I moved from an i5-4460 to a Ryzen 5-2600x and have never thought about going back. I have had a Ryzen 7 fail on me, but I contacted AMD about it and they replaced it super fast pretty much no questions asked. This Intel Fiasco has me not even looking to Intel for their low end stuff. If I can't trust a company to stand behind their product, I will not be investing in said product.

Thanks for the kind words UFDTech! We have to shout-out intel for doing the right thing and extending their warranty by two years. And remember UFD viewers with Raptor Lake desktops: update your BIOS'- now! Don't wait for the next microcode (get that when it comes out too). The sooner you update your BIOS', the sooner you can prevent CPU degradation and hopefully never need to worry about RMAing a CPU at all.

for other ones, some got 13% uplift, some less, if we look at performance we can get then memory tuning is great way, as for curve optimizer and shaper, best case got 40%, and half of tests were able to get +20%+ from PBO, CO and CS + memory tuning... for non tuning numbers, it's +- 3% and some workloads have more like 20%, but it's not that great for most

I just remember GN talking about all the issues with the 80+ cert. With all the poop that Intel is going through with their CPUs, as someone who bought intel for just about every computer they've had over the last 34 years, I think I dodged a bullet with my first AMD Ryzen build. Granted it's a 7700 non-X chip, and not the top-of-the-line chips, but if Intel is behaving this poorly and dragging their feet to do the right thing for their flagship chips, imagine what it must be like if you have a lower tier chip and something goes wrong that warranty should cover.

It's not as big of a deal as some are making it out to be.
If you build computers you know to check the motherboard voltage settings after every new build. If you did that you wouldn't have a degraded chip right now.
If you didn't do that. You would now have a 5-year warranty, and the option to get a brand new chip.
I've been building computers a long time too and I'm not worried about it at all. I even decided to capitalize on the situation since I knew perfectly good chips would start getting returned because of all the drama. I just bought a 13700k for $250 w/tax. Amazon return in brand new condition. Just open box.
I still think you made a good decision though. 7700 even the non x is a really good CPU. If I didn't score the 13700k for the price I did, that 7700 was probably the chip I was going with.
Wendell said if you have a 7700x don't even bother upgrading to a 9700x. I know you have the non-x, but it's really close in performance to the x version, but has the same TDP as the new chips. Honestly if I was in your position I'd keep that 7700 a bit longer.

This. This is exactly the right point of view.
The new CPU have more or less the same performance in gaming as the old ones for about half the power consumption (and completely trash the previous generation in professional workloads).
Is that worth the replacement from a 7000 CPU if you just need the PC for gaming and everyday stuff and your system is running great? Probably not.
Is it worth getting the 9000 series over the 7000 if you are building a new PC from the ground up or upgrading from older gens (maybe AM4)? Heck yes.
You can either get, for less money, a CPU with the same level of performance and half the TDP (which means smaller less expesive cooler and psu) or, at a slightly higher price, a CPU one class of performace above its equivalent in the 7000 series and with the same TDP.

So, based on your logic, if you buy a car from Toyota, but a computer chip fails on that car, you expect to receive warranty service from the chip manufacturer (not Toyota)?! Seems like a PITA since Toyota probably sources computer chips with different companies. You need to understand that Intel is just a part supplier to companies that build/sell computers.

    • @JailbreakMoments
      @JailbreakMoments หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Comparing cars to computers is an apples and oranges comparison. Unlike modern cars, desktops are designed with complete modularity in mind. If a part fails, said part can be very easily replaced, and when that particular model part has consistent failures, the issue lies in the manufacturer of said part. This is the turmoil intel is currently in.
Intel is partially to blame for knowingly selling faulty parts to the consumer, as well as the motherboard manufacturers which had firmware that supplied too much current to the CPU.
I should also mention, a large portion of desktop computers are custom built. You can’t exactly approach the manufacturer of the company that built the computer if there is none.

Jokes aside, 9700X and 9600X are pretty disappointing performance wise, efficiency wise they're really good, Zen5 cores are physically smaller than Zen4 cores, they used 4nm which is barely an improvement over 5nm, and managed to reduce power consumption by a lot while maintain the same or 3-5% more performance, these facts prove Zen5 uArch is really good, it is simply handicapped at the moment with power and memory constraints, I imagine the 9950X would be better, and X3D would be a lot better especially if they move it to 3nm.

So AMD pulled back the power on their CPU's... I am starting to think both Intel and AMD are both at fault for pushing CPU's past a limit they never should've been pushed to in the first place. Running high 80s-90s° should never be a "safe TJ MAX" temp for anyone and this is why AMD pulled the power back as they know their CPUs that are running these kinds of temps along with the amount of power you "can" push through them to make them run faster will just end up doing the samething Intel did by pushing their CPUs to the max. I hope I am wrong but I have a feeling you will start to see AMD 7000 series CPUs having issues.

If AMD didnt always resort to lying. the CPUs arent bad, just a bit lackluster. The 9700X is just a bit faster than the 7700 - and costs a lot more. And after 7 years we still have the same 6 cores just at a higher price.
And as for Intel and RMA - uhmmm... anything bought from an OEM goes to the OEM. That is the same with AMD. If you bought an AMD product from a systemintegrator AMD will not take that part back. Just go ask the people that bought 1st/2nd gen Ryzen mobile how """great""" their experience was with the bodged UEFI updates.

Ie 2-3 generations of comfortable headroom for bumps if there are other issues.

AMD has pulled of a lot of IPC improvements, but the power limits are a bit too conservative (9700x only hits 65C at full power). The 9700x can actually beat the i7 14700k if you give it 120 Watts

It appears the play this time around from AMD was efficiecy... but they did not appear to play that fact up in there presentations. This is fine, and should be great for the mobile side of things, but it makes things not look great in the reviews... There is also the fact that on a desktop power consumption is not a huge deal, so long as the chip can be cooled within reason. Intel has gone way to far the other direction while it appears AMD took the overly conservative approach to power with this release.

11:20 The better efficiency is only if you compare to higher TDP parts, for example if you compare the 9700X to the 7700, there's only a 7% difference as Hardware Unboxed pointed out in their 9600X review, it's only when you compare the 9700X to the 7700X, which is well outside the efficiency window, when the 9700X looks much more efficiency.

It looks like Zen 5 is perfectly tuned for low power enterprise use. I saw one benchmark where it doubled the competition in calculations per watt.
They haven't bothered to tune it for desktop. Maybe they don't care about desktop or maybe they haven't been sure that new nodes are safe at higher voltages and they want to avoid an Intel situation or, more likely both.

If AMD either lowered prices by 50-100 dollars instead of just 20-50, it would have been a lame, but actually decent launch. Better yet, they could have made up for the small single core improvement by giving more cores. 20 core 9950x, 14/16 core 9900x, 10 core 9700x, 8 core 9600x, and maybe even a 6 core 9500 or 9300x. That would have been a really cool launch, but shouldn’t expect companies to do anything like this.

the speed for CPU has been so great for like 5 years, there is very little going to be gained, you dont even need to upgrade from a 5800x unless you have a 4070ti+ and even then it will be small gains, thank goodness they giving up on the whole just throw 600w at the Cpu and deal with the overheating and intel silicone breakdowns. that was crazy

The pricing could be better as we are getting a lower watt chips. I think they are doing exactly what AMD wants, they are running a smidge faster than the old ones with less power, I see this as a win! This will make better chips better with lower power usage and they could end up making a chip that is insane if they can find the material to not have them deteriorate like the Intel chips.

I mean power efficiency for a performance at this level might not translate to power efficiency for a performance of a higher level. We'll have to wait and see. Still, the high performance-to-TDP ratio is pretty nice, gives you more freedom for cooling and maybe even more silent options.

7800x3d is the best buy right now imo from AMD, but, I'm kind of holding off judgement until the R9's are out, because they aren't reducing their power envelope near as much as the R5 and R7, so maybe they'll be more impressive, and possibly that's what AMD is going for, a bigger difference between their lower end and higher end parts? IDK, if not, this is just a weird offering from AMD compared to the last few generations.

I see the 9600x is pcie gen 5 for graphics card and nvme. Since its pcie 5 fully, if the RTX 50 series and ryzen 8000 comes out in pcie gen 5 then those cpu's can maximize the cards speed.

Even on PCIe 4, they'd be running at full speed. As long as they have enough bandwidth there is basically little performance difference between PCIe 5, 4 and even 3 in GPU performance unless the card is bandwidth or memory starved like the 6500XT.

Actually the Ryzen 9000 are not that impressive when it comes to efficiency as well. I believe it was in the review of the R5 9600X where they plotted the ryzen 7 7700 non X (which is also a 65W CPU) and the 9700X did marginally better scores, consuming the same amount of energy.

Certifications like 80 Plus seem like they are often used by companies to scam people into buying bad products with a veneer of quality/efficiency. We bought a fancy new Samsung washer and dryer set a few years ago that were supposed to be way more efficient. However, I am pretty sure they claim this by having the default settings when you turn them on to be a very short wash cycle that I never use, or an auto-sensing dryer setting of "less dry" that leaves the clothes soaking wet. Sure, it doesn't consume as much energy, unless you use it the way it has to be used to be useful.
