0:28 those are some real great moves. Not ironic or sarcastic, just some good dancing. Didn't have to go that hard for a background detail of a video game history video, but I am so glad you did anyway!
I will always welcome motion controls mostly because I’m used to using them because I grew up with the wii But still the fact that this technology exists and has evolved to we’re it is now is insane
This is still a weird niche thing for a lot of people, but using a gyroscope for fine aiming in FPS games is pretty great once you get the hang of it. I'm pretty sure the original splatoon basically invented it but the steam controller and steam deck's "touch a capacitive button to activate the gyro" is designed heavily towards gyro aiming. I like it, but I don't use it all the time.
It wasn't really Splatoon that "invented" gyro, but rather the entire 3DS itself. Splatoon is simply the most popular example of gyro. I do agree though. Gyro needs to become an industry standard option in most games. When it comes to objective performance, gyro is better than sticks by a landslide. While it is a pain to setup (in steam at least), it is certainly worth it. It won't be easy, though, with Microsoft refusing to add gyro to their controllers, and there being quite a few people who despise gyro because they believe that "gyro = exhausting waggle". Though, with Nintendo's insistence on gyro, that number is smaller every year.
You missed the whole lineup of SteamVR headsets. There's the vive, vive pro, valve index (often displayed next to the deck) and it was VERY important in the development of VR as they were actually first to implement motion before oculus copied them.
i just want to mention this but some afterburner cabinets actually had you sit in them and moved with your along with your plane, there's also GLOC's 360 cabinet which indeed, did rotate a whole 360.
Wow, seeing the Razer Hydra gave me a flashback. Back in 2015, before VR headsets with motion controllers were even on the market, i knew a guy developing a shooter game using a Oculus Rift DK2 and the razer hydra. It was my first ever "full body" experience in VR, which was something very uncommon at that time.
Including the steam controller and steam deck, but not the Vive or Index which respectively were the first with roomscale tracking and finger tracking?
i wanna learn more about the version of portal shown at 14:50 , portal is one of my fav games ever and it looks super interesting. i’ve always been kinda interested in motion controls for portal because as an avid splatoon player i love motion controlled shooters and i’d wanna see how it’d feel w portal… also the cube stretching mechanic seems so strange but super interesting, does anyone know if it’s an official thing or a mod?
Not mentioning the fact that the Kinect was gonna have quite a lot of features until the fcker was delayed multiple times and removed those features without telling anyone else
XAVIX PORT MENTIONED!!!!! I went down a deep rabbit hole looking into this thing a few months back, when a friend accidentally left one in the bag with the xbox he wanted me to fix. I've since become a diehard xavix fan, its such an interesting little thing
Does anybody remember an old 3d fighting game, like early 2000s maybe where you wore gloves and punched with the gloves and it was motion controls, I have been looking for this for years and I don't know where it is, please help
Growing up in the 90s owning a sega master system then sega Saturn and having 2 Japanese exchange students I've always heard it being pronounced See ga not say ga, the games and advertising always pronounced it see ga. Maybe it's just a accent thing
You forgot valve for vr. Also all headsets use accelerometers and gyros but use other sensors for correction. Also you forgot the Wii’s pointer. People also speculate the main reason for sixaxis not having rumble is patent disputes. Valve also had the steam machine which came out alongside the steam controller. Valve also had a partnership with oculus but when they were bought by Facebook valve partnered with htc for the vive.
I think people intuitively think that video games are for letting us escape into some digital alternate reality, and that's why they think things like motion controls and virtual reality are the future of video games. However the truth is that this isn't the case. The real function of video games is to have something engaging to to with our hands that doesn't involve a lot of physical movement. Motion controls, if anything go against the true function of video games and therefore can't really be the future of video games. The same is also true of VR. If these were to have a future, the best they can be is some other hobby that coexists along side video games. They can never become the main thing video games are because they fulfill a totally different purpose.
I agree. Since the Wii, more console and PC games support motion controls, but they're still not stock nor required for most games today. They might be a nice extra, but that's it.
that’s… not really motion? and light guns aren’t a new thing, they’ve predated the NES zapper, although the way the zapper works is different. the gaming historian has a good video on the nes zapper that has a history of light guns at the start
Wait, you've NEVER played Hang On, or any of it's other Sega derivatives? But you're going to make fun of it's bike? Are you kidding me?!? The Hang On bike should win awards for the DECADES of unbreakable reliable service it provided to kids & and American-sized adults that slammed the living hell out of them while hanging off them in ways that would have broke real bikes! You wouldn't dare keep your Nokia clipped on to your acid washed mom jeans while playing because no Nokia could survive a ride on Hang On!
just cuz i made fun of a thing doesn’t mean i didn’t like it. i made fun of a lot of stuff here yet i do think that they’re all cool and historical. plus, it was just a slapstick cutaway bit more than anything, a joke that means nothing and is just there to garner some laughs

remember the saying: if theres a wii remote and a tv in the same room; something bad is bound to happen to the tv
Nintendo should have made a strap for the remote

The Nintendo Power Glove is so iconic.
Kinda dumb, but iconic.
