The thing that annoys me about this movie is how Simons friends get mad at him even after knowing he was being blackmailed. And YES the cringe factor around Martin is HORRIBLE, I can't. I hate grand gestures.
Yeah and the fact it’s like so swept under the rug after everything happened. It’s like the one plot point that really fell flat for me everything else was really awesome

While I do agree with OP, we have to remember that the characters being portrayed are 17/18, how emotionally mature were you at that age? And if you WERE fortunate enough to be that mature back then, consider that many many others may not be.
While I’m not saying that his friends SHOULD have reacted the way that they did, I can at least understand the realism of the way that they did. Humans are messes sometimes.

The speech of Simon's mom is definitely my favorite moment of this movie. The image of him "holding his breath" combined with the fact that "he finally gets to exhale" is by far the most direct and beautiful metaphor of a gay guy before and after his coming out process.

Love, Simon proves how underutilized Jennifer Garner is in the film industry. She's so underrated nowadays, it's a real shame. She was phenomenal in this movie especially the Exhale scene which still makes me cry every time I watched it
Her and Judy Greer have always had that sort of career. A few highlights here and there as the star in older movies, but for like 10 years they've been relegated to background characters, and yet always end up stealing a scene.
I saw this movie in theaters with friends, and I wasn't out to my dad at that point. The speech from his mom, I started to blubber cry and my one friend just reached over and held my hand and gave me a hug. It hits hard for me anytime I watch that scene.
That is so wholesome, soo happy for you!

Nick Robinson, who plays Simon, his younger brother came out to him while filming this movie. There is a sequel series called Love Victor. It's about a new kid Victor ,going to Simon's school. He learns about Simon and he starts texting with him as he comes to terms with his sexuality. It's has a lot of cool characters. It ran for 3 seasons and is on Disney+ and Hulu. Simon, Bram and Simon's dad have cameos. Both Love Simon and Love Victor takes place in Atlanta. A very good gay rom com is Red, White & Royal Blue. It's about the Prince of England and the son of the US President who fall in love. The CW guy produced this one too. A straight rom com I love is The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock.

Nick Robinson's brother came out as gay to him through this movie :') it's so sweet to know the movie even inspired someone so close to him. It just shows the impact media can play and representation IS important.

That scene gets me every time. When mom said, "You can exhale now." As queer that won't ever come out, at least in movies like that I can be happy for other queers.
I think most people who are out will have felt at one time that it's something that would never happen for them, there's always hope of things getting better. Obviously people have very different situations and environments, but it's a long life and there's no time limit - I hope you find happiness!

Never forget that this was the first major studio gay teen romance film and absolutely no one in the film pundit landscape talked about its importance at the time. That was pretty sad and disappointing.
I personally liked the dad’s reaction, I personally grew up with a single mother, and I thought that the fact he tried to joke a little was maybe just his way of putting himself at ease without reacting in a bad way, and I also love the little sister, she’s just really sweet
Ya know it was very hard for my dad to process that I’m bisexual at first kept saying it’s just a phase or I thinking something that I’m not but now he’s more accepting

growing up and being one of the few out gay kids at my school, this movie has always had such a big impact on me. this movie came out right after I was done with high school. I remember seeing it in theatres and just crying so hard (as did the whole theatre lol) It was so beautiful to know this movie existed for the younger generations because I didn't grow up with pretty much any queer representation in media. I walked through 16 years of my life thinking something was so wrong with me. Although I am one of the lucky ones and I have an accepting family that isn't the case for a lot of queer youth and I hope movies like these are able to change peoples perspectives. Also that scene with Simons mom about finally being able to exhale will never fail to bring on the water works for me, when it came on streaming I watch this movie with my own mom and that scene had us both sobbing lol. I came out to my mom only after I moved out at 18 because I knew the reaction would be bad. It was. My dad died when I was younger so he never knew. Every time I see those scenes between Simon and his parents, I start straight up sobbing. Ugh. Thank you for reacting to this!!

i was 12 when this movie came out and a huge flash fan. i stood up and clapped when i saw it was wally at the end. 😭
If only every mom was like Simon's mom. The world would be a much brighter place.
His friends being mad is totally understandable and he should have told Abby about it after coming out to her, maybe she could have helped. But it’s also understandable that the fear he had about everything clouded his judgement, on top of being a teenager which can also affect judgement on situations. Over all what mainly gets me upset is how they didn’t stand up for him when he started getting bullied in the cafeteria or at least talk to him after calming down a bit more to talk it all through sooner
this such a important movie for me. it came out a few months after i did and i watched it on repeat. it's not the best representation of queer people, atleast by today's standards, and is watered-down from the book to appeal more to the straight demographic but it was the first movie i'd seen that had a queer character as the lead as opposed to a comedic gay friend for a straight girls story. it was a step in the right direction.
also the soundtrack is amazing and introduced me to troye sivan, who i'd somehow missed?
It was never meant to cater to a straight audience. A lot of people have shared Simon's experiences in this movie, so "watered down" doesn't make sense because books can get away with being a bit more mature, but movies have to stick to the rating system, and Love, Simon is rated PG-13.
@@Leo-Galaxy i don't deny that people have experienced what simon goes through in the film, having just come out at the time that was very much my experience. and i'm not saying it's as bad as other films that misrepresent queer people, not by a long shot, but it has it's issues.
simon is outed and gets bullied and then martin sees no repercussions but a simple "fuck off" and his friends aren't in the slightest sympathetic. i get that they're teenagers and not very mature but they treated Simon like he was a horrible person for being blackmailed.
the actor playing Simon is great, i won't dispute it, and we have gotten better for it but it always feels disingenuous to have the lead in a queer movie be played by a cishet man as opposed to a queer one. I know it's a tired argument because "they're actors and anyone can play anyone" and "then gay people shouldn't play straight roles" but the issue is that most roles are straight roles and the few queer characters should be played by queer actors. are any of the main cast queer other than blue's actor who, when cast, was in the closet?
i know the story as a whole was hugely watered down from the book because it's a film but they changed things too simply for tension, drama and to make the fallout worse and Simon seems like a worse person so I don't know it's not a huge deal but I still wish we got some kind of apology on both ends.
it's not a bad film at all and it holds up, I'm not shitting on the film, but I have to admit it has it's issues but it shows how far queer media had come and how far it has come since with things like Heartstopper that is simply queer joy that keeps itself grounded in real world problems and tells everyone's story, not just for white gay men.
like bottoms omg does it even have a gay man in it? it's refreshing to see a queer story told where women are the focus that also doesn't fetishise them.
I'm grateful for the movie but just as people were grateful for queer characters in things like glee. a lot of the storylines and characters don't hold up or are problematic by today's standards but I don't hate it, I just like how far we've come.
@@rizzohutchings Books and movies are totally different mediums, so I get why they made those changes to work for the movie. Although I do agree that Simon's friends should've apologized. As for the casting, the problem isn't that a straight actor is playing a gay character. The actual problem is that there aren't enough gay roles out there. The more gay roles there are, the more opportunities there will be for gay actors.
@@rizzohutchings I think my biggest problem in terms of how it was watered down was the changing of side-characters' sexualities. Making Leah in love with Simon was annoying but I can see how they thought it was necessary for their plot. But there's no excuse to not mention that Cal is bi.

The movie did change so much from the book in regards to the friends though. Leah WAS in love with Nick (the friend) in the movie, and because of that she HATED Abby. So what Simon did setting them up together was extra hurtful because he KNEW Leah was gonna end up hurt by Nick not actually reciprocating his feelings. Simultaneously though Simon setting Leah and Nick together wasn’t ignoring their feelings entirely, he also thought he was maybe helping Leah get the person she wanted. Obviously it didn’t work out that way. ALSO Blue’s race is a lot more important in the books. The book makes a point on how Simon didn’t think about the race aspect much and how different those experiences would be when coming out. Is a shame because the movie kinda took out a lot of blue’s character arc. His friends were also more supportive of him in the book then in the movie. Nick even went with him to a gay bar lmao (they did film that its a deleted scene, although Nick in the movie stops talking to him which he didn’t in the book so I understand why that scene didn’t make the cut).

Love, Simon is a great film. Seems like you've all had a good time watching it.
When this movie came out, I hadn’t yet myself. I was 17, and attending Catholic school (as I had since Kindergarten, and would for another year), so I was in the thick of “hate yourself, cuz you like other boys”. It’s gotten easier with time, and I just turned 23 and am currently done with school, unless I pursue grad school. However, movies like this are simultaneously reassuring, and yet so dampening for your mood if you’re lgbt. I say this, cuz I’ve never shared a moment of intimacy even like a kiss, much less been in a relationship. Chances are if you’re straight and have a good personality, you may have at least been in your first relationship by senior prom. But lgbt youth may spend their adolescent years just coming to terms with their orientation and identity, and then MAYBE have their first closeted relationship/experience via a hookup app, or a bar, or with the requirement of circuit parties with drugs. When a straight person has their first relationship, they can introduce them to friends and family, and post their relationship status everywhere online. If you’re queer, you have to read the environment first, and if you deem it safe, then you can take the chance of any PDA. Living or coming up in a religious community, or a racially marginalized community makes this even more difficult for fear of being isolated.
To some extent, I felt I was cheated my years in high-school where I could’ve met someone. I know what makes it to the silver screen is just a romanticized ending, and not every relationship even reaches THAT point, but I would’ve at least wanted to be proud of myself in my youth. It sucks to be a young adult at 23 and having had no relationship experience. I can’t tell if any crushes I have are real, or just ideals I’ve forged. And even once you come to terms with your orientation, you have to make peace with the fact most of the people you crush on are straight and will NEVER reciprocate your heart.
I know what Simon did was shit but I’m sorry his friends are dicks for not standing up for him in the cafeteria. I don’t care how mad I am at my friend there’s no way I would stand for someone bullying and harassing them like that.
YES!! Thank you! I completely agree. If a friend made me that angry, and I felt justified being that angry, it's something I'd have to deal with with that friend. But if anyone came for that friend, oh HELL no.
exactly, being outed is SO much more serious than relationship drama. like jeez, your friend could be in literal danger from bigots, he could end up committing suicide over this, showing support for him in this time is a little more important than being butthurt that he intervened a bit in your dating life for a couple weeks. even teenagers can usually understand that
This point was addressed in one of the cast interviews. I think it was Alexandra Shipp was saying that she and the others said to the director “You know we’d totally jump in and get involved here.” And he said “Yes I know, but no.” I’m paraphrasing here but that was the gist of it

i saw this in theaters with my mom :') it was a sweet moment. I'm lesbian and like girls, but the theme of coming out was still there and relatable.
Gentlemen, can I just say that you both rock! I don't often comment but your reaction to this wonderful little gem of a movie kicked ass. I laughed, cringed and cried right with you even though I have watched this movie many times. I am almost 60 years old now and back when I came out in the 80's it was much, much more rare to have supportive allies. Today, by watching your video, you have helped to restore a bit more of my faith in humanity and hope for our collective futures. Thank you.
So unfortunately I had the opposite experience of coming out that Simon does except for one part. When Simon pulls to the side of the road and tells his friend he’s gay I kid you not it went down EXACTLY the same way with my best friend Angie. I cried like a baby watching this scene because it made me truly appreciate just how much I needed that acceptance from someone I cared about. And even though I was disowned by my family after coming out the acceptance from my friend was what kept me going. This past Fall we celebrated 30 years of friendship. Found family is everything.

Now matter how often I've watched this movie, the speech his mom gives him, and the talk his dad has with him, always has me in tears.
When it comes to school I always hate when teachers take your phone and say you'll get it after class I understand they see you with it, but just tell the students put it away . Don't just take it when you have no right too seriously.

Jennifer Gardner did a hell of job performing and really reeling in that moment when she had a heart to heart talk with Simon. It's universally retable holding something in out of fear of rejection by everyone close to you. The fear and disappointment can definitely hold you back from living life. Glad both parents got to have good scenes of revelation with Simon.

Jeniffer Garner's speech has got to be my all time favorite coming out/acceptance scenes ever. I think it's tied with Elio and his dad's scene in Call Me By Your Name.
I was struggling with coming out right when this movie was released in theatres. Movies are my biggest passion and I remember seeing the trailer and thinking, “Damn… if there is a time to come out, this is it”.
I ended up seeing the movie 4 times in theatres both with someone new as my way to start coming out. The whole film encapsulated how I was feeling with my own internal struggles, as well as my fear of being treated differently and having my life and relationships change.
I know this movie isn’t a blueprint for coming out for everyone, but it just so happened that it was released at the perfect time in my life. And yes, I watched Jennifer Garner’s monologue on loop crying because it hit me so hard when I first heard it.
I’m glad you both enjoyed the film and I love that this channel doesn’t shy away from certain subject matter.

Greg Berlanti also wrote and directed another gay-themed movie in 2000, a hilarious comedy called "The Broken Hearts Club," with Dean Cain and Timothy Olyphant. I think y'all would enjoy that one too.

The drama teacher was also in the show Insecure If you guys watch that. She was phenomenal in this movie and as an actress in general

I will say that this movie did speak to me as a gay man in his 40's. I went to high school in the 90's and even though I had friends that were openly gay it was absolutely terrifying to admit it especially to yourself. It took me ages to admit it to my parents even though they had an openly gay man be the godfather of my sister. The part that I resonated with was the part with Simon and his father at the end of the movie. Part of what made it so hard to come out were a lot of the homophobic jokes that my own dad made with such ease while I was growing up. It reinforces that fear of not being accepted. As for Simon making bad decisions when it comes to his friends, i will say that desperation does make people do things that is not necessarily what they would normally do. His friends were in the right to be upset with him for what he did, but they couldn't understand how hard it is on him to make that decision when he was so desperate to keep the most personal part of him to himself. Unfortunately I do relate to Simon on the being outed. Unfortunately i had a sibling that outed me to a group of people that i didn't know before i could figure out what my sexuality was. While we are soo much closet now than we were back then, it still is a very traumatizing event in my life that i can't shake off.

Such a good movie, about how it can be messy and hard to find one's way in life but helps if there is love, understanding and support, and apologies and changes as necessary.
CALIFORNIA FACT & LAW: Teachers cannot take away a student's phone. It is the student's property and the teacher is liable for any damages or loss. I was a paraprofessional right after the schools started up again and quit immediately BECAUSE of phone use. I knew this ain't old-school Philippines where my now-retired college professor of a mother threw a chair at a student in the 80s-90s.

As someone who’s LGBTQ it’s refreshing to watch a “gay out” movie that isn’t pity porn (for the straights) it actually has a great story & it FEELS just like how it felt to be closeted as a teenager. Proper representation. It’s good to see a positive gay out story where the acceptance from different people comes in different levels, especially the way his macho guy dad finally came around in his own way.

Martin said he has a gay brother but I wonder how his brother would feel if he found out Martin outed Simon
In the book Martin writes an apology letter to Simon where he says that his brother found out and made him delete the screenshots before he was ever able to get around to blackmailing Simon (he outs him without posting the screenshots in the book), but then he went ahead and did it anyway. He also says that resentment towards his brother for the attention he was getting after he just came out was part of the reason he blackmailed Simon iirc. So yeah, he's even worse in the book, and has basically no redeeming moments.

I first became aware if Greg Berlanti as a director for Dawson's Creek, long before the CW superhero shows.
This movie came out like days after I came out to my parents. I didn't cry the first time I watched it, when I went to see it with my friends. But I cried the second time, when I went to see it with my parents.
The no phones in school thing is real. I work in a school now, and we don't allow students to take their phones out at all. Even in the hallway
