On the DVD commentary, the director Sam Mendes mentions how much trouble they had editing this scene because he felt it just didn't work properly....and then it came to him to just let Thomas Newman's score play over everything and to cut out all of the sound effects until Sullivan confronted Rooney.
    And it worked perfectly.

Actually the action and the cinematography, the dramaturgy and everything else leading up to and going into each moment on screen says rather a lot. The act of speaking is not priviliged in cinema and the virtuous line is never overly obvious and does not explain subtext but leaves space for the rest to do it's thing.

    True story about Paul Newman:
When I was 12 I wrote him a letter asking to interview him. I was a chronically ill kid and wanted to talk to him about his charity work for a school project I had. 2 weeks go by and I come home from dinner one night and there’s a message waiting for me on our answering machine. It was his secretary. She wanted to tell me how sorry he was that he couldn’t be interviewed by me because he was filming this movie but that he thanked me for my interest and support and told me to stay strong through my illnesses. The fact that he even took 2 minutes out of his schedule to do that for me is something I’ll NEVER forget.

His last line “I’m glad it’s you” has a double meaning. First, it’s saying that I’d rather be taken out by you than a stranger. Also, this was Paul Newman passing the torch to Tom Hanks.

+Jiggley Krowzer What's more important than the revenge on Connor or John Rooney, is the understanding that once the boss (Newman) is killed, there is no more value in eliminating Mike Sullivan's son. Nobody cares if the kid lives or dies after that. Connor Rooney was going to kill Mike Jr... with John Rooney's blessing(publicly). That principle was set in stone as long as John Rooney lived.
Sullivan knew that killing Rooney Sr. would preserve the life of his son, because nobody would support Connor in the event of the boss dying.
Maguire's madness was not that he killed for money, but that he killed for passion. He knew there wasn't any value in killing Mike Sullivan, other than to simply get payback for taking that bullet. Nitti did call in the contract, but the essence of completing the contract was nullified once the Rooney's bit the dust. Maguire just wanted to ice him to satisfy the score.

    • @cbcdesign001

...with John Rooney's blessing? John Rooney would never sanction the killing of Mikes son or give Connor his blessing to kill him either. He made that perfectly clear when Frank Nitti asked about the boy. Connor on the hand was a different matter and Mike had to kill John simply so he had unfettered access to Connor whom he could then kill to
      preserve his sons life.

The book is actually quite good. But as for this being a bad movie... if you go into this movie thinking it is supposed to be realistic and or perfect it is wrong, it was made with artistic purpose in mind, everything has a point, a message, even here, the idea isn't that, "oh in reality they would have gotten to cover" the point is to show the end of Paul Newman's character with violence keeping with the theme of violence in the movie.

Newan, Hanks, Craig, were all incredible, as was Stanley Tucci who had maybe 10 minutes of screen time. The cinematography was incredible, and I love how Sam Mendes played music over the gunfire. It made the scene so much more powerful.

Award shows like the Oscars are determined by rich old leftist cucks who can only give out so many awards to so many people. Ultimately what matters the most is how you feel about the movie, not what they feel about it in their limited perspective.

The thing that's so emotional in this scene is that Tom Hanks' character[Michael] knew that Paul Newman's[John] was not to blame, it was John's son. But he would not just hand him over to be murdered no matter how bad he screwed up. And Michael would have done the same thing for his son, but he had to do what he had to even though he considered John a father.
The look in both Tom Hanks & Paul Newman's eyes right before the trigger is pulled... wow!
You rarely see acting like that!
    And also , that line
    " I'm glad it's you "
So powerful to think that he accepted and maybe even welcomed this. To go out by the hands of the person he respected the most, and not shot in the back by some punk kid.

One of the finest filmed and most powerfully compelling scenes in movie history.
For everything about it was masterfully rendered, and tied in together with this exquisite grace, the rainy, atmospheric environment, the sublime and dreamy cinematography, the beautiful and perfect lighting, the soulful music steeped in melancholic inevitability and all- consuming resignation (and which captures the emotion and mood of the moment flawlessly, with this sadly dramatic touch), the camera angles and screen shots, and the acting, most especially that of Paul Newman, as he nailed the hopelessness of his situation along with the feelings of deep resignation and sadness that his character would have no doubt felt, nailing it all with this incredible and unforgettable poignancy, along with this sense of guilty yet unwavering dignity, as it was all stamped clearly upon his features, most especially the sadness of it all (with no one else but himself to blame, something that he had made peace with, displayed marvelously and lamentably by Paul Newman).
Oscar worthy, and quite possibly his finest hour (in the very twilight of the twilight of his career, no less).
Yes, this scene was artistic and cinematic perfection, amazingly revealing and as powerfully captivating as any scene in movie history. The Greatest Scene in the Greatest Irish Mob movie ever🇺🇸🇨🇮🇺🇸🇨🇮🇺🇸🇨🇮🇺🇸🇨🇮🇺🇸🇨🇮💚💚💚

I’ve thought about this as well. Two things: He was shooting in semi-auto burst, not full auto. Makes a HUGE difference. Another thing…and this was demonstrated throughout the movie. It was his weapon of choice. You’d be surprised how accurate a person can get, even with a fully automatic weapon, when they constantly use it. I love HK Pistols. With my 45 USP, I can group around the bullseye at 25 yards consistently. But I’ve had that pistol 13 years and I’ve probably put 5,000 rounds through it. With my buddy’s Ed Brown, which I’d consider a comparably accurate pistol of the same caliber, I’m not half as good. The same buddy can hit anything, on the move, up to 50 yards with his semi auto AK. I’ve read about WWII Vets becoming crack shots from the hip with BARs. Same with Vietnam Vets and M16’s.

It's objectively wrong to say this isn't one of the greatest scenes in cinema history. Utterly profound!

“Don’t push a reasonable man to do unreasonable things.” Is what I would describe this movie

The cinematography in this film are as good as it gets. The atmosphere and visuals are absolutely amazing. It’s too bad the cinematographer, Conrad L. Hall, passed away before he was able to receive his Academy Award.

My favorite scene in all of cinematography. The way it’s shot, scored, and put together. Violent gunfire underneath a beautiful piece of music. The way it’s cut off and resumes after the only dialogue is muttered before the burst of automatic fire shatters the score... And the way Sullivan just appears out of the shadows... Perfect... Masterwork of lighting...
