael counters with 40 (on 17/22 shooting!!!) and some highlight worthy moves. The version that is around on the internet of this game has the first eight minutes missing, so we don't see six of Chris's points and I suppose about the same amount of Jordan's. November 5, 1991.

Mullin was so smooth he scored so easy to the point where you wouldn't know he dropped 30 or 40 without checking the stat sheet

He was. Solid overall player, too. Guys like Dantley and Vandeweghe, primarily just scored, but Mullin was a fine passer, decent defender, ok rebounder.

There were 3 teams my dad and I would watch in the early 90s. The Bulls (because of MJ), the Spurs David (my dad was in the navy and he loved David Robinson), and the Warriors (our hometown team). Its games like this that remind me of the great times!

Notice Mullin always set himself up for the 15-20 foot jumper rather than go backwards for the 3, which he still would have been wide open for.
That mid-range jumper was a high percentage shot. Just cash money when he created/found space for it. It is a lost art these days.
prime mullin was another great guard-forward mj play against...mullin before injuries was unbeleivable...he score 38 vs prime pippen,one of the best defenders ever!
Mullin would be amazing today with the 3 pointer being more emphasized and it being a more half court game so his passing would shine. Imagine a prime Manu Ginobli but just better at everything.
David Huang Mullin would be big time in today's game, no question. He is a super underrated player that I like watching. But there is no way he would be better at everything than prime Manu Ginobili, sorry. He never was.

I'd much rather watch Mullin than Jordan, but that's just me. Mullin certainly wasn't a world class athlete and that's the real beauty of it!
always wished the Knicks bought Mullin home at the end of his career...if only for just 1 season. NYC is a pro sports town where they rarely ever pay attention to college ball in any sport. The one and only time that changed in my lifetime was during Mullin's run at St. Johns when the Big East was king. He turned this city on its ear and they loved him.
What a team (mid 80s Redmen). Mullin, Bill Wennington, Walter Berry, Mark Jackson, Willie Glass, etc. The only time I ever payed attentin to college ball... which was cool b/c it got me extra hyped about SJU nemesis Patrick Ewing.
Miss those days. St. Johns obviously my favorite but the entire Big East was amazing.

The Bulls were a great defensive team but they lose Mullin over and over somehow. He's one speed slow, yet oddly seems just a bit ahead. A pure lefty and always deceptive for some reason. Unnaturally deft and executes under pressure in traffic. Absolutely automatic if left free. Jordan was his spectacular self but this was not his night.

Just meant that his team lost. If the kids I coach look great and lose to a less talented team I don't like it when they are happy with themselves, much less suggest it was their teammates fault or that there was nothing else they could do. I'd want to bench a kid who did that after scoring 40. I'll guarantee Michael wasn't happy about this home loss, so that's two of us.
In the next game they played that season, the Bulls beat the Warriors. You can't win every game. It seems like you are low key trying to hate on Jordan for some reason.
Why don't you mention some of the losses that the Warriors had that season? Have you forgotten that in this season, the Bulls defeated the Trailblazers for the championship? Remember this same year, the Bulls beat the Warriors 112-108 in Oakland. Jordan hater and I am sure you are a non-black person.
Chris Mullin is underrated. The point is that he was not a kind of player who shows power and agressiviness like the Dream Team teammates; who dunks like, for exemple, Scottie Pippen, a player of the same position. He was one of the best shooters ever.

I never put any credibility into statements like, "Players back then couldn't do it today since everyone is faster, bigger, stronger..." or "If you put players today back then they would dominate". That's like pitting our armed forces against army of 6,000 years ago. It's a dumb argument. For instance, if people nowadays were put back in time, they would have the same body structures as people of yesteryear. Lebron James would not be 6'8" 265 lbs 20 years ago. Michael Jordan would not be 6'6" 215 lbs today. Who knows what players of yesteryear would be like today? Chamberlain was a beast, but what if he grew up with today's nutrition and had today's fitness and weight training routines? My Lord, it'd be devastating. Likewise, would Shaq have been 7'2 300+ lbs 50 years ago alongside Russell? That's a joke if you think that. So the argument that players ranging across different eras would be dominated by other eras is a very weak and ignorant one.

People are laughable. Training regimens and nutrition? Do you really think the 90's was the Flintstones era? They had both great nutrition and training regimens but players did not have to individually follow them as it was not the team's job just as it really isn't in today's NBA. The major differences between then and today other than today's greater focus on weight training, are the rule changes and the foul interpretations of today. Today's game has so much more spacing as you can't stand in the middle on defense - in conjunction with the elimination of hand checking and physical defense, it's become an open court game. Teams now have more options in terms of drafting as you can fill up teams with smaller, interchangeable guards. It's the game that's different, not the players.

That GSW team had prime Chris Mullin, prime Tim Hardaway, prime Mitch Ritchmond, prime Sarunas Marculionis! Man oh man, you could take that team, bring it in todays' pace and space game, and they'd need zero days of adaptation to lit motherfuckers up.
Mario elie, vincent askew, tyrone hill, Sharunas... fond memories. Mullin was the shooter on the dream team... second to Bird. Chris was that good. Rod Higgins and MJ were really good friends too.
Definitely Mullin was my favorite player. His way of shooting was my goal actually.

I'm not a Warriors fan, but I agree. That trade made the Golden State Warriors a joke of the National Basketball Association, as well as letting C-Webb go, J-Rich go and many others.
On this night back in 1991 the Golden State Warriors may have beaten the Chicago Bulls at Chicago Stadium, but what you have to realize is Michael Jordan won the one on one battle, Michael Jordan got 40 points and Chris Mullin only got 38 points. In Basketball it's what you accomplish one on one that counts.

Growing up on the east coast I didn't get to see Mullin play that much. But man was he fun to watch whenever I was up late enough to see the late game on TNT. We were mainly exposed to MJ, Larry, Chuck, Ewing and Dominique which definitely wasn't a bad thing. But it would've been that much better had we got to see Run TMC, Clyde the Glide, and especially the Lake Show as much as the east teams.
Now I live on the west coast and even though I can see most of the games now, basketball just hasn't been nearly as fun as in the 90's. But at least the Nuggets are making the league fun to watch again.
Sigh . . . watching Billy Owens get picked makes me realize I'm still mad at Nelson for trading Mitch Richmond to get him.

People also tend to forget that the Larry Bird's, Chris Mullin's, and Jerry West's of yesteryear would slow as hell, non-athletic, and weak even back then and they still dominated the court. People like Kyle Korver, Dunleavy, name any white guy people have a problem with, etc. are not in the same boat since they don't command a scorer's mentality like team's require in one or two people.

"MJ didn't have competition." Yeah, right... This team was one of the many good teams unfortunately coexisted with MJ and the Bulls. This Warriors team would develop into somewhat a super team with Mullins, Hardaway, Richmond, Sprewell and Webber. Well, MJ happened and he made it looked too easy.
