    Great point about redundancy in kits. I have to plan for the potential loss of my TH-D74A and how it's now obsolete, so I have been drilling with other radios that I can get set up for TNC use and general purpose RF (analog and digital voice). Normally when I have something I really like I'll get a second one (a costly principle sometimes) and dedicate it to a pack, just so I don't have to always transfer things and potentially forget it for a field activity.

    After a year and a half of Zoom, how do people not know how to mute their audio? Definitely, some good ideas for go-bags. Beats the Gator boxes that require a truck to get them GOing.

    I've known QRP operators to setup their kit in old school metal tooboxes. If done properly it should make a good Faraday box also.

    For the G-90, I prefer the XGG comms Digimode 4 interface when compared to the CE-19. The one I have has both the data and CAT connections integrated into the unit, so there are only two cables that plug into the radio, and one to the computer. The CE-19 setup requires multiple cables, and in some cases, an external sound card, resulting in a much more complicated setup, and is harder to keep neat.

    34:20 In reference to the garbage pail faraday cages and the ease of transporting in your truck; in the event of an EMP your radio gear may be fine, but your truck may now be unusable unless you drive a 1970’s model with a distributor, points and condenser, and a mechanically operated fuel pump. 😉 Most, if not all, vehicles these days will fall victim to an EMP.

      Not sure I believe it but had an engineer tell me that all the shielding they have to do in modern electric vehicle (Tesla in his case) to prevent RF noise in the environment, makes them very tolerant to an EMP.

      @@HamRadioCrashCourse do you have a video on this topic? Im glad to hear my truck won’t be disabled. It’s something I’ve been worried about and saw on another channel where a guy is promoting essentially a faraday car cover to prevent EMP exposure.

    Great video .. I did have a question.. you were mentioning an On The Go adapter.. was that just a Micro USB to USB cable to connect the SDR dongle to Lenovo Tablet? Also Would you still use the mobilink still if say you used you use the FT5DR instead.. which has BT capability and APRS built in correct?

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No. The ft5 doesn’t really do what the Mobilinkd does. The ft5d cannot connect over tablets.

    With supplies threatened, and needing to build at least one of these kits (or an analog thereof), what would you recommend for someone starting from scratch? The first kit (of course, you'd have to substitute the Kenwood if you couldn't find one used), the 2nd, a mashup of the 3? Now, cheaper gear selection is a factor, as I'd need to setup a couple of these for family/friends for emergency comms.

      We are Slaves to the solar cycle. At the top of the cycle, your signal can go all the way around the world, and come back to you. But that is optimal conditions. Right now, while conditions are poor, you’re basically guaranteed country wide communications, but not always worldwide. This will improve as time goes on.
