    A little note on the FT-70, it can run entirely on external power using its internal charging port. While I do have two batteries for it, I am also building a USB battery bank adapter for it, which allows me throwing my 70Wh battery bank at it.

    I EDC a Wouzon KG-UVD1P with the battery eliminator cig. lighter cord in my work truck. The program memories will drop and the radio will default to factory if left unpowered for too long. Keep a standard battery on it when stored. I keep a backup of the program freqs. in KG-UV Commander, or you can use CHIRP.

    I wish I'd known about this channel when I first got my tech license. I went to my first and last club meeting. Never went back. I wasn't very welcomed. Sadly if you're not an older chubby guy they just don't include you in anything. I saw no reason to go back. Never found anyone to get advice from. I ended up practically giving up getting good at it. The guy in charge of the club now is an old instructor of mine who raked me over the coals for asking a question once in class. So now I definitely won't go to any of the meetings. He was only there for the check. He wouldn't help his students. He had 3 favorites and they were the only ones that got help.

    Going to admit - first radio was the Baofeng. Have a TH-D74, but the Baofeng goes in the get home bag due to the fact that the extended battery lasts forever, and it's rugged as hell!

    • @bruehlt

    HI, I enjoy your videos and subscribed and even bought T-shirt from your place. I have one experienced issue today. In my local net area, I hear from all members, but they can't hear me even though I am transmitting (as I see red light, when I am transmitting). So, I am puzzled why is that I can hear from all of them but no one could hear me, why?

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally radios can hear better than that can transmit. Try again standing outside and standing with open spaces between you and the repeater. Consider upgrading your antenna too. Or, you may not have the PL tone and offset programmed to activate your repeater

    Hey, I completely appreciate your everything - keep up the kickass stuff! Question; the ABREEEEE antenna... basically, like you said, sort of like those "slap bracelets" - just out of curiosity, d'ya suppose it might be more than possible to MacGyver something similar and compatible from a woodworker's tape measure? I'm very much into "Homebrew" radio *anything*, so I'm very interested in your input on this - any thoughts? Might the answer be as simple as I suspect? Thanks in advance, and keep up the awesome stuff you do! Thanks and greetings, from a lone, Nordic/Native-American Métis, from Nagoya, Japan! :)

    "This is D-Star country boyyyy" Thick country twang w/attitude. Old fudds are exactly why I quit messing w/ham 2 years ago and sold my gear. Getting a FT3DR solely for my get home bag and emergency stuff. Have no interest in listening to 80 year old dudes talk about their shacks and ole ladies all day. 3DR is definitely overkill for what I need but the color touchscreen sold me I hate learning a bunch of button combos and deep menu patterns and I make enough money to splurge on convenience.

  • @markr.1984
    @markr.1984 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've had an Advanced class ham license for almost 30 years but really never liked ham radio very much. I don't like to talk much, hey, not everyone is a conversationalist. And all the conversations about all the resistors and capacitors people change to improve this or that is totally boring to me, even though I've worked in electronics for a living for 40 years!!! And to listen to folks on HF SSB doing contact contests makes me scratch my head or laugh, depends on my mood. why do people get their jollies doing that? Seems like it's a pride/ego thing about how many contact people get. Maybe get a life or something? I'm an old man now but I have more of a life than that. Listening to a local repeater on 2M doing club checks ins for some weekly thing also doesn't interest me much. I don't even have a radio to talk on anymore. I'm thinking about getting a dual band HT just to have something for emergencies but that's about it. But for the longest time I've only renewed my license every ten years!! That's pretty much it!! And now they have so many different modes and digital stuff it makes my head spin, really it's just too much to digest. So ham is even less appealing to me now than it was 30 years ago. I do listen in on many frequencies on "receive-only" scanners and SW radios and the like, just to check out what's going on. And no, I'm not giving out my call sign.

Been carrying it ever since and do not wish for a second I had stuck to the G43.

    Question: What software are you using for all your video switching and pulling your chromakey? We use vMix for a weekly live webcast.
    Comment: I noticed your main camera is using auto-focus. You can tell because when you move quickly closer and back it loses focus and hunts to find it again. You may want to shift to manual and set the focus for the spot you are seated. 73 KJ7RDY

    I watched this one again last night, as I'm trying to decide which radio to EDC (Currently a Baofeng GT-5R, but considering at Wouxun KG-UV9P or Yaesu FT-65R) and you brought up a question that I've been wondering about a lot. Do you just load the VHF / UHF Simplex frequencies at the top of your radio, or do you break it out to include the entire group of simplex frequencies for your area? We don't have a ton of traffic on simplex, based on my monitoring around town, but I agree that it should be first on my channel list. Just not sure how far to take that. So, how do you implement that?

      Brian, the UV-5R or BaoFeng BF-F8HP are great to start with. They are dual-band, 144MHz and 440MHz. They share the same batteries and antenna and are programmed the same. The major difference is the the bf-F8HP transmits at up to 8 watts on Hi power. So for just receiving it is the same. I hope you plan on at least getting the Technician license as it's not as fun just to listen-- you want to get in on the action. Very informative and inclusive video. Thanks for posting. I've learned to carry my FT-3DR now along with my Glock 42, while I'm hiking and cycling. I'd love to find a quality BT ear piece. My PowerBeats Pro are great but they don't pair with my radio. You'd love that Glock 42 by the way; lightweight, accurate, easy to conceal, and powerful enough.

    Sure, I carry every day, not a radio. That is what the vehicle is for dual band and soon to be HF as well.

    Is there a setting on the baufeog to have your channel names and frequencies to scan at the same time? So I know what frequency I’m listening to. I’m new to ham. Thanks

      Yeah. Set the a channel to name and b channel to frequency. Then scan the a channel. When you stop, you can put the b channel on the same memory # and know the frequency.

    I already carry a knife and flashlight. My wife carries the cell phone. Don't know that I'd have much use for a HT. But if I drove out in the mountains, yeah, I'd carry one....
    As for handy talkies, Josh, I would _very much_ like to see you spearhead a drive to have the FCC designate two frequencies, one in UHF and one in VHF, as emergency frequencies. In cases where cell phones become dead. Then, with emergency frequencies, one with an inexpensive radios can easily communicate with helicopter and airplane pilots.
    These frequencies need not be dedicated, which is the beauty of it. Just designate the frequencies. Let people continue to use them if desired (the more ears on them the better), just designate them for emergency use. If they have to break every 15 minutes for 45 seconds, fine.
    But we need them, and you have considerable influence. It could save lives...nay, it _would_ save lives. Then carrying radios would make more sense.

      Often carrying a radio isn’t to help yourself, but to help others. For instance using the wilderness protocol.
      Regarding your request to define a shared frequency. I’m unsure of that is possible or not. It’s a good question.

    My shack is a two man motorcycle tent in the middle of an olive grove. My equipment is inside the tent. I sit outside and do my thing. I am looking forward to a more permanent structure in the near future.

    When I am driving, I typically make a call on .52 after every song. Between tracks, pause and make a call. I find it works well to remind me, but also spaces it out a bit so I'm not just spamming it
