Love watching younger people fish with vintage lures and have no idea what they are fishing with 😂. That river runt style bait that norm started with isnt a jerkbait 😂 its a shallow crank that you can twitch while reeling at the same time. That one looks like the muskie or pike size one too lol.

I find it so funny some of your remarks about that old equipment. I never really had a problem except for failure because it was wearing out. I remember watching my dad take apart one of the reels I was having trouble with. He told me that the parts were worn out and he couldn’t fix it… go out and get the parts after work tomorrow. He never did. At the time I was too young to understand what it is to work long hours and be a father. But…. I did get my very first face, spitting reel. I remember it was a Shakespeare rod and reel. That evening, I caught my first walleye, casting off from the dock.
Have an old timer, who is always used his equipment all these years, was out there catching fish he would’ve won. It’s hard to fish when you spend all your time taking a backlash out. I do not even try. I know I will have nothing but backlashes..

Old-fashioned reels like that should have braided line only. It will still backlash but nowhere near as much.

I use a 50s rod and reel as my main freshwater setup. Using braided line goes a long way.
Using them older reels isn't that hard. When you cast your thumb should follow the line. If there's no line guide your thumb is the guide.
31:00 looks like the reel is designed to be reeled in while level. The sideways reeling and jigging could be causing the problems but maybe im wrong. But you can see the reel all up to one side.
It's not a levelwind, you have to physically guide the line back in evenly as you reel in.
"Best" rod I ever had was a 12 buck Diawa combo I got at Dick's back in the day. Caught more fish on that thing than any other rod ive owned. Ended up giving it away to a special needs kid that used to go fishing with us.
Norm... you need to stop the lure while it's in the air with your thumb. If you let it hit the water first you get the backlash. It's an easy fix.
Nah, continue fishing the entire day doing the exact same thing and spend a couple hours messing with tangled lines.

i really like this concept, but at least you should use new hooks on old baits, because looks like old hooks are rusty which could potentialy make fish sick and just make it suffer till painful death, but other than that i loved this video

It was more like cloth line. Still hard to cast but didn't backlash as much as mono

What kind of challenge is this.the host goes all up to date and gives guest 100 year old tackle and a p.o.s.antique reel.this wasn't a challenge or a competition.this was a wasted day in norms short life.even kickin their bass host would have at least used the old reel.disappointed in u fletch.

Norm complained about the classic reel not having a line guide but that model reel should have one. He is missing a piece. That's why he is getting so many backlashes and the line seems to constantly build up on one end of the spool.
It's easy to say hey Norm you have to thumb (feather the spool) with those old reels. It just takes practice like anything else. Well practice and about 100,000 yards of line 😆

Do this challenge with somebody who's more familiar with the old tackle or let somebody get used to it. That would make it a fair head-to-head

I'm a vintage fishing tackle collector, if ya really wasted to go full old school you should have put dacron on the reel
It looks like a pflueger supreme no 1537 what test dacron would you recomend. I am currently using shimano 15 lb test and have backlash on every other cast.

I love using old wooden lures. There's a reason why the names are famous. Just a 1/2 hr ago, I was changing the hooks on a large creek chub. I hope to use it today. I caught fish on it yrs ago.

I used to want an vintage fishing tackle collection. I have it now. What I once bought new is now vintage. That real reminds me of my old Pflueger Summit.
The trick with those old level winds is to keep your thumb on the line the whole time when you're casting.
You are essential supposed to be the back lash control.
I learned on an old year like that 🤣

Really dig the vid, guys. I still use my gear from the 60s-80s, though folks have given me newer stuff, and I have some of my dad's gear 40s-60s. My spinners are Mitchell 300's, 308, 389 and my standard aka "baitcasters" are Penn, Pflueger, and Abu Garcia. Get into the lures I've picked up over the decades and have as old as 1890s up through the 70s. How about tossing a Midnight Lures#1 or a Paw Paw Watta Frog? Nineteen rods and 8 tackle boxes with a 6 drawer dresser of gear for all the extras. BTW, my 2 Harleys are a 57 Sportster ( first year of Ironhead) and a 91 Electra Glide Ultra Classic with a sidecar. Us old farts got all the cool stuff LOL
Im 71 and I have a rod the my grandpa said belonged to his grandpa and so on. I took it in a shop and they say its at least 400 years old it might function but I have it locked on display bc I don’t want to harm it

You should make a video where you and maybe some others fish with lures that aren't lures, or "homemade" lures....ex. Gummy worms, candy, a small rubber tube wire, the pepsi logo on can, a literal spoon, lol someone told me they've fished with pepto bizmal tablets and have caught a fish ! maybe not to that extent ha! but It would be cool to see a similar video !

JUST SO EVERYBODY KNOWS yelling in a boat while fishing scares away all the smart fish
Guys, I want to learn something. I'm from Poland and baitcasters are not popular here at all, so I have "normal" reels on all my rods. I'm right handed, and I have crank on the left side, as everyone else, so I can hold my rod with the right hand all the time. On the other side I see lots of videos from US, where people use bait casters and you cast with right hand and then switch to left hand. Why is that? That looks odd to me 😅 Moreover, I get the advantage of baitcasters when you use huge baits on the sea, or hunting for musky, but why to use it for bass / perch? Reel produces no resistance so you can cast 5g lures with no problem and there's no risk of backlash. Before shitstorm starts, I don't want to argue, I just want someone to explain :D
I’m from the US and grew up just using a traditional open face reel however as I got better I drew to bait casters due to the feel I like how the reels feel and the rods i combo with the bait casters give me more control over my bait. I can cast further and can guide my aim better. Working the baits in the water with the small eyelets on the rod helps me to work the baits and get the movement I want. I hope this help I’m not the greatest at explaining
