    Watch or myth? Created in 1963, the ROLEX Cosmograph (Daytona) has long since become more than a timepiece - it is an icon. Its name, inextricably linked with the famous circuit of Daytona Beach, Florida, embodies the ties between Rolex and motor sport, in particular the world’s greatest endurance races. In 1963, Rolex launched a new-generation tool watch: the Cosmograph, dedicated to professional racing drivers. The singular name invented by Rolex immediately marked it out as a very different new model. The counters stood out clearly on the dial thanks to their strongly contrasting colour, black on a light-coloured dial or a light colour on a black dial. The tachymetric scale - allowing average speeds over a given distance to be measured using the chronograph seconds hand - was moved from the dial to the bezel. Dictated by functional considerations, these features made the chronograph far more legible - one of the challenges of the time. They also gave the watch a technical and sporty look, making it instantly recognizable, and placed the Cosmograph firmly among the Professional watches - a category created by ROLEX 10 years earlier, in 1953 - such as the Explorer, dedicated to explorers and mountaineers, or the Submariner, specially designed for deep-sea diving. An additional inscription - Daytona - appeared on some dials during the new ROLEX chronograph’s early years. Initially limited to watches for the US market, it was most probably added at the request of the ROLEX affiliate in the United States to mark the brand’s link, as Official Timepiece, with the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, and to anchor the model in the world of motor racing. The name gradually began to appear on every Cosmograph dial, finally taking on its current curved shape in red lettering above the counter at 6 o’clock.
    2023 the ROLEX Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona reinvented...
    The year 2023 marks a new milestone in the evolution of the Cosmograph Daytona. Its dial displays new graphic balance with resized and restyled hour markers and counter rings. Subtle combinations of colours and finishes accentuate the contrast between the dial background and the counters and/or their rings, bringing even greater visual harmony and a more modern demeanour to the face of the watch. Along the sides of its redesigned Oyster case, graceful lines of light are elegantly reflected. On versions with a Cerachrom bezel in ceramic, the bezel is edged with a fine band of the same metal as the middle case.
    The ROLEX Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona is now equipped with calibre 4131. This new chronograph movement, entirely developed and manufactured by ROLEX, is an evolution of calibre 4130. Unveiled in 2023, it incorporates a number of the major innovations that Rolex has brought to its movements, including the Chronergy escapement to, among other purposes, reduce energy loss, Paraflex shock absorbers to protect the heart of the movement, and an optimized ball bearing to enhance self-winding. Calibre 4131 also features a new aesthetic for the brand: a cut- out oscillating weight and, on the bridges, an exclusive Rolex Côtes de Genève decoration - a reinterpretation of an iconic finishing in traditional Swiss watchmaking.
    On the version in 950 platinum, recognizable by its ice blue dial, the oscillating weight is made from 18 ct yellow gold and is visible to the wearer through the transparent case back in sapphire - a first for the Oyster Perpetual collection. 950 platinum, considered the noblest of metals, is striking for its unique luminosity. This rare and precious metal is among the densest and most difficult to work, and is characterized by its exceptional corrosion resistance. ROLEX uses only 2 950 platinum, an alloy consisting of 950 ‰ platinum and a specific dose of ruthenium, with meticulous finishing in-house.

    Great Video. 45 years ago I bought my FIRST Rolex. A Submariner for $260.00. At that time a good friend told me that Rolex's are a great investment you can enjoy wearing. He suggested I buy one every year for myself for Xmas. For 25 years I followed his advise. As for today prices and avilability, if you really want it spend a few dollars more to get your DREAM watch. Life is too short.

    As an enthusiast, I love the fact that you downplay the investment side of this hobby. There are too many grubby little urchins making our hobby something which is becoming out of reach to those whom are interested in the Rolex Atelier.       Even if I wanted to make some money off my watches I absolutely HATE the feeling of selling a watch. I have a Breitling navatimer. A omega speedmaster. A Rolex Submariner and a Daytona. I had a batgirl GMT which I sold and I’ve never gotten over the depression of selling that watch

      Rolex could upgrade its movement to 5 Hz/36.000 A/h … then the central second hand would swipe over the dial in the speed of 1/10 of a second… then the graduation is correct again as it is… you count left, on and right of every dot and start all over again 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10… A reading of 1/10 of a second from the dial would be the result!

    For me the Daytona is the most iconic men’s sportswatch out there.
    Yes there I said it. I wouldn’t go swimming with a royal oak or mtbiking with a 5711.
    This watch … no problem.
    For me the monoblock ceramic 116500 with the asymetric lugs as a design element feels more special.
    That was a short run for the monoblock. 😢 in my opinion it looks better and will age better.
    Other than that still the best watch.

    I love the new bezel, lugs and case of the daytona! It's simply stunning! Also, I love your recommendation about the three counting dots on the dials, you are so right! Also I support what you say about not paying above retail. I was able to get a 41mm green bezel submariner from the largest AD in my country with minimum wait and no previous purchase history. How I did it? By trying to explain the head of the AD my genuine passion for the watch, its features and history and be a very good listener at the same time. Because I am relatively young in age, when I went to collect the watch, the staff initially believed I am going to flip it. However, as I use to visit them and have a chat, they realised I am a true passionate owner. So I support your saying 100%. Well done on the video!!!

      Thanks for your kind feedback! I once in Geneva explained exactly this to Philippe Stern… he wouldn’t want to change the dots due to the design of the dials. Thierry Stern his son does though. So you will always find the correct graduation on chronographs that Thierry created together with his team…

    What an extremely helpful comparison @ 7:26 in comparing the differences between the old PLATINUM model vs the old STEEL model (or even new platinum vs new steel model) instead of comparing the old platinum model vs the new platinum model or the old steel model vs the new steel model. After all, there's no big gap in prices between the two :)
    What a sound advise too @10:58 for those who are willing and able to buy a particular Rolex model to "JUST FORGET IT AND BUY SOMETHING ELSE" because "THERE WILL BE ONE DAY WHERE YOU WILL GET YOUR WATCH FOR THE REGULAR PRICE because this crazy market will break down sooner or later" --- great insight, after all, we are all immortals and can wait forever plus we all have connections in the watch world and we know the CEOs and heads of all watch brands who are all on our speed dial who we can easily call anytime for allocation :)

    Excellent explaination on the differences between the variance. NEVER gonna buy from the backdoor ADs and from the Grey market. Since I couldn't buy a new Rolex, I diverted to Chopard AE Maritime Blue and the Zenith Chronomaster Sport 2 tone. 🎉

    I have the pre-ceramic black dial Daytona and don't have an urge to upgrade it. Its got its own charm and still gives you the Daytona experience.
    But these 2023 iteration are stunning for sure

    I think the 116500LN with full ceramic will be a very collectible watch… it’s been produced a few years considering the Covid crisis and it’s been a VERY difficult reference to get, the newer one beeing easier to produce and having the benefits of the new factory, my AD told me they will be more produced as Rolex plan to deliver about twice the number of the new reference compared to previous… will still be only 20 watches a year for this very well installed historic AD….! Only 10 in my fav color. Funny it was black for the 116500 but white for the newest 😂 BTW I only have a GMT Pepsi for now and LOVE that model

      Then hopefully your AD is not greedy and he will sell these watches to really interested customers - aka watch aficionados - and not deliver them through flippers to grey/parallel markets and therewith hoping he can earn a premium on each "sold" Rolex ...     What is your opinion on the Rolex CPO program which us done only through authorized dealer? They also list the prices over retail?

      This is a program of BUCHERER so far and does not make any sense at all… it aims to help to bring unsold Rolex watches from the parallel markets after three years back to the “sources”. Don’t forget that there are up to two million new and unsold Rolex watches in the parallel markets… These CPO prices are even higher than elsewhere and the guarantee you get is just cosmetic … a nice marketing action IMHO though…

      No, we are „only“ comparing steel and platinum … both the former version… with the Stress you have filming all the new watches this is something that must be done one day later this year…

    Agree about the minor indexes. They should be 1/4 second ticks. My CdV has 1/3 seconds for its 3 Hz movement and it's very nice to see it stop right on the indexes.

      It is 1/8th of a second the central second swipes over the dial and not 1/5 th... If you want to make a reading as it is you can't... I know a majority doesn't even care, but we are WatchAdvisor...

    Last year this channel had the best coverage of Rolex releases. Hands on of every piece before anyone else. This year you guys have nothing, just stock photos 2 weeks later. What happened?

      Offered time for filming was very limited and we therefore decided to film all the different novelties instead of showing all details ... Maybe you haven't seen it, but the majority of excellent pictures are still ours... Rolex only provided us one working sample, the platinum one, to film... Look close and you will see that the stock photos are limited to the historic ones and the calibre 4131... I hope you have seen the entire video meanwhile ... share some thoughts with us if you wish...

    I've been saying the same thing since the 3861 Speedmaster came out, Rolex needs to change the dial graduations. Until then, the modern Daytona will be a show watch, not a tool watch.

      Concerning Patek Philippe the situation is the following: Once during the launch of a new chronograph I explained that issue to father Philippe and son Thierry Stern... Philippe did not want to change the look of his dials (yes the look!), but Thierry did and does. So today all chronographs done by Thierry feature 3 dots, the ones going back to Philippe Stern do still feature 4 ...

    Much agree about the second markings for the chrono. Good spot. The latest Moonwatch got this right. Thanks for another excellent and informative video. I agree not to support the grey market. I have noted my interest at an AD but don't mind if they never come through. There are other great watches out there!

      ​@@WatchAdvisor Thanks for asking. I still have a soft spot for the Longines Tuxedo 3-hand. I watched your review 2 years ago and mentioned it would be nice if it was offered in manual wind! Other watches I like are the Rolex 1908, Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 38mm with terra cotta dial, and the Moonwatch. I also quite like the champagne dial Grand Seikos like the quartz SBGX263.

      ⁠​⁠@@WatchAdvisor It does makes sense when it comes to the chronograph seconds accuracy of 8 beats per second, however, if the markings in between the hour markers are changed to 3 stripes instead of 4 stripes, we would have trouble reading the precise minute of the time, which to me is definitely more important than the more precise chronograph seconds.

    Alexander, I agree with you about the three lines vs four between seconds. However, in my opinion, they should’ve also taken the opportunity to go back to the vintage dial design/aesthetics, perhaps recreating the Big Red and Paul Newman dials with modern manufacturing and materials…and add the Glidelock clasp for Pete’s sake! They could even lume the markers and numbers on the ceramic bezel insert. Altogether, that would be the ultimate.

      There is always room for improvements/changes … thanks for sharing! Technical things will happen the sooner or later, but Rolex bringing back one of these iconic dials… that would be it… also think about the rings on the outer side of the bezel, they could color them too…

    Great review as usual! I’m glad they sort out the asymmetrical lugs and the thinner ring round the subdials makes the dial face looks bigger! I’m not a great fan of the steel ring round the ceramic bezel on the stainless steel or platinum models but somehow it seems to work on the gold models!

    Great video, but wish there were labels to help distinguish old vs. new watch and also maybe some arrows to point to the areas of where changes were made to be more precise.     As soon as I bought my steel Daytona, I was disappointed to discern the lugs on the right were slimmer than those on the left. The response from Rolex UK was their cliche: They are within our tolerance.

      @@garyboyle695 only way to increase legibility is to increase case but it reduce versatility. Omega speedmaster at 42 and the new Grand Seiko tentagraph are phenomenal but their large. I really love the Grand Seiko it’s incredible!!!

    Firstly, thanks for the review. They are nice indeed watches. But honestly due to the flippers and back door selling, it is utterly impossible to get one at msrp. I went through 30 Rolex ADs in Hong Kong and not even one Daytona for sale. Waiting for a Daytona is just not logical anymore. If you can’t get it, then buy something else or be happy with your money 😂.

    On the discontinued 1165xx Daytonas SS YG and TT all share the same asymmetrical, thin case, with curves and flush endlinks. All the full bracelets WG RG and Platona share the same symetrical, beefier case with larger crownguards and endlinks that are not flush. All the OF models share a similar case than full metal RG WG and PT.

    Excellent presentation. Tasteful and logical evolution. Interesting history. But almost impossible to get from an AD unless you have a large value previous purchase history. Plus - try wearing these models in the usual crime hotspots around the world (start with London) and you’ll need security guards. Not just the most sought after Rolex with enthusiasts but criminals alike.

    I enjoyed a lot your presentation but I just disagree about Rolex Price Tag. Those watches are overrated and I have a DJ 36mm and DD YG from better times now it’s almost impossible to get certain models and this will be a constant with this brand till don’t know when. Talking mass produced chronographs I prefer Zenith and Speedy Moonwatch. Thanks for such a great quality in your reviews. I will save some money for an IWC Doppelgraph instead of this new Daytona. Some years before Rolex asked to Cancun AD to get back all the SS Sport watches and mysteriously Rolex wait list started and price went very high.     The 126500 has slab-like sides and is reminiscent of Tudor. You will notice that Rolex rarely lets you get a glimpse of that angle in their press photos. The prior version is much nicer. Cheers!

    Alex, i agree with you that we should not buy from grey but on the other hand, I believe that this crazy condition wont end soon. And probably wont end forever, and become a new normal.. i heard Rolex will start to produce more watches in 2029 when new factory run, so thats probably our only chance. But are you sure that Rolex themself do not want this condition to keep going?? If they do, then a new factory will not make much different.

    "Rolex just wanted to sell a good chronograph for timing sport activities or races" and called it Cosmograph? That happened immediately after Breitling's Navitimer Cosmonaute made it to outer space and while Omega's Speedmaster was getting tested and approved by NASA for their space program. Also, it would not hurt to do some research on how Rolex was referring to the first reference 6239 as Le Mans. It didn't stick, and they tried again with Daytona. Anyway, nobody wanted those watches at the time and thus, Rolex made very few of them - that's why they are so rare.

    In the US you can’t get a Daytona. My AD said they don’t even keep a list for the Daytona. I got a Gold Daytona for just over list from a secondary market . Almost list price. So how do you get a Daytona when your AD says they only get 1 every 3-5 years

    It is nice you give review about the Daytonas, but in terms of advising people not to buy from grey market, that’s just not right because people can do what they want.

    Lots of talk about new bling, does nobody really know that the Rolex Daytona chronograph was the favourite personal wrist watch of some Apollo-era NASA astronauts?
    ROLEX still is the watch brand with the most models flown-in-space (Datejust, GMT-master, Submariner, Sea Dweller... Rolex Daytona 6263 was flown onboard Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1989 !

      The Rolex watches are popular around the globe and certain models of course do very much define your status... But one must be very careful, since too many good fakes are around and not every Rolex on a wrist is real one...
