  • Technology is changing the world at a more rapid pace than ever. But we remain stuck following a social contract that was written for the industrial era, leading us to make work, life and policy decisions that don't match today's reality. Diplomat, author, and innovation researcher Alec Ross argues that it's time to develop a new social contract written for the information age - which will determine the future we live in.
Alec Ross is one of America’s leading experts on innovation. He is currently a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Johns Hopkins University and the author of the New York Times bestseller The Industries of the Future. Alec Ross recently served for four year as Senior Advisor for Innovation to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a role created for him by Secretary Clinton to maximize the potential of technology and innovation in service of America’s diplomatic agenda.

It’s now the most haunting visions of our future, like THX 1138, A Clockwork Orange, Blade Runner, Gattaca and Anon, that help to raise my awareness most. Thank you, Alec.

Hopefully one day, we will boldly go where no one has gone before.

People who ask this question don't really know Star Trek. The world was in a post-apocalyptic state when Cochrane broke the speed of light and made contact with the Vulcans.

I imagine that the Mirror Universe version of Earth in the 24th century actually closely resembles Mad Max: A desperate scramble for resources and power, with little regard for the safety and well being of others.

I'm betting it will be both. If you look into the lore of Star Trek, you'll learn that _it _*_was_*_ both._
Humanity managed to achieve a post-scarcity society because of events that happened in the 21st century that effectively reset the course of human civilization. The Eugenics War, World War III, and alien first contact (and partial intervention). Our two civilizations cannot be compared politically, nor economically, nor socially because they had started in fundamentally different ways, Star Trek's being built from scratch, off of the rubble and knowledge of ours.
TL:DR, Humanity in Star Trek is not a direct development of our own at all.
Best way to describe it is a "New Game+"

Liked the quote, good talk but have to ask, is "bad" an ungood word now or is that just coincidence?

Wow, just as valid now as 7 years ago... thank you. Although since we failed to back then - start this afternoon. Start a slight, but steadily increasing carbon tax on every carbon fuel - exempt it for anything used to manufacture or deploy clean energy systems. While were at it, transform all the fossil fuel industries into utilities. Too difficult?? Ok try something else. Only don't wait 10 years to start it... cause that would be Mad Max for sure.

Sorry in advance for being sarcastic.
I have seen a few TEDx speeches - and still cannot escape the thought that they are like a stand-up evening (a guy stands on a podium, talks and shines his wits and wisdom), with only one exception.
    Stand-up evenings are entertaining.
TEDx speeches are _f*cking boring_. Most of the stuff they dwell on usually so trivial that they cross every person passed a SAT exam's mind...
