KJT93 - With just a little over a mile to go and the chasing group a minute behind these three leaders are not worried about being caught. They know that Tom Boonen (in blue) has the best sprint out of the three. The other two know their only chance to come in first is a pre-emptive attack outside of a sprint distance (300m or so). By moving from side to side they are trying to put themselves in an ideal position to attack, which is from the back 2 of the group. Due to the drafting effects the guy in front is doing more work and this will allow the guys behind him to accelerate quickly by him. You can see Alessandro Ballan (in red for BMC racing) put in one such attempt at 1:27. He realizes he is caught quickly after and slows down and the volley begins again.

Why do they keep shifting sides of the road like that
