  • Electroforming is the process by which a thin copper veneer is added to a non-metallic object by means of electricity and a conductive solution.
Honestly, I understand how it works, it still feels like actual magic. At least low-level alchemy. Also, it's fun and quite doable in a small shop.

So if you make a negative mold of something interesting, cast a positive out of resin, electroplate it, then cast that inside a resin cube, it would be an object that is almost 100% resin throughout, except for the thin amount of paint/copper which be the only thing you would see.

  • @thethoughtemporium

Once you've got a copper layer on there, you can then electroplate on top of it with lots of other metals. So the next step could be to do a light gold plating on top. Maybe electroform a chocolate coin, then gold plate it to make real gold chocolate coins just for fun. Or it'll just make parts like this necklace look even more incredible.
If you do an object that can take a fair bit of heat, you can copper electroform, then chemically coat it in zinc, and then if you heat the object the two metals will mix together to form brass directly on the thing and give a golden color. Used to do that to quarters for fun. Basically just works on metal parts though because of the heat required.

  • @maxximumb

Peter, if the packing peanut has a small hole in the copper, you could dissolve out the polystyrene with acetone, leaving it hollow.
Hmmm, maybe make a shape in polystyrene, coat with conductive paint, but leave holes in the paint, so once it's electro-formed and the polystyrene is dissolved out, you end up with a hollow form that you can see is hollow.
Thanks for a fun video and keep up the magic.

Cool and project! If you coat the wood with resin and finish it glossy before painting and then plate for a long time you should be able to carefully polish the metal surface if you want to get that sort of look.
I'm not 100% sure but I think it could plate even without the electricity. The copper solution will do that at high enough concentration. It's called electroless plating if I'm not mistaken. It still need the conductive surface. I'm actually experimenting with this conducive paint stuff too atm so this was really interesting to see.

Electroform your foot! Bring the kit to work, paint foot with conductive paint, spend the day with your foot in the plating bath under your desk. Shiny foot!

This was very cool and an interesting process. I'm excited to see what other things you do with it.
I love that you aren't afraid to try different things. I've heard a lot of TH-cam creators say they worry too much about screwing up or that their audience won't be interested but I think as long as you enjoy it, we will too. Especially as a maker, challenging yourself to try new techniques and mI could honestly watch you make anything, you'reediums is a really fun experience, sharing that can be inspiring to viewers. That's not me saying I don't also love watching you do more traditional woodworking, I enjoy it all!
You're entertaining, funny and I learn stuff sometimes, I could honestly watch you make anything!

I'm loving the new videos. For this one I'd love to see you do something where you Electroform only part of a piece you make. Maybe something like a multi-color resin ring and paint a spiral or stripe around it to get a copper bling. then brush on some clear resin to protect the copper.
