The song was written by Abdullah Ibrahim in honour of the now late journalist Mr. Michael Tshehla Phahlane who had distinguished himself as a jazz critic through his journalism career. It is said of Mr. Phahlane, "he wore his passion for this noble art on his sleeve and with his elegant but cheeky prose, championed its beauty and cause on the pages of the racy publication" (the Zonk, by which he was employed). Jazz introduced Mr. Phahlane to a young and lanky pianist from Cape Town (Ibrahim). Though Phahlane loved the shy musician’s efforts on the ivories, he never liked his name. So he gave his protégé a new identity - Dollar Brand. Phahlane reasoned that a 'dollar' was the world’s most powerful banknote at the time, and Ibrahim was destined for bigger things in the United States. And so, years later after Ibrahim went to the United States as an exile, he expressed his gratitude by recording "Bra Timing From Phomolong", a bluesy, meditative hymn that came straight from the soul of Soweto.
