  • Why The Date of Lent Is Not Fixed?
    .
Another blessed day to all of us. Now we will discuss on why the date of Lent is not fixed? Did you notice that Holy Week sometimes happened in the month of March and sometimes in the month of April? That is what non-Catholics are criticizing since the date of Christmas is fixed at December 25, yet the date of Christ's death is not fixed. How to answer this?
    .
First of all, we will make it clear that it is not the date that Catholics are celebrating, but the Christ's act of salvation to the whole mankind through his Crucifixion at the cross. Thus, it is not important if Holy Week occurs in the month of March or April. But why the date is moveable?
    .
It is because the calendar used as the basis of Christ's Crucifixion is the Hebrew Calendar. The death of Christ happened during the Jewish Feast called the Pesach, Pascua or Passover. And it happens only in the month of Nisan, based on the Hebrew Calendar. The month of Nisan coincides with the months of March and April, based on the Gregorian Calendar. Thus, if you look at the calendar, Holy Week occurs in the Month of March and April, the month of which Passover is celebrated in Israel.
    .
During the 2nd century, there was a disagreement of the early Christians on what date would they celebrate Easter. That was being called the Easter Controversy or Quartodeciman Controversy. There were Christians in those period who instead of celebrating Easter on the Sunday after the Passover, they celebrated it along with the Jewish Passover every Nisan 14, even if the day would occur on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Whereas, many Christians before had celebrated Easter during Sunday after the Jewish Passover, since Christ had resurrected on Sunday.
    .
That controversy resulted in a short lived schism. Because many of the bishops in Asia Minor, which is now in Turkey, headed by Polycrates (the bishop of Ephesus) had celebrated Easter on Nisan 14. They had convened many synods in order to come up with united date of Easter, but were unsuccessful. That's the reason why the Bishop of Rome named Pope Victor wanted to excommunicate the Bishops who celebrated Easter on Nisan 14, but was not pursued through the intervention of St. Irenaeus the Bishop of Lyons France. When the ecumenical Council of Nicea was held, bishops had finally agreed that the Easter must be celebrated on the Sunday after the Jewish Passover.
    .
Easter Sunday occurs near the Full Moon. Look at your calendar and see that Easter Sunday is just near the Full Moon. It's because the movement or phase of moon is the basis of the Jewish feast. We can read it in Psalms 81:3:
    .
"Blow the ram’s horn when there is a New Moon, when there is a full moon, on our festival day" (Psalms 81:3)
    .
Based on the verse that we've read, the day of the festival occurs either on the New Moon or Full Moon. Easter Sunday occurs near to the Jewish feast of the Passover. Let us see the Jewish Calendar. There it is. The Jewish Passover occurs near Easter Sunday of the day of Christ's Resurrection. If we will count the days from Easter Sunday back to the Ash Wednesday, it sums up to 40 days (excluding Sundays). That is why the Lenten Season is called "Cuaresma" in Spanish, which is derived from the Latin "Quadragessima", which means 40 days. This 40-day duration mirrors the 40-day fasting of Christ before he started his ministry.
    .
The date of Easter was previously announced by the Pope. And it was relayed to the different places. However, there came a time that they had difficulty for communication, since there was no cellphone nor telephone during those days. Another problem that they encountered is that the Hebrew Calendar where they based the date of Easter, is moveable. Sometimes, the Jews added days or month in their calendar because it is not coinciding with the seasons, since the Hebrew Calendar is not accurate. Also, the Julian Calendar is also not accurate that is why it is already behind the seasons. That's the reason why Pope Gregory XIII had decided to make our own Calendar in order to project the dates of Easter every year, independent with the Hebrew Calendar. Pope Gregory XIII had commissioned the famous astronomers like Fr. Christopher Clavius and Aloysius Lilius in order to revise the old Julian Calendar. In order to make it more accurate, they had improved the leap year, just to synchronize the dates and the seasons. Their basis of getting dates for Easter is the Spring Equinox or the day when the duration of daytime and nighttime is the same. Spring Equinox occurs every March 21. Thus, Easter Sunday happens on the last week of March until the 3rd week of April, when the Full Moon occurs after March 21 (Spring Equinox).
    .
On the 16th century, the Gregorian Calendar was made, which is the most accurate calendar that is being used by many people until now. Because of the Gregorian Calendar we already knew the dates of Easter every year.
