Yup! The bar attached to Max’s was there 1st also. It’s was called Eagles Bar. I’m from Erie Ave. I grew up there. My family owned a flower shop at Broad & Erie called Carlino Flowers. Both my parents grew up down there on opposite sides of Broad St. I still have family that live in the family home just a couple blocks away from Max’s. There are so many food spots just feet away from Max’s on Gtown Ave that have bomb azz food. King Of Pizza down the st. from Max’s, Erie Sq diner next door, Young’s Deli directly across from Max’s. Then down to Gtown & Tioga St u got Muffins next to Temple Children’s parking garage.
Pagano's is my favorite cheesesteak , I prefer them over Max's. But if I can't make it up West Oak Lane when I'm in town, I just hit the West Philly Jim's.
In high school, I was in Art Club. We took a trip with the crew from NC up to the Northeast to hit various museums in NYC, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, etc. First night, they dropped us off on Broad for "free time" and me and my homies wandered over to Max's. It was the best sandwich I've ever had in my life, to this day. Can't say enough about it.
As a New Yorker who visits Philly often, I didn't know about "MAX'S" until a friend of mine took me there once he heard where I've been sampling steak sandwiches around the city in the past. Since then, I will hands down attest that "MAX'S" makes the BEST dam steak sandwich anywhere! NO CONTEST! What you see here in this video is correct, it is not dressed up in anyway for the camera & etc. These guys throw down the best meat creations money can buy, putting all of the other tourist traps to shame. You get a huge sandwich with the freshest ingredients, half a cow's worth of meat, serious amounts of cheese, and the freshest rolls ever. My daughter and I was at Max’s about 2 weeks ago...they were amazing!!! My daughter had chicken with nothing other than the cheese and honestly I had nothing to compare it with. I’m from Philly born & raised. I actually lived & grew up like 3blocks from Max’s Steaks that used to be called Eagles Bar. My family still lives there. Their steaks are good, but THE HOAGIES….are phenomenal. They have this seasoned oil that they put on the hoagies that makes it taste even better! The way the steaks are cooked at Max’s Steaks is how damn near every Philadelphian eats them. Not the way Pat’s & Geno’s make theirs. We want our meat diced & chopped while it’s being cooked. Not cooked like other places in other cities that try to imitate us w/ what they call a sub.
I will be back home in Philly for a vacation in July. I'm definitely going to Max's. I had a Max's cheesesteak in 1998. That was the only time. I usually go to Jim's in West Philly where I grew up.
Im from that hood I learned how to make cheesesteaks watchin the muslim brothers at max make mines. I looked over the counter now I got the gift. Everybody loves my cheesesteaks.

Every spot used to have those 2ft joints. They can miss me with the peppers and pickles, but other than that they got it. I could never eat one of those joints on the spot, I'd have to let it marinate on the way home. You know it's ready when you can hold it upside down and nothing falls out.
Anyone considering going to maxs, just know you’ll be in line for over an hour. I had only 15-20 people ahead of me and it almost made me miss my flight home lol
