One of my best musical memories is of a concert in New York, by Abdullah Ibrahim, still Dollar Brand then. It was snowing in Manhattan that night. That was 1978, my youth. So magnificent. This piece is one of his best. Soothes me always when I need it. Sounds like Basil Coetzee on sax.
Been hearing this masterpiece by the Jazz Maestro himself since I was a toddler (played by my father). Pretty much been hearing it a lot since then. Today I’m a 22 year old jazz FREAK, and this piece of art sits neatly in my -carefully compiled- playlist of over 300 jazz favourites.
Blues For A Hip King by ntate Abdul Ibrahim😊😊 I can't stop smiling stupidly because of the warm/fuzzy feeling I'm getting at the bottom of my stomach which is induced by good memories & the nostalgia attached to this song. Beautiful childhood memories i won't trade for anything
I bought the vinyl version at Stern's in London in 1988 and am itching to get in the loft and dust it down...'warm and fuzzy' sums it up. It was 33 years ago!
A lovely, melodic, deceptively simple tune that speaks straight to the soul. Non-agressive, life affirming, uplifting. This is a masterpiece. Thank you.
Sim esse e verdade minha mae e pae e Africana du sul. Mas esse musica muito bom mas eu sou brasileiro... The best of the best. Just saying i havnt been to Africa but this is the best ever written
Takes me back to my exile days in Lesotho. Memories of my dear departed comrades Leon Meyer (Phakamisa Juluka Lee), Cliff Brown (Alf Siqale) and Ligwa Mdlankomo (Zakes Bani) we’d gather at their Motimposo base break bread and listen to music from home and this was held a very special place in our hearts, it’s tinged with notes of nostalgia. Yearnings of the fresh air of home. Thanx Dullah🙏
Can't recall how or when exactly I was lucky enough to stumble upon this wonderful piece of muscial art, but I am forever happy I did. Will probably come back and listen to this until the day I lay myself to rest a final time. Balsam for the soul
It may have been around 1992 Ibrahim played this song with an ochestra, and my wife who is die hard Bach and Handel fan just could not believe how a song could be so transformed.

This classic brings me great memories as a young boy growing up in Grahamstown. This is the reason I fell in love with and learned how to play piano, thanks to this Jazz Maestro. For those pianists who are interested I have attempted to write the music score (piano line) for this best ever song ...shout if you are keen for me to share it with you.
Naw. man, in 2020 it's 23 downvoters who don't want to ride with us, the coolest people in the world. So, that's cool. Who really cares? Maybe in years to come, who knows, if we survive, the planet and humans, I mean.. maybe they will return and learn to dig the music. Maybe not. But all the same, it ain't up to us, right. Just not. Cheers.
This track takes me to "church", not your conventional church as we know it, the Universe kind, the "everybody is welcome" type, the "come as you are" type... Hope someone can testify 😏
Been listening to it all my life , I'm 62 and can't get enough of it .
Uncle Abdullah is the High Priest of African Jazz
Thanx Ibrahim.....I can listen to this all day long ...just let my mind drift....

Is this based on Bach/Handel? Is it taken from classical? Which tune if so?
