3 Ways to Set Square Cabochons: A Silversmithing Tip

- This tip shows how to make 3 different mountings for square or squarish stones that aren't standard bezels. There are tons of variations possibilities with these, so have fun experimenting! I would categorize these as intermediate level. The materials for these can vary, but for these ones, I used 26 gauge sterling sheet, 22 gauge sterling sheet, 26 gauge sterling sheet, 22 gauge sterling wire 16 gauge sterling round wire wire, 14 gauge sterling square wire, 14 gauge sterling round wire. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and My-T-Flux from Rio Grande.

I had a booger of a time, melted several of my my loop prongs along the way. It definitely went through an ugly stage, but I finally got it together. You make it look so easy!

Hi Chad! Ambitious again! These 3 of a kind projects are amazing. I have a question for you about the ring square setting. What measurements would I take on my square stone to make this setting? You said "a little bit bigger," but I'm not sure what that meant. Thank you as always, maestro! 🌺🌺🌺 Did I miss something pr was the explanation of the last piece accidentally edited out? Ot sort of looked like the stone went i. From the back - which you said was ghe plan, but have no idea what you did, and why/ how (the pieces). What did you do? Fold something up, or down? Open? Push something? Love to know - thank you!
Hello Flying Chef:). On this one, I made the square so about 1 mm stuck out on each side to allow placement of the loops. You could also probably mount them on the outside of the square if you wanted to. Regarding the rear mount, yes, I bent up those flaps I soldered on, put the stone in from the back and bent the flaps down to hold it in place. One thing I could have done better is give myself a tad more room to allow for the bending up of the sheet on the back. I didn’t leave enough space to easily pop the stone in. It took some persuading to get in there:). Next time I’ll know to do that!

I checked out your website. I really liked your dangling flower pendant. Any chance you could do a tutorial on that? I have a design for earrings that has some similar components. I’m able to solder the components fine but when I try to solder the components together I end up melting the silver. I gave up for now and just wire wrap the components together. They look fine and people seem to like them but I think if they are soldered together they would look more professional
Hello Margaret:). I actually made that one while producing an exclusive tutorial for my Patreon tier 2 and above. It’s a available over there. You might try watching a video or two where I’m soldering together lots of little components. Here is one:

Nice video! I have a couple of odd stones that this will work well with. Do you ever work with argentium wire? If not why or what is the difference? Those pieces turned out beautiful!

O-wy-hee (wy like Wyoming) May I make a suggestion? Is there a way you can rig your camera from above your work space? When you were cutting out the last bezel template in paper, your hands fingers were covering what you were doing. Then, the next thing, you had it all finished in silver so we couldn't see how you did it then either. I just thought maybe if your camera was above you ((and a little more closely zoomed in)) it would be easier for us to see what you're doing.

Thanks for the great videos and your calming voice! I like to make thick bezels--I cut them from 18 gauge sheet--but struggle with getting the size correct the first time. Could you please do a video on thick bezels for round, oval, and square stones? Thank you!
Wow! 18 gauge thick bezels would be challenging. Are you using sterling or fine silver? I’ll look into it:)

Hey Chad, New sub here, I've been binge watching your video's for the past few days and am really enjoying your content. I appreciate that your working on your audio levels as I too, find your musings difficult to hear at times. You call it mumbling, but I have found that you provide a wealth of valuable advice while "mumbling".
I have been wire wrapping jewellery for a few years now as a hobby, and recently took the leap from buying copper coated wire to Sterling Silver, but since discovering your tutorials, I'm really feeling like I want to take the further step into actually soldering and making 'real' jewellery! I have some experience soldering jump rings and doing basic repairs with a small jewelers oxy-aceylene torch. My question for you though, is what should I start with, when buying some sheet product to make this rather intimidating transition?? In sterling, I have the basics for wire, 18-28 gauge round, 18 and 20 gauge square, and some half round, along with the 3 levels of solder, but when it comes to sheet products, so many options feel ovewhelming, so I'm hoping you might offer some suggestions (like gauge and hardness)! I too, will be buying from Rio Grande as it's difficult to find supplies in Canada.
P.S. In my wire wrapping, I tend to try my designs in copper before attempting silver, to avoid expensive losses, would you recommend doing the same with first attempts at soldering and sheet pieces?
Hello Quiet Inspiration! Thanks for the nice comment:). I think it is fine to try some things in copper first if you find that helpful. I would note that being different metals, soldering them may be a little different. The three gauges of sheet I use most often are 26, 22, and 18. I buy pretty much everything dead soft. Hope this helps!
