Skyrionn funny story about GnomeChompsky 23:35 ... my brother played the entire game thru with the gnome, right, made it to the rocket. Launched the rocket and noticed gnomechompsky still sitting on the ground.. he didnt know you had to physically place him within the rocket. A quicksave, saved him many agonizing hours.
I just kept shooting the gnome as far ahead as I could with the gravity gun and picking it up again could never get it to stay in vehicle for more than fifty yards.
I would love to live in White Forest during it's thriving years. I think the stronghold still is on foot. Hope eventually we learn what hapoened with it and it's residents after both the death of Eli and the change of this in HL: Alyx.
The White Forest Base is one of my favorite locations in the entire Half-Life 2 series. It's in a very beautiful and peaceful forest. I would love to live and work there! I really hope The Combine didn't take over this awesome base following Eli Vance's death otherwise his death as well as some of his fellow resistance heroes' deaths would have been all for nothing.
the cool thing is black mesa is implied to be a former or current (as in joint private venture/ military base given the continued presence of US Armed forces even before the cascade such as the silos and the AH-64 you see on the tram ride) USAF ICBM base as well, in an alternate cold war these two instillations would have been swiping ICBMs at each other. I'm surprised no one ever made a multiplayer mod using both maps with a cold war based asymmetric game (attack and defend style semi stealth game where depending on the maps teams take turns playing as Western or Eastern SF teams trying to sabotage the opposing teams strategic assists against regular security forces of the respective factions with different win conditions and modes (one being destroy the silos before they can launch, one about gathering intelligence as a spy without detection where your by yourself or with one or two other players with very limited firepower against an entire security team (taking pictures, stealing documents, killing HVTs, etc.)) would make an amazing mod TBH
it always caught in my head that the Gman knew about white forest, but him knowing about it never seemed to benefit the combine. then Alyx came around we found out the combine captured him, implying he was not working with them
it’s just pissing how mossman betrayed the resistance and then was like “ you hurt Eli I will now quit the combine”, but anyways very nice vid you always make me learn

I've been binge watching all of your Half Life 2 lore videos. They're all amazing and very interesting. Its really nice to get something like this since Valve never made episode 3 (I'm still pissed off to this day... half life was so popular and amazing how could they not finish it...) I remember playing the final battle with the striders and constantly being launched super high into the air because of the collission bug with strider legs which would cause you to fly upwards really fast if a strider leg stepped on you. That last battle for White Forest was definitely one of the most memorable moments in Episode 2.
i doubt black mesa owned white forest, it’s like black mesa east just eli naming it in memory of black mesa and in turn carrying on the legacy of black mesa and white forest was just a more extensive bunker that they came across. Cuz ya know breen would have known of white forest and instead of the combine following gordon there they would have already known
Makes sense,however Breen wouldn't have guessed the cheap, old and decaying former cold war base that he bought for Black Mesa, was being used by The Resistence
And it makes sense for Black Mesa to expand beyond America, in case they got a crackdown (not such as the cleanup) and needed to flee or save their most sensitive informations and tech, they have a foreign base out of the US's jurisdiction
@@andrewmannson7543 What? The first thing Breen (or at least a rational person) would do is check all the places that Eli can know of and use as a base. It's a basic system of ranking the possible locations value, with the next step being places that Eli doesn't know of (as far as you know) but are still good locations for a base. What you're suggesting is that criminals wouldn't hide with their friends because "it isn't as comfortable as a real hideout".
@@slyseal2091 he probably thought it was destroyed or invested, afterall poetal storms ravaged the earth and destroyed infrustructure around the world. It isn't unlikely to think your old place in Bulgaria is still okay after the many disastrous portal storms. And maybe he did check White Forest but that was long before the Rebels entered or took it over for their base of operations, the rebels weren't always in White Forest

Great video and your screenshots look fantastic. I have The little Rocket Man achievement for Xbox 360 and PC. A pain in the ass to get . My toughest achievement is one free bullet on both also.
This video reminded me that i never managed to beat that final part of Half life 2: Episode Two with the Strider attack, i was good enought with the normal shooting, but shooting these bombs at the striders always took too long and at some point there were always too many at once which made me lose against them. Maybe i'll try that again next weekend.
I tried it again now after over half a year, and i did it after only 3 tries! It was actually very exciting since i started from my latest save where there were only two more waves of striders and there were only three bomb locations which were very close to the rocket left, so i decided to wait at the rocket and fire with everything i still had left with the resistance members which were at the rocket. It got very close at the end when only one strider and one or maybe even two hunters were left because i didn't even know that hunters can shoot the bombs off striders. I had to defeat the hunter with the strongest i had and when i got back to the strider, he was probably just a few steps away from destroying the rocket and i probably had only one more try with the bomb before the strider would get too close to the rocket. After all, i won and i was very happy about it. A funny thing which happened to me is that in the third try when trying to shoot a hunter with a rocket, the rocket circled around it a few times and then i decided to aim at the ground instead of the hunter which finally made the rocket explode. It was kinda funny to see him standing there and waiting until he could at least try to run without getting hit by it.
White Forest was the best part of the game. Played Half-Life 2 eps 2 not to long ago. after all these years, this game is fucking fun to play still. Never did get that Gnome achievement.....someday! John, would you try for the gnome achievement?
That achievement seems difficult but you really just have to keep track of good old Chomski and be patient, got it so so long ago, you should totally get it bro
A physicist (Richard Feynman?) had to make a point that physics is not magic to students, but Half-Life's physics is pure "magic." I world where a gravity gun is pretty much a mage's staff. Teleportation. Aliens using powers to fight off a power wizard. Half-Life borderlines genres of fantasy and science-fiction, but it doesn't do science-fantasy like "He-Man." It is its own genre and I love it :)
I love half-life's version of sci-fi. It sort of has the industrial aesthetic that I love from Star Wars, but the actual science is more reminiscent of superhero movies.
Missile silos are generally only single-use installations. I'm only aware of one at Vandenberg air force base in California, and it doesn't launch conventional scientific payloads. It's exclusively for testing icbm's. It just seems odd to me that black mesa had 2 different facilities that both had expensive reusable underground silos instead of standard launch pads. They're not testing weapon delivery at these places- the whole 'rocket science' thing is pretty basic to them at this point- it's all about payload testing, which can be done on the ground on a test range. They're not as cool looking, but they make way more sense 😅
@@DoctorProph3t Gas masks on combine soldiers and like 3 types of the Hecu in game had no helmet and in op4 their is the bandana , balaclava , and beret which wouldn’t do anything to headcrabs. But a helmet could easily stop head crab beaks.
I don't have the gnome achievement yet but i'm stuck on the part where i'm getting chased by the combine helicopter and the gnome keeps falling out of the car.

Why would he detail every possible piece of property that BM owned, when the Combine are so advanced and overwhelmingly powerful that they can discern that for themselves and trust in those findings? Why would they trust a collaborator at his word? It makes more sense they simply ignored it than Breen didn’t tell them.
I really doubt that Blak Mesa bought the White Forest base it doesn't make sense that a company making deals with the US goverment buys an abandoned base somewhere in eaatern europe.
Since Black Mesa was Gov. owned, maybe they had Black Mesa buy land in the Soviet Union as a semi secret foothold. If Aperture bought up tons of land, i can see Black Mesa doing so as well.
He did mention that City 17 is in America, which would make sense here, although in the context of what is given in the game, doesn't make sense at all. Breen was the director of Black Mesa so he would have known about White Forest, so the combine would have probably searched and maybe even used it as their base, and why would Black Mesa even buy it in the first place, White Forest is located somewhere in eastern europe so it makes no sense for an US Company to buy land in eastern europe, especially one that makes experimenta weaponry.

I have been making a more logical lore for some years now about the White Forest base. Basically, it could have been a ICBM missile. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the base would still be used storing at least 1 missile. When the 7 hour war began if there was a second missile would have been launched to an unknow target (perhaps a portal or a heavy infested area with xenian creatures). A missle was not launched either because the war had ended before it could be launched or something had killed the personnel. The resistance and Magnusson probably had found the base in a search party for a new base or resources. Since building a rocket from scrap in the context of the combine occupied world would be almost impossible, they could have used the missile that was never launched. After all those years the base was in a bad shape, there were rundowned parts such as the secondary silo and some flooded parts due to broken pipes. The missile would be in a bad shape, probably with the warhead broken among other parts, that would explain why the rocket was almost ready in the events of the episode 2, it would have taken years to find suitable replacements for the broken parts, building it from scrap would need machines which would probably be all gone by the time of the events of half life 2
I think originally Gman was meant to be the embodiment of Gabe or the team making the game, because he literally plays all sides. For example he convinced the humans to use the xenian crystal sample he gave them, which in turn resulted in the combine finding earth. However then on the flip side he also has helped Gordon at certain times as well. So it seems he helps both sides, why? Well obviously it's to further the plot of the game, so you can keep having conflict and drama, which is exactly what the creators themselves and Gabe were doing, which is why I think originally the Gman was meant to just be the embodiment of them. However I think with new Valve now, they will probably make him into something specific.
Perhaps in inference, not literally. How would Gabe Newell know of his own importance in Valve during HL1? That doesn’t make sense. Gman acts to drive the narrative, he’s the antagonising force behind all the events giving them purpose and reason. That’s all. Don’t read too far into it.
Random thought: you said we don't know which Eastern European country HL2 takes place in, but there's kind of a hint: the XCCР signs. Iirc Croatia was communist for some time, the Russian word for Croatia is Хорватия (don't know the Croatian name though), and XCCP looks like a standard abbreviation for a soviet state (NCCP, where N is the first letter of the state's name, was used a lot in the USSR). Even though I don't think Croatia was a part of the USSR irl, it still could be in HL's universe.
There were a few theories that it could exist somewhere between Belarus and Ukraine but I didn't want to theorize too much in the video. I like that it's a part of the mystery though!
@@Opanker_ well, there are a lot of places that have these kinds of names but are nowhere near the original location. Odessa would imply the city being near the coast, and imo the New part implies this is a result of more or less significant migration, and Croatia seems to be a plausible option: it's far enough from Odessa to not mistake one for another, yet close enough for the people not to be assimilated, and isn't landlocked (I thought it was for some reason)
@@Skyrionn The developers already hinted City 17 and its surroundings set in place in Bulgaria (Art Director for HL2 is Viktor Antonov, a Bulgarian). However, various places in Eastern Europe (with a small dose of Northern Europe, like Finland) are also present. If you compare City 17 to Sofia, Bulgaria, you will see similarities.

That achievement was tough especially during the vehicle section because it was hard to keep the Gnome on the vehicle.

After some practice it’s not so bad, turns are tricky, but that fucking chopper had me picking it up every 20 seconds.

It feels like we were given about 70% of the pieces of the puzzle and we just needed another game to make sense of it.

If the Resistance taped strap metal to helmets and wore them, how much would successful headcrab attacks drop by?
We saw zombie HECUs and zombines, so safe to say regular helmets and face coverings don’t mean shit against that powerful beak that headcrabs have.

I've heard putting the gnome in between the seats keeps it in there for longer, maybe try that

Breen was the director of Black Mesa so he would have known about White Forest, so the combine would have probably searched and maybe even used it as their base, and why would Black Mesa even buy it in the first place, White Forest is located somewhere in eastern europe so it makes no sense for an US Company to buy land in eastern europe, especially one that makes experimenta weaponry.
@@masonmanfree7804 yeah, but Aperture bought that land on US soil, Black Mesa would is not only puarchaising a base on foreing land, it is also in the Soviet Union, their main rival from the second half of the 20th century
I have been making a more logical lore for some years now about the White Forest base.
Basically, it could have been a ICBM missile. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the base would still be used storing at least 1 missile. When the 7 hour war began if there was a second missile would have been launched to an unknow target (perhaps a portal or a heavy infested area with xenian creatures). A missle was not launched either because the war had ended before it could be launched or something had killed the personnel. The resistance and Magnusson probably had found the base in a search party for a new base or resources. Since building a rocket from scrap in the context of the combine occupied world would be almost impossible, they could have used the missile that was never launched. After all those years the base was in a bad shape, there were rundowned parts such as the secondary silo and some flooded parts due to broken pipes. The missile would be in a bad shape, probably with the warhead broken among other parts, that would explain why the rocket was almost ready in the events of the episode 2, it would have taken years to find suitable replacements for the broken parts, building it from scrap would need machines which would probably be all gone by the time of the events of half life 2

I think originally Gman was meant to be the embodiment of Gabe or the team making the game, because he literally plays all sides. For example he convinced the humans to use the xenian crystal sample he gave them, which in turn resulted in the combine finding earth. However then on the flip side he also has helped Gordon at certain times as well. So it seems he helps both sides, why? Well obviously it's to further the plot of the game, so you can keep having conflict and drama, which is exactly what the creators themselves and Gabe were doing, which is why I think originally the Gman was meant to just be the embodiment of them. However I think with new Valve now, they will probably make him into something specific.
Perhaps in inference, not literally. How would Gabe Newell know of his own importance in Valve during HL1? That doesn’t make sense.
Gman acts to drive the narrative, he’s the antagonising force behind all the events giving them purpose and reason. That’s all. Don’t read too far into it.

Random thought: you said we don't know which Eastern European country HL2 takes place in, but there's kind of a hint: the XCCР signs. Iirc Croatia was communist for some time, the Russian word for Croatia is Хорватия (don't know the Croatian name though), and XCCP looks like a standard abbreviation for a soviet state (NCCP, where N is the first letter of the state's name, was used a lot in the USSR). Even though I don't think Croatia was a part of the USSR irl, it still could be in HL's universe.
There were a few theories that it could exist somewhere between Belarus and Ukraine but I didn't want to theorize too much in the video.
I like that it's a part of the mystery though!

@@Opanker_ well, there are a lot of places that have these kinds of names but are nowhere near the original location. Odessa would imply the city being near the coast, and imo the New part implies this is a result of more or less significant migration, and Croatia seems to be a plausible option: it's far enough from Odessa to not mistake one for another, yet close enough for the people not to be assimilated, and isn't landlocked (I thought it was for some reason)

The developers already hinted City 17 and its surroundings set in place in Bulgaria (Art Director for HL2 is Viktor Antonov, a Bulgarian). However, various places in Eastern Europe (with a small dose of Northern Europe, like Finland) are also present. If you compare City 17 to Sofia, Bulgaria, you will see similarities.
