Wow, poor Zuko 💔 It's so unbelievably sad seeing what he had to go through. His past explains a lot. You can now find our reactions to the rest of season 2 over on our Pateron: www.patreon.com/ScribblesReactions
I think the suggestion about Zuko's mother is clear. Azulon said, "Iroh has had punishment enough, but yours has scarcely begun." This is followed by Azula saying that their father is going to kill Zuko. Zuko’s mother then tells him that everything she did was to protect him-these words sound very much like the final message of a mother who is about to "go away." In my opinion, the implication here is clear: Zuko's mother, loving and caring as she is, sacrificed herself for Zuko.
Also remember the flashback with the turtle-ducks: "Zuko, that's what moms are like. If you mess with their babies... HRUM! They're gonna bite you back" My god she did bite back...
This episode is one of the best in the entire series. It really gives a background for why Zuko tries so hard to find the Avatar, even it seemed like a lost cause in the series' beginning. Also shows how strong he actually is, but also how much he relies on his title as a prince to get the things he wants. But also learns that his title is not respected as he used to think. He was feared, but not respected.
This is why I love my fellow Avatarists like you. They always come up with such fresh perspectives and insightful angles that make me rewatch and rethink ATLA in entirely new ways. It’s incredible how much depth and meaning they uncover in my favorite series, making me appreciate it even more with every revisit!😊😊
Zuko is still one of the greatest characters of all time for me, even 15 years after I first watched this show.. And this episode of me of the best in the show
As to the writing getting darker I think the best way to explain it is that it was a kids show, and as the original audience got older (the kids who watched it) the writing grew with them. As the show aged, so did the audience and the writing.
Zuku is an incredibly rich character. The reasons all this stuff is impactful is due to season 1 and previous season 2 episodes. You care because of world and character building. Iroh was his fun jovial self before and during the war. But, he is his father's son, and hecis a general in the Fire Nation army. Despite his beliefs about the war he's loyal to father and country. But, this unjust war cost him his only son. His wife is already dead. He has nothing left. And, I'm sure he blames himself for not figuring out a way to keep his son off the front lines. As the crown prince Iroh certainly could've kept his son away from the battle. This is NOT like Game of Thrones. Game of Thrones is like this. There was foreshadowing in the beginning if the episode. Zuko hurt the turtle dove baby, and the mother attacked him. Azulon threatened Zuko by ordering Ozai to kill him. Azulon turns up dead, and the mother disappears into the night after telling Zuko she did everything for him. Frankly, I think Azulon ordered Zuko's death for two reasons. Azulon spoke of Ozai trying to steal the crown from Iroh after the death of his "beloved" son. I thin Azulon was truly grieving for Lu Ten. Remember, Lu Ten was Azulon's first grandchild and the next in line after Iroh. He was angry at Ozai and sad. Second. Azulon didn't have Ozai fighting at the war for a reason. Ozai is a sick, egotistical psychopath, and Azulon knows that. Azula is just as crazy, and Zuko is weak as a person and in bending. Having Ozai kill Zuko would absolutely wreck that family, and ensure Ozai and his offspring never rose to power.
10:06 Man i never realized she said that. Which makes it extra weird he died 🤔 15:06 zuko is younger 18:13 OMG why y'all cut that part? That was important info and i wanted to hear azulas voice with the sketchy music 😭
