It's such a shame that one of the most beautiful games ever made has its visuals handicapped (still looks great) by a terrible anti-aliasing implementation. They should really give us a "next-gen" upgrade and try to fix these issues

I used your exact settings basically, and my game is a lot clearer. I'm on 1080p on a laptop and my game looks so much cleaner and sharper. Medium TAA, 5 notches of TAA sharpening, and I adjusted my sharpness to .50 in the NVIDIA control panel and set Ignore Film Grain to max. Textures, grass, and even the distant mountains are so much more detailed and crisp. Thank you.

      TAA = MEDIUM

TAA Sharpening = 20 steps to the right side (its default) or up to 40 steps = 50%

Great guide, man. Recently upgraded my PC and I'm running the game at 1080p but with the resolution scale bumped up to 1.5 (meaning the game is actually rendering at 1620p). Even though my monitor is 1080p, the increased rendering scale works as a sort of super-sampling anti-aliasing. Paired with the tips you just gave, the image quality is much better now. My rig is capable of playing the game at 4k with everything maxed out, but the fps is inconsistent, it can hover between 55 to 65/70 depending on the location I'm at, so I just prefer to run at 1620p and have more fps + making sure it doesn't drop below 60. Its a shame that Red Dead 2 has such a "shaky" image quality, because otherwise the game looks phenomenal.

After thoroughly testing all the configurations, I must give you the reason in 1440p taa medium with 20 touches on the bar is much better than dlss, the game simply looks sharper, dlss activated gives me 20 more fps but despite playing with the sharpness the trees look worse, and there are strange effects in the hair, strange lines are seen in the textures and there is a strange effect against the light when there is a sunrise or sunset, my advice is this, if you manage to get between 50-60 fps Without activating the dlss, don't use it, the game loses a lot of image quality, on the other hand, if you have a pc that only manages to give you 30 fps, it's worth using dlss to be able to reach that fluidity in the game, sacrificing a bit of image quality. Until today dlss do not convince me, they have to improve it more.

In 1080p the game is unplayable. It's a ghosting and blur fest. I have to crank up internal res up to 1.5x to make it look sharp but also cap framerate to 30 fps because my RX588 can't handle the game in such high resolution. So I have to choose the lesser evil. PC port is atrocious. Two years after release and it's still a mess. I was always jealous of XB1X users. It has the same GPU but runs the game at native 4K. The game looks incredible in 4K, like a CGI-movie. TAA is great in high resolutions but awful in 1080p and lower.

most modern games these days benefit from DLSS being the superior choice for AA, even above native, this is however NOT the case with RDR2. the game was just not optimized for it back then when the pc port was done. the game itself is optimized very well framerate wise for what it does but the AA sucks.

yeah I find I leave taa on high since thats the anti thing done , I leave the other antialiasing stuff off but have everything on ultra max settings even the water so my thing becomes custom high. I have a clear screen in hdr 4k , but what I found is if I start stuffing around with the MSAA it only then becomes 'Vaseline' look. so I leave it off, I think I'm right if you have 1 or the other on because then it starts fighting against each other becomes creamy and then is a lot less sharp.
btw I have a 4090 OC card but I dont use motion blur its really annoying to me.

There are lots of mods for this game called Visual Redemption, or Ultra sharp TAA, and many others. They're really easy to install, easier that fiddling with the game like this I'd say. These methods are subpar compared to that. You don't even need to use supersampling when using Visual Redemption.
Also, Xbox One X's version of the game runs at fixed native 4K, without dynamic scaling.

@Lordbugbug That's how TAA works, unfortunately. If you want clear image, turn off both TAA and FXAA (because FXAA produces even shittier image quality) and use MSAA or downsampling. Another mistake that you make in this video is the use of sharpening, sharpening is a destructive visual effect and you should avoid using it when its not needed, if you turn off TAA then there is no need for sharpening. Just use MSAA ×2 and take the 10 fps hit, it is worth it.

Good video that works, I would also majorly recommend installing a TAA mod on nexus mods as apparently the TAA blurriness and smudging was set to be run at 30 fps so its more blurry to reduce shimmering at lower frames, So the mod changes the blurriness and other values to make it look more sharp.
There are also 3 different files for different fps counts and settings for your preference with different scales of how much the blurriness has been reduced that could increase shimmering.
Edit: Also, if your pc can handle it and your willing to sacrifice some fps you can enable msaa x2 and that will fix the blocky and blurry trees and give a sharper picture
Edit 2: unfortunately MSAA introduces an LOD bug for trees where trees will become invisible and disappear so the only "real" way to get rid of all the issues that TAA causes, mainly blocky/blurry trees without any issues is to play at a 4k resolution or upscale as the mod doesnt fix the trees and reducing the TAA blur to try and fix the trees will result in shimmering

It's weird how MSAA and FXAA used together still look worse than TAA. There is something wrong with this game. It's probably the results of the game being made for 4k and the textures being too high quality. The game was made for the future basically.

dlss implementation in this game is so bad it only gives you 5 to 10 more fps while making everything blurrier than turning on FXAA.
I will try to play around with resolution scaling though to turn any extra bit of spare performance into better clarity

    Hey!
I've been doing this for about a year but; I went onto RDR2 yesterday and suddenly my TAA, FXAA and MSAA are all greyed out? Is this just me or did a patch break something? I can't play with just TAA on alone and it's automatically set to High even though it's greyed out. I've tried to edit the settings in the Rockstar folder via notepad as well but even after I've saved it, it's unchanged ingame. Does anyone know a fix to this? 😥

too bad TAA makes the tree leaves huge, at 3440x1440 anyway.
indeed it seems the game is built for 4k
Only DLSS fixes that so i just use quality setting, to have a completely clear image i need to combine it with DSR
(external in this case cause internal resolution scale gets disabled with DLSS for obvious reasons)
    - but then unless you have a 3090 or enjoy 30fps it won't do much good to ya!
