I'm currently in the process of buying my first kilt (tartan utility kilt) for the upcoming Renaissance festival. I've always been known as the guy who wears vests and bowties every day and I'm seriously thinking about making the kilt part of my daily wardrobe. I'm really excited to give it a try
Don't forget the kilt hose. I've purchased them for $10 to $35 per pair, and a change in color can really affect the look of an outfit. Used day sporrans (in black and brown) can be purchased on eBay for very reasonable prices. Just make certain that they were made in Scotland (to ensure quality construction) and that they're adult-sized (to avoid getting one that's comically small).
Agree. Right colour hose pulls/tones it all in. Charcoal goes with most, white is universally clashing, bright and awful. Yea, I also bought a tiny "boys" sporran by mistake once, makes a nice purse? Maybe!
A few PV kilts around 4 helps, then decent ones for best / events. Tweed waistcoats, jackets, regular Jersey or sweater, hose or shooting socks, boots or shoes 👞 and a thick skin, as there will be lots of "where's your bagpipes?" Questions or snarky "nice skirt" from less cultured folk 🤓
When they ask "where's your bagpipes?" Tell them, under my kilt, and when they ask "what are you wearing under there?" Tell them "your wife's lipstick"
I have four utili-kilts that I rotate. Two are tartaned, one is a pure navy blue, and one is camouflaged. I basically wear a kilt every day (unless I am motorcycling, obviously). I wear basic shirts, t-shirts, henley's, and even button down, but no patterns, except with the navy kilt. I normally just wear sandals. And since they are utili-kilts, I don't need a sporran.
Purple Shirt Thursday is a thing. (It means you disagree with management, but you're here anyway.) Long explanation, but observed by many. Remember: Thursday is Thor's Day.
I can't wear a kilt everyday as it's not practical for my job, but I like to kilt up in my Cornish national kilt on the weekends. I usually wear mine with some sort of punk t shirt and combat boots with a peaky blinder hat and just a plain sporran. Also just got a Cornish hunting tartan kilt as I wanted more (definitely caught the bug now) and will be taking that one for a test drive later.
For casual I think it's fine to mix leathers, ie. belt, sporran, buckles, shoes as long as it's a mix of black/brown. Not something anyone would pick up on. Maybe for formal it would be different. Otherwise agree. Plain colour T shirt, kilt, tweed jacket is a nice, easy casual look for moderate temperatures.
I wear mine a couple times a week. I usually just wear my tartan Utility kilt. I like to change up the top and socks. So far I have 1 day sporran, and it's brown since most of the time the things I go to are casual. I have 2 pairs of kilt hose and flashes, but I usually don't have an opertunity to wear them.
I wear a kilt pretty much every day except during the New England winters (call me a "wimp" if you will but I wear pants or Clan Lamont trews when there is snow on the ground). I own 9 kilts of different tartans - Clan Lamont Ancient (1 wool, 1 utilikilt), Clan Lamont Modern, Irish National, Royal Stuart, Pride of Scotland, Saint Patrick, New World Celts and a solid Black (5 are utilikilts) but they have been acquired over a 7 year period and not purchased all at the same time. I have 2 vests, three sporrans (my normal day one is a brown leather Rob Roy) and an assortment of kilt socks (black, dark navy blue, green, white). For formal occasions I have an black Argyll suit jacket and matching vest and wear a lace jabot in lieu of a tie. Headgear is either a flat cap or a black Tam with the Clan Lamont crest badge. And, yes, I am known all over my small Cape Cod town as "the guy in a kilt".
I wonder whether the comments here will be any different to the ones published when this clip first came out on 25 may 2022 .... (doubled holds better, as they say).
I'm not a big guy normal frame but bigger then most I feel kilts give me more room and comfort for my leg Idk pants create an uncomfortable bulge Also I like that my bulge isn't just out there with kilts It's fits rights to my daily comforts I'd really would like to make kilts more common
I was about to ask this same question! Following for an answer.....I only have a black cotton Utilikilt at the moment and wanting to get my Clan MacDougall tartan in ancient & modern as well. Got to figure out a way to wear it while riding my motorcycle somehow???
I spend the majority of my time in SWFL and I have one of theirs. I even competed in it when most athletes use others. My Cousin has bought from a couple companies and recommended them to me. I'm super happy with mine and have worn it once every couple weeks.
You could start with one of their PV kilts and go from there. I'm from Louisiana, so we have a similar climate. I'd limit wool kilts to 13oz cloth for most of the year, but you could try 16oz during the coolest weeks of the year. I just can't say how much wear you'd get out of it during the year in our subtropical climate. Having said that, look how many campaigns the Scottish Regiments in the British Army conducted in the Middle East over the years.
As a proud Scot, the ONLY thing you need to make the transition, is CONFIDENCE. Forget all the “rules” youve heard or been told, rules were brought in to minimise the daily wearing of a kilt. As for “accessories” minimum a belt to hold a sporran, but its not even needed, a sporran is just a fancy for a pouch so really, any belt mounted pouch would give you the same look and feeling. However, since you wont have any pockets, a pouch of some sort would be really useful, unless you want to carry a small backpack. But NEVER sacrifice money that could be used for daily survival, just to fill a wardrobe, if all you have is 1 kilt, and you want to be a full time kilt wearer, just do it! There was a time in history where people could maybe only afford 1 kilt. NEVER worry about what type of tartan it is either, before the clans it used to be, that the colours on a kilt were just a result of the natural materials that were available. If you like the colour of the blackwatch tartan, or Cameron tartan, whether it be, modern, ancient or hunting. It doesnt matter, wear what you like and wear it with pride! And Like i said, the only thing you NEED, is confidence.
I would never wear a kilt daily. I look at it as a nice special piece of clothing. I'd find it insulting to wear to the grocery store, that's a bit naff. I wear black watch in pipe band. Hunting menzies, which is my own on special occasions.
You can, think Highland Regiments on service, that said an ankle height boot is closer to the WWII Ammo Boot. I have seen knee high moccasins, pirate boots and even cowboy boots (EWWWWWWWWW) These days a lot of the Victorian standards are in the past, especially in the States. I have worn the kilt with Ammo boots and puttees, khaki shirt and the Tam O' Shanter bonnet. Try it out, just remember it's Highland Dress not a costume. Cheers, mate.
I'd say it depends on your local climate. Hotter climate, you might start with a PV kilt. Moderate climate, a 13oz wool kilt. Cooler climate, consider 16oz wool. But it also depends on your own temperature. If you tend to be a bit hot natured, PV and 13oz wool might be more comfortable. If you run cooler 16oz may work for you. Otherwise, go with what you like and adjust from there.
the only true kilt is like the one in the background of your video the one in red plaid ,the modern kilts are not in my opinion,,those are the bastardized english version of the scottish irish welsh clans
